Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
It looks like we are going to be switching to v-bulletin. For now, we're going to archive everything prior to January 1 2007.
That should take care of performance issues until the move. When we do move, we will only be transferring three months to the new forums. Previous posts will be archived on ubb. Because archiving will require some downtime, it will begin early Sunday. |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
If it'll put a stop to these slowdowns, I'm very much looking forward to it.
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
^^yea, this is getting really annoying to have to wait like a min to load every other page...
so when the forums are upgraded, only the last 3 months of posts at that time will be transferred?? so are u indicating our favorites links should be backed up?? |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Are you going to archive posts that had the OP prior to 1/1/07, or are you going to archive posts that have the most recent response before 1/1/07?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Why not just do it ASAP (read: now) and get it out of the way?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
We'll archive threads with no activity since 1/1/07. If, all of a sudden in response to this announcement a lot of threads become active again we may have to archive even more threads. I want to get the database down to about half it's current size or smaller and if it takes more then I'll do more.
When we eventually move to new software we will only take about 3 months of threads with us (as Mat said). We will not take PM's. We will not take favorite threads. However, the old forums will remain in read-only mode and your PM's and favorites will still exist. |

Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Mat & Chuck,
Thanks for the update. |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
so we won't be able to ninja bump threads from '05?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
I'm curious as to how limiting the number of threads effects the speed of the forum. Are the slowdowns due to people searching too far back or something?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Mike Haven asked me about a PM Archiver. I will redouble efforts on this and consider making it very much quick and dirty so that at least people can have a rapid way of grabbing this information.
Mat, Chuck, how much time do we have before vBulletin? |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Does this mean my PM box won't be full as of Sunday?

Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
vbulletin is great software, I think it'll be a very positive change.
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
My login name and my display name are different. When we move to vbulletin, which one will I use?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Hopefully you guys have someone on board who knows how to install some vBulletin hacks.
There's some really neat ones out there such as Thank You Hack Lots more at http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=194 |

Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Why not just take the high volume non poker forums like BBV, OOT, BBV4f****'rs, El Diablow's forum, etc and make them talk on IRC chat rooms? That would clear up a lot of bandwidth and save 2+2 for serious poker talk.
For a being a bunch of smart people, I'm surprised that the ppl that run 2+2 don't just do the simple, obvious solutions. |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Good idea! Also, maybe the ads are the problem. Try taking them down for a couple weeks to see if that helps.

All those people on the aforementioned forums don't even play poker, they just chat all day on 2+2. So I guess shhhhhhhh!!!!! Don't let the rakeback advertisers know. 2+2 should sell specific ads for rakeback on Zit Cream and Weight loss diet plans for those forums. |

Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
Mat, just out of curiosity...do you guys optimize/analyze the database at all, or do you just archive older posts to another server every so often?
|
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
i don't know.

Mat, just out of curiosity...do you guys optimize/analyze the database at all, or do you just archive older posts to another server every so often? [/ QUOTE ] We do both (and prefer not to archive). The problem is, that as we have gotten over 6 million posts in the main forums it gets harder and harder to keep up. However a hardware change and database optimization on Wednesday night seems to have dealt with the immediate problem and alleviated the need for a major archive at this time. We will, however, only be taking about three months worth of active threads over to vbulletin when we make the transition. These forums will then become a defacto archive. Chuck |

Yes, whatever you guys did a couple nights ago definitely made a big difference.

Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
So... for real, though... we're losing all our PMs?

So... for real, though... we're losing all our PMs? [/ QUOTE ] I just downloaded a Firefox extension called scrapbook. It lets you save webpages nicely. If you tell it to "save file as", you can tell it the link depth that you want to save. So, set that to 1 and it'll follow one level of links. When it starts up, it'll show you a list of all of the links it's going to save. You might just want to save the relevant ones. In any case, make sure you don't tell it to archive the "logout" link, like I did the first time. It seems to be working for me .. |

PM Archive utility available
As mentioned earlier in the thread, Mike Haven asked me to put together a utility to archive PMs.
I call it KeePM and you can download it here. It is a Windows utility that requires the .NET framework, but if you have XP you probably have that already. If not you can get it at the Microsoft download center. The download KeePM_setup.exe is an installer. The program is KeePM.exe and will be installed in the program group "SG Poker Utils." Please take a look and let me know what you think. |

Should not be the size of the mailbox, especially since it sounds like the index is the right size. I wonder if the body of the message is somehow the problem. PM sent. |
Re: Archiving will take place on Sunday to address the slowness
It just occured to me that an admin can ninja bump this thread on any given Sunday that they decide to archive.
