Blink, the Power of Thinking without thinking

I read a bumped thread and a lot of people had recommended this book to a lot of people, and I was wondering what this book is all about? I dont play online at all, only live, and I was hoping that this book wasn't just to speed up your reaction times basiclly letting you make quicker deicsions when youre 12 tabling. Anyone else have other things to say about the book?

I read it, great book. Another quality book by the same author is The Tipping Point.

Both are great reads, I enjoyed Blink more.

im actually reading tipping point right now, halfway through or so.. i ordered blink. im not as impressed as i thought i would be with what everyone has said about it, but its still not a bad read. also, 2+2 needs a literature forum. that is all.

I think you will enjoy Blink alot more. The Tipping Point was average compared to Blink imo.

I think Blink was okay.

Lots of the things I learned were cool. Few seem useful.

It could also be about 2/3 the length it is. He repeats everything.

It's good to read, but anyone saying it's crucial is retarded. It's like 300 pages and he repeats the same thing every 50 pages or so. I was really disappointed. He states one major claim and then repeats the same idea over and over again, I felt kind of ripped off after reading the whole thing. I've heard tipping point is no different.

It's a good read, but I'm not sure how much it can help you in poker. It basically tells you to trust your instinct (moreso than your conscious rational mind), but any experienced poker player knows this. This theme is repeated through numerous examples, some of which are nontrivial; poker (had he chosen to include it) would have simply been another such example in this book.

so it's better than the 3.5 out of 5 stars after 700 reviews it got on amazon?

one of his points is that experts in any field can usually come to the correct conclusion faster and more reliably then non-experts can, even after thorough analysis. i think that's applicable to poker, though not really useful. He also talks about bias and how to guard against it (this is pretty cool). It was a good read, but I don't think it really makes you a better poker player, though it might inspire your reads more often.

I thought the same thing. Some of the tipping point is also complete bs, like the falling crime rates in NY being due to stopping graffiti. I have more trust in the authors of Freakenomics who argued much more convincingly that it was access to legal abortion.

If I had to rate it I would give it something between 3 and 4 stars leaning towards 3, so 3.5 seems like a reasonable rating. It was a fun (and fast) read, as opposed to an instructional read.
