Why do players do this? Slow roll in the Trop 4/8 game in AC....
Villain on the button. Hero on the big blind.
Hero re-raises villain pre-flop. Flop comes J-9-rag. Hero bets, villain calls. Turn is a 5, Hero bets, villain raises, hero calls. River is another 5. Hero bets, villain raises and says " I know your don't have a five". Villain then says "What do you got?" The hero says "you raised, what do you got?" Villain opens up a pair of fives for quads. Hero says "Cute, you know I don't have a five, I got aces, that's what I got." I thought there might have been more fireworks after that, but the hero took that in stride, considering the beat that was put on him and the way the villain was a real douche. What's wrong with people? This is only a lousy 4/8 game. |

Al,
The players at the Trop come from the bottom of the barrel. |
Re: Why do players do this? Slow roll in the Trop 4/8 game in AC....
You call that a slow roll? THIS would have been a slow roll (same action up to the rived call):
Villian holds cards like he plans to muck and says "nice call, you have an overpair right?". Hero flips over his cards, and villian says "too bad I have 2 pair, fives and fives! BOO-YAH - SHIP IT BAAAABEEEEE". As played, it was pretty lame for a slow roll. Semi-interesting bad beat story though. |

Al, The players at the Trop come from the bottom of the barrel. [/ QUOTE ] Mike, I am not looking to play with the poker elite. I was just trying to roll up hours to get the poker rate on a room on a Friday and Saturday night. However, this was totally uncalled for and ruined what could have been a nice relaxing low limit game. I figured the dealer would have straightened the villain out in no uncertain terms. The dealer left it up to hero who is a good, experienced player to fend for himself; so he quickly told the villain he wasn't showing his cards until the villain revealed his hand. It could have been worse if the hero was a relatively inexperienced player, like many of the weekend players are at the Trop. |

Early in a $200 B&M Tournament yesterday. I raise a limper with A-A, flop comes Ts-6s-2c. Limper donks and I shove for a slight overbet. He tanks for a full 60 seconds muttering, "I got you beat, but I don't know if I want to risk it against a flush draw." He eventually calls and rolls 6-6. The thing is, he wasn't slowrolling me, he was actually considering folding.

Re: Why do players do this? Slow roll in the Trop 4/8 game in AC....
The whole idea of a slow-roll is to briefly make the other guy think they have won the pot before squashing their excitement by showing down a better hand that claims the pot. That is not what you described.
If he really wanted to slow roll you, he would have waited for you to table your aces and then when you started to get happy about the win, he'd have rolled his pocket 5's. Slow Rollers aren't happy with just winning the pot, they want to get under a player's skin in the process. |

It has the same effect as a slowroll (you convince yourself that you've won, because no one with a better hand could take this long to decide), but then the weak-tight idiot finally just calls with his middle boat or whatever. If it was a slow-roll, at least you could feel justified in letting him have it - with the weak-tight idiot, you have to just smile and nod. |

Statements like "I know you don't have a five" are slow-rollers favorite because he's giving you some sort of hope (while knowing full well that he crushes you). |

totally uncalled for and ruined what could have been a nice relaxing low limit game. [/ QUOTE ] If mild posturing with quads ruins your experience, I'm not sure you'd be able to find a "relaxing" low-limit game anywhere. You shouldn't give other people so much control over your emotions. [ QUOTE ] I figured the dealer would have straightened the villain out in no uncertain terms [/ QUOTE ] By doing what? "Sir, you have to show first. If you hesitate again, I'll have to waggle my finger at you." Seriously, what did you imagine the dealer doing in this situation? As to people getting upset over more legitimate slow-rolls... eh, who cares? Isn't this the poker equivalent of the chest-point nose-flick? The person doing it looks like an immature goof, and the more grace the person being rolled has, the better s/he looks. Getting worked up lets the terrorists win. |

Villain made quads and was excited to showdown. He wanted the hero to showdown first, wanted to know what hero had because he "knew he didn't have a five." A bad beat, yes; painful, yes...but not a slow-roll. |

He knew what he was doing too. Pretty lame. |

If Trop players are the bottom of the barrel, where do Taj players come from? Under the barrel? Personally, I've been splitting time between the Trop and Borg lately, and I don't see a big difference in the etiquette of players at either place.

Looks like he saved you a bet on the end.(didn't see any mention of the raise being called)
They do it because they want attention drawn to themselves. People do this at all limits. The size of the limit doesn't make it any better than the other. b |

Bernie,
OP watched the hand happen,he did not have the Aces. I interpret Al's post as his way of expressing his disdain for a certain element of the poker community. Al has a Harvard education, I think he has a hard time dealing with the dregs of society. Al correct me I misinterpreted the post. |

Looking back it does seem to be a spectator view. Yep, those dregs can wear on you. However, this was pretty tame. This really wasn't that bad a beat either. b |

[/ QUOTE ] Mike, you have it exactly right. Your dad and your uncle (the late Joseph and Albert (Kid Blast)) would be proud of your perceptiveness. They also would have expressed their anger in no uncertain terms had they had the aces. If they had the fives they may had have done the same thing the villain did and laughed their asses off. Nobody from the game would have dared say anything. Check wikipedia. |
