Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Yesterday while hung over I decided to order a movie on demand to kill an hour or two of misery. I decided to watch "The Marine" which is a movie starring former WWE Champion John Cena. I ended up extremely surprised: the movie had hilarious dialogue between the extremely self-conscious and quirky bad guys and the actual action was secondary to the showcasing of these characters' idiosyncracies. Anyway, when my roommate and I tried telling people that it was a good movie absolutely nobody believed us. I get a similar response from most people when I tell them that Under Siege II is one of my favorite movies.
Do any of you have similar experiences with movies that you think are great but that people refuse to take seriously? Just curious if there are any other hidden gems out there. Oh, and I'm not talking about movies that most people have seen that you like but nobody else does (like, if you're reading this post and thinking "Yeah, I loved Godfather III but everybody else hates it!" then you're not really getting it). Just movies that get summarily dismissed as complete crap that you think people would like. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Rue Barbare!
It's so bad-as good that I still don't understand that it's hasn't become a cult-classic. It has the quality of El Mariachi, and When the Raven flies. |

I was just making fun of you because you liked under seige II. I figured most people have seen that tho. I mean katherine heigl was in it! |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
I like the movie ISpy with eddie murphy and owen wilson. I am not saying it is good, just that I like it. I feel like that is the equivalent of saying I own more than one Alanis Morisette CD.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
The marine was so bad i could not finish it. I have no movies to add for your thread but congrats on picking two movies no one else will like.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Actually, I haven't seen The Godfather III due to its crap reputation.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
"Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man" is one of the best movies ever made.

FF, I might be wrong about this, but based on a very small personal sample it seems very few people have seen 61*. I think because it was an HBO movie originally it has a bad stigma, but it's actually very good. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
There was an OOT thread today where people ended up debating Goodfellas vs. The Big Lebowski. KKF said that Goodfellas was his favorite movie of all time, and someone responded sarcastically saying "oh then you must not have seen Final Destination 3." Hahaha.
Well that's my answer to this thread. FD3 is the type of movie people would joke about, since they assume it sucks, but I really doubt that anyone who jokes about it has actually seen it. Not only is it the best film of the franchise, it's one of the most effective and subtextually rich mainstream horror films of this decade. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Evan,
I have not seen 61* but I don't know anyone who pre-judges it as bad due to its HBO origins. Every review I have ever read of it said it was really good. Besides, Sopranos, Deadwood, the Wire, etc. are all from HBO - not much of a stigma there I'd say. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
i dont know if you can classify this as a movie, but R Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" DVD. whenever i bust it out to play for people and illustrate its genius, they just look at me all funny-like

I think it was Shant who previously hailed this DVD's genius. Maybe I need to see it after all this praise... |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
"For the Love of the Game." is one of my top 25 of alltime.
I recognize that it is not a great movie but I am a sucker for a baseball movie even when they are just thinly veiled chick flicks. Of all the chick flicks I have seen I think that For the Love of the Game has the most rewatchability. I agree with Evan that "61*" was really well done and it is a great movie (one of my top 15 of alltime) The Who's "Tommy" rock opera is also one of my top 3 movies of all time. While it recieved critical acclaim in its day the movie is now considered to be just some crazy drug movie when in actuality it is a sophisticated critique on religion and idolitry in modern society. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
I think The Descent was the best movie of last year, although it may not qualify b/c it actually got very good reviews (even though people still don't take it seriously). Similarly, Babe is one of my favorite movies of all time, even though a lot of people refuse to watch a talking pig picture. As for movies that were critically panned, I really liked The New Guy -- DJ Qualls's very existence cracks me up. Oh, and Halloween 4.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
The Hunted - Its nice to get away from all the CGI sometimes.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Starship Troopers

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Punch Drunk Love...noone likes Adam Sandler semi-serious. I thought the part where he's talking about the cute little kid was actually pretty funny. Also, Scotland, PA. I heard it was a reworking of Macbeth. Clever movie, but my friends thought it was a bit dry.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
The Rundown is probably my biggest guilty pleasure movie of the past few years.

Harsh Times w/ Christian Bale... So bad that it is funny.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
i watched the marine once on HBO OD, it is just terrible and i am not your friend anymore because of this post.

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Pretty much any Steven Seagal or Jean Claude Van Damme movie (just caught Under Siege 2 again last night).

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
reign of fire.
most people dont want to see it because dragons movies are kinda gay. and so is mathew mcconaughey. and so are puns. but it is f-ing sweet and not the least bit gay. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
61* is the bomb. I probably watched it like 6 times in a month when it was being shown on HBO years ago. And I hate the Yankees and find Billy Crystal annoying. With that said, it is so good that you can't help but enjoy it.
Barry Pepper and Billy Jane (or whatever his name is) did really great jobs. It's all about character development...something lacking from most modern movies. |

Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Revenge. Love that flick. Also while I'm thinking about it, I even liked The Postman. I think Kevin Costner gets way more [censored] than he deserves.

Starship Troopers [/ QUOTE ] If this question was about directors, Verhoeven would get my vote. I think he has a very original aesthetic and should get a lot more credit for that than he does. The casting in Starship Troopers was excellent. He really goes the extra distance to use the looks of the actors to enforce the archetypes. KJS |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
this isn't really relevant as i'm pretty sure everyone thinks this movie kicks ass, but i had nowhere else to post it:
i watched to live and die in la last night for the first time in years and it rules. |
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
Most of my friends hated Mars Attacks and Mystery Men but those types of comedies just crack me up. I also don't know many people who enjoyed From Hell and Open Range like i did.
|
Re: Movies You Like Nobody Believes Are Good
This is too current and a really lame choice, but anyone who hasn't seen Rocky Balboa yet is obviously dismissing it out-of-hand when it's easily the second-best in the series.

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah this movie is awesome. I've got two that I can think of: BaseKetball and The Good Shepherd. BaseKetball is easily in my top 7 favorite comedies and is ridiculously quotable. The Good Shepherd got crappy reviews and gets huge amounts of hate, but I find it to be well made, well acted and exquisitely tragic. It is on par with The Remains of the Day in my opinion, which is also about a great personal tragedy occurring side by side with a great historical one. |

However, I think there's a big difference between a movie and a TV show. A made-for-TV TV show is, well, normal. A made-for-TV movie is a whole different entity and I think most people look down upon it. |
