maybe not 'top' 5 however you would define that, but my favourites are Canibus, Eminem, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, and Royce da 5'9". Honorable mentions go to Elzhi, Phonte, Vast Aire, Slug (FU Lil Wayne fans he is the definition of mediocre), Ghostface and a bunch of others I forget

I remember a while back some show came on VH1 and it listed the "Top" MCs of All time. I wrote the list down just for a time like this:
In decending order- 22-Chuck D 21-Method Man 20-Queen Latifah 19-LL Cool J 18-Foxy Brown 17-Common 16-Snoop Dogg 15-KRS One 14-Run-DMC 13-DMX 12-Nelly 11-Big Pun 10-Missy Elliot 9-Beastie Boys 8-Lil' Kim 7-Dr. Dre 6-Rakim 5-Jay-Z 4-Nas 3-Eminem 2-Notorious B.I.G. 1-2Pac Obv. they heavily weighted mass appeal and success for some of the folks in the middle. I guess I agree w/ the top few, but one could make a case to switch in and out any of them. Toss this around |

Jay Z should be in top 3 of all lists of top 5 MC's and there is no way to legitimately argue against that. Ghostface Killah could should also be mentioned alot more then he is in this thread as should Rakim. As far as more current artists go, I am not so up to date on the times but I have a friend who is a real "wigger" so he is always playing what is "hot" currently, I guess according to the Source or something. So I know I have heard Joe Budden and he is real good as is Pappous ( I think that is how you spell it).

If we're talking about top 5 MCs and giving serious consideration to mass appeal, staying power, and influence, most top 5 lists need to include Biggie, Pac, and Jay Z. The last two can vary widely.
People listing Andre 3000 who do not even know who Big Boi is, haven't heard the track Player's Ball or of the album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik should not be taken seriously. To the folks who put Kool Keith, I would ask what are your reasons, and have you heard Nogatco Rd? Dr Octagon? Are you a huge pot head? |
