This came to mind for me. She doesn't perform her songs (I don't think) and yet she has a ton of hits.

Re: Best Female Songrwiter (of all time)?

I'm not really too conscious of female songwriters that I really like. Which is a bit odd, because I generally love female vocalists.

Joni Mitchell usually shows up near the top of this list. Carly Simon certainly deserves to be on the list somewhere.

Must be the correct answer. Only other one I can think of is Cynthia Weill.

Actually I can't believe how few of my favorite albums are by female artists.

I kind of like some stuff by Pj Harvey. Same goes for Cat Power/Chan Marshall. I hate Björk. Madonna is ok at times. So is Joni Mitchell. Tracy Chapman's debut was great but that was it for her.
Gillian Welch is someone who is definitely a personal favorite of mine.
Joanna Newsom who so many adore at the moment, should be shot.

I would say it's definitely Carole King.

Some other good ones not mentionen: Dolly Parton -oops mentioned-, Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, Sinead O'connor, Nina Simone, Krissy Hyndes.

Fiona Apple

[/ QUOTE ]

absolutely correct, incredibly original, unique song writer.
bottom line she is a poet and what sets her apart are her arrangements (with help from people like Jon Brion), not like any typical pop chick songs, plus her phrasing and rhyming style of her words are not like the typical pop female vocalist.
basically what sets her apart: originality and passion

joni mitchell, second

LOL, wow, I didn't notice that one. Different opinions are part of what make the world such an interesting place, but Joni Mitchell second to Fiona Apple... lol. Joni Mitchell's music is incredible. I'll put Coyote (especially the Last Waltz version) up against anything Fiona Apple (or any other songwriter for that matter) ever wrote.

If any woman can give Carole King a run for the money, it's Joni Mitchell. I'm sorry, but I just can't see Fiona Apple as even being in the same league as two songwriters like Carole King and Joni Mitchell.

Tracy Chapman's first album is pretty incredible ... Exile in Guyville from Liz Phair is also really, really good, but most people wouldn't know that from the stuff she puts out now

Carole King is the right answer, definitely. She wrote "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," fer chrissakes. I'd put Chrissie Hynde and Christine McVie up there, too.

Re: Best Female Songrwiter (of all time)?

I'm not much of a Joni Mitchell fan.

I thought Fiona's first album, Tidal, was really amazing.

Always been a fan of Carole King and that's who I initially thought of when I saw the thread.

Agree that Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville is good but this one's probably not all the way up there with the greats.

One mostly unknown one that I like better than Exile in Guyville:
Was really impressed with the mid or late 90's Patti Rothberg album 'Between the 1 and the 9'. Great flow to the album and great songs throughout.

Some of the good ones are the ones where you just KNOW they were going through some lousy heartache at the time they wrote it.

Re: Best Female Songrwiter (of all time)?

Yeah, personal bias for me.
Objectively I'd put Joni Mitchell first.
