Music you like that\'s not considered great
Inspired by recent music threads, I'm thinking of rock groups that don't necessarily receive widespread critical acclaim or alot of people can't stand, but you personally enjoy listening to. These would be artists who don't receive much critical repect, are not considered influential, not in the rock hall of fame, but are among your favorites to listen to.
heres some of mine: Rush Dire Straits Chicago (early material) John Mellencamp George Thorogood |

Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
Several of the artists you name are certainly considered great by most critics. Seriously man, Rush is incredibly critically acclaimed.

Who I actually thought of when I read this thread title for myself would be: Barenaked Ladies Drive-by Truckers Cross Canadian Ragweed |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
i see your point. they're not in hall though. Thorogood, though, I can't turn him off when he comes on the radio

Rush [/ QUOTE ] Huh? Rush no critical respect??? One of the most technically proficient bands ever. Everybody say, "Geddy Lee!" Who's Geddy Lee? Geddy Lee, best bass player EVER, come on! |

I liked Rush back in the day, and while they were all really respected musicians, were they really "incredibly critically acclaimed"? Hm - I can see 2112 receiving critical raves, maybe Moving Pictures, but not really anything else. I am pretty sure early-Chicago is really respected and considered influential - definitely Dire Straits. -Al |

I like Creed and apparently everyone who's cool doesn't.

I love Ween but I think it's only my friends who don't think they great.
Maybe I should get new friends.... |

Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
Michael Jackson is a creepy loser, but no one dismisses his music because of his creepiness. Do you guys hate Creed just because Stapp is a douchebagg, or do you think their music sucks too?
|
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
MJ made good music before he turned creepy, Stapp was probably disliked all along
|
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
i don't care if this is cool or not but i really like both of justin timberlake's albums and i don't care who knows.
the critics are mixed i think and no one really considers his stuff great, but..... i have tons of "indie" cred with my friends and have a huge music collection and good taste with all of my favorite bands and songs.......but i feel like letting the world know the JT is a cool white guy who has made good solo albums is important for us all. LOL. it is true. J. |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
DD - Well for me both, but I could dislike them based solely on Stapp. Look at that photo montage it's so horrible!

In a way, you feel that Mike can't help being a weirdass, but you can not be a douchebag. Also, he made Thriller, man. Thriller. |

LOL. it is true. J. [/ QUOTE ] At this point, JT has to have crossed the threshold from wussy boy in a boy band to badass. He banged Britney at the apex of her hotness, tagged Cameron Diaz's hot little ass for a couple of years and now he's working his way through the Hollywood A-list one by one. |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
The Cult, Stabbing Westward, Korn, Tool, BoDeans, Urge Overkill, Meatloaf, School of Fish, Linkin Park, Joe Jackson

Alice in Chains

Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
J Brown,
JT is awesome and the whole world knows it. My addition: Tegan and Sara. So bad, but whenever they come on the radio I can't turn it off. (a HS station here plays them a lot) |

JT is awesome and the whole world knows it. [/ QUOTE ] The guy has done absolutely everything right to transition from 'N Sync to where he is now. Picked the right producers, banged the right chicks, said the right things. Very impressive. JT Anecdote: I was at Chicken Zankou with a friend (it's an Armenian joint in LA, best schwarmas and roast chicken ever), it's kind of ghetto but the food is fantastic. Anyway in walks JT who gets in line behind us. Line is long and he strikes up conversation with us, about how the line is always long but worth it for the food. Comes off as a friendly, nice guy. Anyway turns out JT is at Zankou to pick up a bunch of food for his staff for some production company he started. I thought that was pretty cool considering what a huge star the guy is. -Al |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] JT. That's an awesome story. And I loves me some schwarma.

Obv they're not considered great but Southern Rock Opera and The Dirty South (DBT records) got some pretty good reviews. |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
The Muse.
Best band out there by far. One of the most talented bands I've seen in a long time. By far the best 3-piece (although someone recently told me they picked up a road keyboardist). I have no idea why this band hasn't WTF-E'sploded all over the world. I've been a fan for 4 years or so, and when they've come to town it's gone from a club whose circuit breaker couldn't keep up with their gear, to stadiums... so they've gotten somewhat bigger. |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
i have to agree with the others, Rush, Mellencamp and Dire Straits have all been critically acclaimed at some point in their careers.
For me: The Cars Berlin A Flock of Seagulls |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
Meatloaf, The Cult, Joe Jackson. good choices

Also check out the Hindu Love Gods, where Zevon is Vocalist w/ REM, minus Stipe. |
Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
yeah i considered zevon a marginal addition to the list, i think a lot of people from my generation (in their twenties) don't really know who he is, and other than "Werewolves of London" he doesn't get any radio play

Re: Music you like that\'s not considered great
If the Drive-By Truckers aren't considered great, then I guess that's mine too. They are truly awesome.

I'm not really sure how Phish isn't considered great. You may think they're a bunch of dirty hippies but their musical greatness cannot be denied.
