over time, at a full table, i don't think barry g, todd b, and ivy could be beat by the online short table "superstars" like brian t and patrick a.

At a full table filled with who? 5 abas vs. 5 iveys? This seems like a pretty terrible way to determine who is better.

I think they should take these people and run a NL "tournament" Everyone starts with 500k(their own) and over the course of a fixed time limit(like hundreds of hours) they all play NL. Heads-up, live, online, 6max, a mix. You can take any breaks you want, you can quit, if you run out of cash you can put more in. Like real life you can't take anything off the table that you have put in or won. After a set # of hours at a set number of table configurations whoever has the most wins. Or, if everyone but one throws in the towel, that one is declared the winner. Sort of like the deal that banker guy, you know the one with the million dollar bankroll, had with the Corporation except everyone is on their own. That's my idea and I'm sticking to it.

Have we really seen Antonius in NL cash enough to know where exactly he stands? Def. top 5 in the world, but I'm pretty sure Brian is up lifetime vs Patrick, but just like Antonius' online results at least this year, sample size is pretty small.

I heard Chip Reese is pretty damn good. I know nothing of him and would say sbrugby/luigi, but chip reese was considered to be the best cash game player in the world for quite awhile.

Chip Reese I'm sure is exceptional as an all around player, but he's definitely not one of the top no limit holdem cash players.

Listen I love Ivey and I'm not even saying he isn't the best, but how is it "not close." Have you seen the varied responses in this thread? I mean, I don't think your ever going to have a real answer because their just isn't a huge amount of difference in some of the top players. Oh wow, Ivey is up this month versus PA he's better. Or oh look, PA is up against Durr for February, but down against Aba. Impossible to determine who the best is really without a doubt.

So when you have a confusing question like this you have to boil it down to all the best players at a table who would win? Obviously Patrick Antonius sans shirt would throw everyone else so far off their game it wouldn't even be close.

One of the key themes running throughout this conversation is the idea of having a long-term view. While guys like Patrik and Townsend are currently on top of the pile, we know next to nothing about long term bankroll management, longevity (not burning out), discipline, etc.

It's tough to not be cliche when you mention these names--but guys like Doyle, Barry, and Chip have been doing this forever. I have to think that their longevity tips the scales in their direction (with Ivey being the next one in the list because he has been there for just a bit longer than the newest "batch").

No-limit players can come and go rather quickly. In actuality, this does not have as much to do with sample size as it does being one of the mentally toughest professions in the world.
