Official Barry Bonds Countdown Thread

Barry Bonds is the man. He blasted number 735 tonight, and he now stands only 21 away from Hank Aaron's record. Hopefully he stays healthy enough to do it this season.

I might be the only other person in this thread who throws some love to Barry but so be it. He was the greatest player of his era before and after the whole steroid controversy. He's taking the heat for all the clowns who did the roids and just didn't have near the talent that he had. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who questions whether this guy should be in the Hall obviously didn't see him play before all this steroid BS.

Edited to Add: Go Bonds! I hope he plays next year too.

I was hoping a Giant would get on in the 9th to give Barry a chance to tie the game. They left him standing on deck.

I’ve gone back and forth and back again on this whole episode, and there are enough poor decisions and plenty to dislike from all sides.

I personally don’t like Bonds and will not be happy to see him break the record, but at this point it only has to do 25% with the steroid issue, and 75% b/c I just don’t like him.

Just showed it on sportscenter, and yeah, he took off towards home, stopped 2/3rds of the way there, then tried to slide in under the tag. Weird.

That had to be a botched double steal. Only possible explanation.

Yeah, that's what the SC anchor duder said hesitantly. From the clip, though, the catcher pretty clearly tries to signal a pitch out while the pitcher is in the middle of his motion. The pitch is high an outside, so it works, but sometime during the delivery/catch, the Cards' batter also seems to motion Pujols back to third. The problem is that Pujols is maybe 10-15 feet from the plate. Even so, Pujols stops, then starts again, at which time its an easy tag.

If you're a runner, it seems like once you're that close there is zero chance of stopping and then reaching any base safely, short of an error. I have to wonder if it was just instinct or surprise that made Pujols stop, or if he honestly misjudged a ball so badly he thought he could make it ~80 feet back to third.

Does a-rod have a shot at this record? I think he'd need 35/year for the next like 8 years. He's 31 now.

Forget about the roids.

From what I've read, seen and heard from him over the years, I think Bonds is pretty much the biggest ass hole I've ever seen in sports who isn't a criminal like OJ or Rae Carruth.

So F Bonds and his bloated beachball sized head. I wish pitchers would start drilling him in the back instead of letting him hit HRs, and I wish Hank Aaron would hire someone to kneecap him Tonya Harding-style.

When ARod signed his big contract with the Rangers, his agent Scott Boras presented the Rangers with a statistical analysis which showed ARod could crack 1,000 home runs in his career.

He had 464 entering this year (and a quick 9 so far in 2007). His 35 home runs in 2006 were the fewest he's had since 1997. Since he became a full time player in 1996, he's averaged 41.7 homers per year (39.7/year with Yankees). He would only need to do that for seven more seasons to reach 755.

He'd have to average 41.2 home runs per year for the next thirteen seasons in order to actually reach 1,000 homers. He'd be 43 years old in that thirteenth season (2019).
