Blake? Please explain the appeal..

He can't sing. He can't dance. He butchers better versions of the songs he is re-arranging. He is not that good looking. What is the appeal here? Is it simply because the well of guys is so shallow this year? He wouldn't have made it past the top 10 last season..

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Well, much like Melinda (imo) he benefits greatly from a very weak field.

Outside of this, I think Blake's appeal lies largely in the fact that he's "just good enough" in alot of critical categories (based on how he's packaged), and this translates to a strong overall appeal.

He's the non-threatening "indie / hipster" kid for mainstream America. He's got the forearm tattoos, but has a generally wholesome look. He takes classics and puts his "unique spin" on them, but nothing too experimental or overboard. His voice is not that great but generally a pleasant tone. He's not the best dancer / stage act, but he seems in control and is at least on-the-beat unlike Sligh. He beatboxes...

You throw this all at America and it's a likeable contestant with a defined, easily understood hook.

Also, LBK, I am assuming you are not a teenage/young adult female. I think much of his appeal rests with that demographic.

That is very similar to what people were saying about taylor last year in the tradesports chat. Taylors domination of the 30+ yr olds carried him to the end, Blake dominates the under 20 yr olds, and will probably pick up a lot of Sanjaya's preteen votes.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

I really liked Blake early on, but his appeal seriously faded once I saw he'd reached his peak and wasn't going to do any mindblowing performances - he simply isn't a good enough singer. That Cure song he did was terrible - a dreary performance of a dreary song (and I speak as a one-time Cure fan who loved that song as a 15 year old, lol). What a weak field this year - Elliot and Taylor were in a different league.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Blake is a much much better dancer than Taylor ever was.

Well I am on the other side of the spectrum. I loved Lennon and I love that song but I hate Blake for butchering it.

my point was just that .. in ,middle america...where a LOT of the votes come...are mainly not Lennon fans...i think the contestents should take the average voter and think..what would they vote for...i think phil has done this and by picking country songs will extend his AI stay longer than his talent should have taken him...and with a name like TheVegan i am sure you love lennon lol peace to the world and kumbaya ..out

The idea that anyone, let alone a slew of voters, who would normally support Blake now wouldn't because of the politics of that song is quite laughable.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

My thoughts exactly. You're (the guy talking about the politics) giving the general American public too much credit.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

I'm not much of a voter, and I don't really care to argue the merits of my views...but just to give one example, my slightly positive view on Blake went slightly negative last night, and the politics of his song choice do play a part in that.

Or it could be that you're giving them too much credit in assuming that a guy singing "Imagine there's no country...no religion too" isn't going to piss some people off.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Eh, whatever. I don't think it's affecting his votes by any significant amount. If there's any reason he doesn't get a lot of votes this week, it's because of his vocals.

I personally hate Blake now for singing that communist ditty.

i dont think a lot of people realize ho polarizing that song was/is esp when it came out.... i absolutely think it will play a part in the voting publics eyes...he also butchered the h*** out of it...lol

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

What is it with u unintelligent idiots talking about "imagaine" as some outlandish, crazy, radical song??? Here are the lyrics for reference:
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

I guess I shouldnt expect any more from the American Idol forum but still... you douchebags.

zasterguava, I just chose to ignore all the Comi comments but thank you for posting the lyrics and everyone should take to heart that brilliant WKRP episode. And in case some people didn't notice the title is what the song is suggesting, that you imagine......

Now that I see them, the lyrics actually do look like a commie atheist wrote them.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Honestly, what is the appeal for any of the people left. They are either fat, have no neck, goofy looking or average singers. There is no kelly clarkson or carrie underwood or Daughtry this year.

Does anyone think that if Doolittle wins that people will buy her albums? Do you know how many ugly women have great voices but since they aren't marketable they don't sell records.

Wow , thats great. Not only did Castro save Cuban healthcare he also made a Lennon statue!

However, thats pretty horrible evidence if you are insinuating that, that makes lennon a commie...

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Lennon was a hippie who had a lot of money. He was very idealistic obviously. Perfect world type crap. Only one problem: We don't, and will never live in a perfect world. He came across as slightly delusional to folks who didn't share his views.

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Havent' read the whole thread. But I'll stick up for him...

He doesn't have the greatest range but he's got a really nice quality to his voice. I'm a dude in my thirties and his singing is reminiscint of 80s music which will always have a softspot to me since that was my formative years.

Furthermore... I like what he does. he's not the best singer but he's the best all-around performer. He's creative, he takes chances and he's got some movement.

A lot of fun artists aren't the best singers. I happen to think he picks good songs (311 and the Cure... that speaks to me), pleasant tonal quality...

Back in the late 70's and early 80's there was a rock movement called "New Wave" and many of the leading male New Wave singers had singing styles quite similar to Blake.

Now the cable music channel that plays New Wave calls itself "Retro-Active" .

In many ways Blake is so old he's new. His voice and his style of music would have fit in just fine on the Top 40 charts of 25 years ago.

TheVegan 05-06-2007 03:24 PM

Re: Blake? Please explain the appeal..

Blake may be marketable but his voice is just so marginal.
