OOT expose your prejudice
You are talking to a friend of a friend. About 20 minutes into the conversation he brings up a fact about himself. All else being equal would you think more or less of him if he said...
(this is anonymous so be honest even if you think it won't be popular or PC) |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I've got something to "expose" to you, but it ain't on the list...

Re: OOT expose your prejudice
i think it's funny that more people think less of those that use heroin than coke. people on coke are way more obnoxious than people on heroin.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
Its weird that a devout Muslim wouldn't really change my opinion, but I'd think less of a devout Christian. I wonder if that's because I'm exposed to more crazy Christians, there's something that takes more dedication to be devoutly Muslim and that balances it out, or what.

Re: OOT expose your prejudice
change voted republican to voted for george bush and its the only one on that list I wouldn't have voted "same" on.

[/ QUOTE ] People on coke are more annoying, yes, but they usually have jobs and stuff. Heroin users pretty quickly become the most pathetic piles of crap imaginable. |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I don't understand why you would think more of someone if you found out they were gay or married someone from another race. Is it just like an "oh, he must be really brave!" type thing?

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah - that doesn't make sense. Or the heroin thing. "Oh! You've injected a potentially lethal substance into your veins by your own accord? You're my new hero!" (Note: I voted 'same' on that one) |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I tend to think less of almost anyone who's used "hard" drugs.
To me it depends on whether or not you're a regular abuser or have tried them once to experiment. |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
Lol. Seriously guys, when I read this it really makes me both sad and amazed that I frequent this forum. You know, having a high IQ is not all there is to intelligence. Of course I also realize many people here are younger and in a differnet time of their life than me, but some of these results are nuts.
How everyone here answers in 30-40 years would be very interesting. |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
20 minutes in, and I've already got my opinion of them pretty much, and none of these things is going to change it.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
voted 'same' to everything except the 3 drug questions ('less').
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I didnt answer any of the questions, if you gave me motivations behind each, than I will judge, but otherwise, I can make a case for most of that stuff up there and have me thinking less/more/same depending on why they are doing it.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
Everything I've ever heard about heroin makes it seem like trying it is just a really bad, stupid idea, so I think less of people for that. Nothing I can't get over pretty quickly; my opinion of you would probably suffer more if, upon first meet, you ask me if I've been saved by the love of Jesus.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I wouldn't think less of a person over any of these issues.
However, on about half of these, I would definitely avoid this person after that. |

Re: OOT expose your prejudice
This poll just proves to me that most of you are very out of touch with normal society, and have some really f'ed up values.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
i voted same except for cigarettes and heroine, but somehow not cocaine!
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
also, some of these are really funny
some people would think more of someone if they were gay? or if they voted democrat? some would think less of someone if they voted republican? really?? sadness.. another dumb one, more people (more than half!) would think less of someone if they were christian, but less people would think less of someone if they were muslim. pure hilarity there. just more proof that in today's society it's basically not ok to make fun of a person unless they are a straight, white, or christian |

This and that more people would think less of someone for being in the army then for smoking pot....wtf? |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I went less for smoking, heroin, muslim, christian, republican and army. More for atheist. Same for others.
Thought for a bit about coke (I said same considered less) and atheist. For atheist I said more but it could be more less or the same depending on how it was brought up. If it was some sort of reasonable discussion of the existence of a god then I would go more. If he was obnoxious about it I would go less. If he was in the hasn't thought much about it but believes no god exists I would go same. |
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
I voted same for all but 2.
Atheist - I think you should keep it to yourself. If we had only been talking 20 minutes I would think less of them if they brought it up out of the blue. I am agnostic but I think maybe 3 people I know in real life know that. And they asked about it. For some reason I don't mind if people believe in something and want to tell me about it. It seems more positive. Saying I believe if I carry these pretty rocks around with me makes my life easy would not make me think less of a person. It is a positive statement. Crazy but positive. Saying God does no exist seems negative. Like if every kid you meet you told them Santa is not real, same motivation imo. OOT as a home page - I have OOT as my home page but I voted I would think less of the person. And I would not admit to them that I read it. lol Edit : Just to be clear I do believe in santa I'm just saying some people don't and they should keep it to them selves. k |

