Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
I just happened upon this upcoming release while searching "limit hold em" on amazon. It appears to be coming out in May some time. Can anyone comment on the author or shed some light on the expected quality? Tanenbaum is also collaborating on a shorthanded text with Terry Borer and Lawrence Mak due out in August. I say that as though I've ever heard of these guys. Both books are to be published by D&B, the publishers of Byron Jacobs and Rolf Slotboom books.

Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
Barry Tanenbaum is a columnist for Card Player, so if you want to see what his writing is like, check out an issue or their web site. Personally, he's my favorite writer for that magazine, and I know he's a successful player, so this is a book that I'm anticipating more than most.

Looks like that will be a very good book.

Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
I've taken a lesson from Barry in the past and he is very good at getting his point across in a straightforward, easy to understand fashion. I think he is one of the best thinkers of the game out there and I will definitely pick this one up.

barry plays 5 nights at the bellagio 30/60, 40/80 and is a 2bb or more winner over the long haul.

[/ QUOTE ] I think you need to try Roy Cook's articles, they are much better than Barry's. Also when Byron Jacob's submits an article they are really great as well. Personally I'm not a Barry fan, his communication skills aren't what you would expect from a teacher but I'm willing to check out the book before judging. His shorthanded book concerns me, Barry plays mostly full ring games at the B - unless he has been practicing short handed games online in secret I don't think he has the background for this book. Luckily he is working for Byron Jacobs who is the publisher, Byron is a short handed and HU expert. |

I don't have a problem with how Barry communicates. Barry's articles tend to be more strategy and situation based. i.e. "Here's a situation on the flop. Here a several options. I like Play X because blah blah. Here's what you to consider on the turn if A happens, b happens, c happens etc." I find this approach best for me to learn. Cooke's columns are usually just hand histories and too often they tend to read like "Here's a hand I played against a bad player. By the river I had second nuts (or some monster hand), I kept betting but the bad player had the nuts. Oh well. I'm still happy with how I played it though" I have heard really good things about Cooke's book (Real Poker or something along those lines) which I haven't had a chance to check out yet (but I plan to). I haven't payed too much attention to Jacob's because I don't play alot of shorthanded games yet. I plan to start learning soon and will definately be consulting some of his articles/books as I've heard many echo your opinions of him. |

All of these guys are quality poker writers. There's really no reason to choose one or the other. Read them all.

I have also had the opportunity to meet and talk with Mr. Tannenbaum. I would purchase any book he writes.

[/ QUOTE ] Boy has this forum changed. 1 year ago people would be chuckling if someone said anything positive about lee Jone's book even the third edition, although everyone agrees its better than the prior two) - instead advising the poster to read Small Stakes Hold'em (the bible on how to play low limit loose and passive Hold'em games). |
Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
Barry is a close friend of mine so I may be a little biased. But I've been coached by him, sweated him, played with him and had many long discussions about poker with him, so I don't think my affection for Barry clouds my thinking. Here's my opinion. Barry is a superb player, coach, writer and thinker. If his book is anything like his coaching sessions, and I'm sure it will be, you will make money from reading it and applying what he teaches.

Greywolf - A Barry shorthanded book, I find that odd (but I am glad he is doing it). Whats his experience, where is he putting in the hours to play short?

Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
He is listed as a Collaborator to the 2 main authors on the short handed book. Looks like he has a similar role to Ed Miller's on Professional No-Limit.
I very much enjoy Barry's Card Player articles. |

Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
IT seems every one but grey wolf is off the mark here.
Barry does play 60 120 at the Bellagio but has cut back his hours severly over the last few months. although I have seen him out and about more often lately I dont think he's playing 5 nights at this time. Now I dont know personally for sure but I think the 2 BB/ hour statment is off the mark as well. Multi tableing 30-60 heads up online and heads up S&Gs are his forte' from what I gather from discussions we have had. more on his book at his site. timmer |
Re: Advanced Limit Holdem Strategy by Barry Tanenbaum
Hi. Thanks to those who participated in this thread.
Allow me to provide some facts: 1. I am the sole author of Advanced Limit Hold'em Strategy. 2. Terry Borer and Lawrence Mak, two experts in short-handed limit hold'em, who the short-handed book. I "collaborated" in that I read all of the words, commented extensively on the book, layout, poker logic, and totality of the advice. I spend a great many hours on it. Larry, Terry, and I think this book will set a standard or short-haded play, and many players will learn quite a bit. 3. I have played many hours of short-handed play on-line, and have coached dozens of short-handed players. Currently, I am mostly playing heads-up NL SnG's on Stars, with a little SH and a bit of HORSE. I do it for amusement, to kill some time, and because it is fun. I am doing extremely well at the heads-up games, and OK at the others. 4. I no longer play 5 nights a week. I became ill in January and have not fully recovered. I play once or twice a week, and spend the rest of my "playing time" working on the books. Mine will be sent to the publisher in a couple of weeks (the SH book is already there). 5. I do not now and never have made 2 BB/hr, though I wish I did. Last year I made $110 per hour at $30-$60, but it was my best year. In my seven pro years, I have never made less than $60 per hour in any year, and my hourly has increased every year but one. Now that Bellagio is spreading $60-$120 more routinely, I am playing that game more. 6. Some of my past columns will appear in my book, but much will be new unpublished material. 7. After publication, both books will have their own forums in the forum area of my own website, www.barrytanenbaum.com. I will also stop by here to answer questions if I can. Thanks to those who enjoy my CardPlayer columns. I try hard to write things that have not been covered before, at least in the depth I cover it. I am delighted so many people follow them. -barryt |

When the Pokerbear talks, we listen. It is worth it, and a delight. I have been fortunate to know him and it's been a great experience. His books will be among the best. Trust me.
