What\'s your ball of choice?
I like to use a ProV1 (392) for the par 3 holes, but prefer Callaway War Birds for the longer holes.
Just curious what kind of balls you guys use, or is there one I should try? |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
you change ball based on par?
I think you should be able to find a ball that performs well on par 3, 4 and 5 holes. My guess is it is in your head, or is it because you need the extra distance from the warbird (which i think is a distance ball), on the par 5s. I use the old titleist professional 90s, and the pro v1, and most any other soft feel ball. I love spin, but finally retired the titleist tour balata after cutting the cover on three in one round |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
ProV1. LOL at changing.
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Save the balatas either for your own hickory play or to auction for guys who do play hickory. Small group, but I think it is growing a little. Guys with either old or repro clubs want the balatas. I heard about one guy making gutties, but those were very expensive and I don't know if they will keep them going. If you have new old stock balatas I would hold them.

Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Maxfli Noodle... I'm too cheap to play w/ProV1's...
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Used Titleist DT Solo's... I'm too cheap to play w/ProV1's...
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I like all of the top line balls. ProV1x is my choice though.
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Yes, I would play the ProV's everywhere, but if the hole has water, or it might get away from me I am cheap and go down to the Callaways or even a Nike ball.
This is good feedback so far, I have a ton of those old Balata balls, glad to know someone will want them someday! |

Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
The Pro V1 and Pro V1x are so much better than the other balls out there. It's very impressive how much of a lead Titleist has taken in that field. Despite what some people say, you really don't have to be that good to see a very noticeable difference. Whether it's worth paying whatever they sell for is, of course, another issue.

The Callway Black is also a good ball. |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I am a Pro V1x guy but if you are looking for a good cheap ball try the Top Flight D2 "feel" ball. People are really liking this thing for twelve bucks a dozen.
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
DT Solo is THE cheap ball. NXT Tour is next, then my pro v1x.

I didn't have one person say anything or ask any questions so I guess the word isn't out about them yet. Maybe top flite isn't promoting them. |

[/ QUOTE ] Callaway bought Top Flight for one reason ball patents. This is a damned good ball right up there with the top end Callaway balls IMO. I keep questioning why I just don't start using these things as a matter of fact I have a scramble today and I'm gonna pick up another dozen. I am a lifelong Titleist guy but jeeze 30 bucks is a pretty big savings. |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Whatever ball I happen to have found in the woods or received as a gift. Lately that means a lot of Noodles.
When I buy, i've been using Maxfli Revolutions (cheap) and the occasional sleeve of ProV1s. |

[/ QUOTE ] I've seen you're a good player and like the ProV1. Think these D2's are worth a shot for a guy like me? I play maybe 2x/month during the season and on a good day shoot mid 80's and a bad day shoot mid 90's. I like a ball with a little softer feel. High spin probably isn't what I'm looking for. Just don't like the "rock" feel of say low end TopFlites. D2 worth a shot? Thanks! |

This is not to say they're not good balls or that you shouldn't use them, just that I think there's a clear divide. of course, this is all personal opinion and I'm sure many disagree with me. |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I'm a ProV1x guy (2nd choice NXT).
I've played something that says "Titleist" for so long that it bothers me a little to see anything else. It would certainly bother me to see something that says "Top-Flite." But I've heard good things about a Bridgestone ball -- and I've started to see a few around the course. Anyone got an opinion on those? |

It doesn't easily scuff and spins like the proV1x Haven't used the B330s, so I can't comment on that |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I told this story in the OOT thread, but what the heck. When I was working at the sporting goods department at K-Mart in the mid nineties I used to love using the Maxfli MD 90s. They then changed to the tugsten cores and I couldn't control them like the old ones. So I took the last 20 boxes that we had in stock. I still have four boxes sitting in my closet.
I can put those balls anywhere I want. They go about 20 yards shorter than a new ball with my driver. However with aproach shots I can stop them easier than I can new balls. Every year I think about buying some new balls. Every year I cheap out. |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I vary between a prov1 and a callaway hx tour depending on conditions. The cally is my only choice in the wind.
|
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I also play mostly pro vs or the nxt tour. The nxt tour is a very good ball and when they are $25 or so they are a really good ball. I did play some of the bridgestones last year, until the pro shop at my club ran out. I think you would have to be an extremely good player to really notice much difference. Maybe one or the other you like more, but I doubt any difference would hurt or help your game probably. Good ball IMO, although I too tend to buy titleists.

Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
I use a Bridgestone from time to time, quality ball.

nike power distance power soft. the power distance in the green box. [/ QUOTE ] Is this the Nike that's similar to the ProV1? A pro friend of mine says that that ball sells like mad in the shop; good price. I play either the So/Lo or the ProV1. I probably wouldn't play the ProV1 if I had to buy them, but my dad literally has a bucket full of them in his cart shed. ALL the old guys at the country club buy them, and one of the holes has a canyon that's a ProV1 gold mine. |
Re: What\'s your ball of choice?
Top Flite XL-3000. Cheapest to replace when they go into the lake.

I tried the d2 feel today, they were alright.

And what's up with that Nike Juice ball? I have been finding quite a few of those lately.

And what's up with that Nike Juice ball? I have been finding quite a few of those lately. [/ QUOTE ] They're cheap. It's just a variation of the Pinnacle Long Drive ball. The Pinnacle has 330 dimples and the Juice has 312. Causes less spin. I've never played the Juice but I have played the Pinnacle Long Drive. The Long Drive is a great cheap ball ($15 for 15), but it's only of real use on full shots. I can get it to stop on the green on most full shots, but 1/2 - 3/4 shots the ball really releases and it's hard to hold the green. It's a good ball to start out with though because it has decent feel and it's cheap |

The Black is the "longer" ball and it's the one Tiger plays. I like it. Good feel, distance and spin. |