some would think less of someone if they voted republican? really?? sadness.. [/ QUOTE ] Depends on the person. I was assuming someone about my age (late 20s). I know some people who are well off and vote for republicans because it's financially better for them. That I have no problem with. I think for someone who is in their 20s voting for Bush in the last election is a fairly bad signal without more info. This is especially true given the way a lot of the campaign went. If you're considering the midterm elections, I'm in Pennsylvania and cannot imagine myself being friends at all with anybody who voted for Santorum. |

Re: OOT expose your prejudice
a couple points jared,
first of all you're bringing in specific elections now which you should realize is complete horse [censored]. the question was "voted republican". also you mention that you would have no problem with someone voting for their own interest, but not for a person who voted on what they believe in? seems backwards to me it's just so sick that people tend to think what they believe in is superior, they don't see that democrats/republicans, it's all the same [censored] it's just different ideas. there's no evil party or good party. i dunno.. like i said, sadness |

Its always this side won, that side lost. Its not just ideas or about whats good for the people, its about the democrats beating the republicans, or vice versa. So since the media just pounds that down our throats 24/7 (complete with as many stupid stats an analysts as an NBA playoff series) its not that shocking that people view it as good/evil and choose one side to pledge their undying allegiance for and hate all opposition to their "team". |

a couple points jared, first of all you're bringing in specific elections now which you should realize is complete horse [censored]. the question was "voted republican". [/ QUOTE ] I think you're being overly harsh saying horse [censored] but I see your point. Since I'm 27, voted republican in a presidential race for someone my age would mean voting for George Bush so that's part of my issue perhaps. [ QUOTE ] also you mention that you would have no problem with someone voting for their own interest, but not for a person who voted on what they believe in? seems backwards to me [/ QUOTE ] I think voting for your own interest is fine and doesn't indicate much. Voting for what you believe in is fine too. The reason I would say less in this case is that people that have the beliefs that cause them to vote for republicans are usually people I wouldn't have as friends. This isn't always the case but often is. If someone told me that they voted republican because they're a libertarian and the republican party is the closest of the big two to their beliefs I would be fine with that. If they vote republican because they think the republican candidate is a better christian than the other candidate then I would think less of them. I think statistically I am more likely to encounter a random republican who is a republican for reasons such as the latter. [ QUOTE ] it's just so sick that people tend to think what they believe in is superior, they don't see that democrats/republicans, it's all the same [censored] it's just different ideas. there's no evil party or good party. i dunno.. like i said, sadness [/ QUOTE ] I agree with this. I actually somewhat think both parties are bad. I do think the Republicans are a bit worse now in general because they've had power for a while but that will probably shift back the other way. I do tend to agree with the democratic party on issues, but certainly don't across the board nor do I always disagree with the republicans. |

Re: OOT expose your prejudice
again jared you're just assuming that since someone has voted republican that they voted for bush. some people actually vote on the issues and don't blindly follow their favorite team. also rundownhouse you're basically doing the same thing by saying that mormons annoy you and trying to project it onto all christians somehow.
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
according to wiki mormons are christians
|
Re: OOT expose your prejudice
i feel like somehow christians have given republican politics a bad name, to the point where people equate being a republican with being a christian wackjob. i know a lot of people who would consider themselves republican, and none of them are even close to being religious. maybe because i live in the northeast??

Re: OOT expose your prejudice

just more proof that in today's society it's basically not ok to make fun of a person unless they are a straight, white, or christian [/ QUOTE ] While blind prejudice against straight, white, christians is of course really no better than any other bias, I think you have to account for the fact that those characteristics essentially describe "The Man." Straight, white, Christian men rule the country and much of the world, so it's not unreasonable for there to be some sort of backlash against them for many of the things that are wrong, fair or not. |
