All you can suck out, baby!

I tried posting this in Tournament Circuit, but the feedback I got was absolutely worthless. I guess maybe it belongs in this forum because it's a BEAT. Seemed like a good story to me. Hope you enjoy it.

I normally do not tell bad beat stories, for a few reasons, but I decided to make an exception today based on the circumstances and the severity of the beat.

Today I played Event #6, $550 NL, at the WSOP Circuit Event at Caesar's Indiana. For some reason, the poker room managers decided to run a bunch of live games regardless of the fact that Event #6 was being played at noon and was followed by Event #7 ($550 PLO w/ rebuys) at 3 PM. As a result, the room could not accomodate the 400+ players at noon. Therefore, there were over 100 alternates, which seems ridiculous to me when they could just not run some of those side games for a little while...but that's another story.

Anyway, about an hour and a half in, they are still seating alternates when a player goes broke at our table. Guess who the lucky alternate is...Men "The Master" Nguyen. Of course this creates quite a buzz at our table and among the railbirds. Not too many pros were around this week. The only other "TV" pro I saw was Young Phan.

Men was a riot. He sits down and starts talking and joking around with everyone. It was a blast. Plus, he signed autographs for everyone at the table and a couple railbirds as well.

Sometimes on TV he comes off as a jerk and I know he has a bad reputation in some circles, but he was a really nice and fun guy today. Maybe he only gets a little abrasive when he drinks. He said he won't drink before 6 PM.

He intended to play the Omaha at 3 PM, and it was already 1:30 by this time. He was getting into a lot of pots and mixing it up. At the 50-100 level, he was down to about 700 (we started with 2,000). One hand, he open-pushed from middle position and some guy near the button with less than 2,000 himself decided to look Men up with KJ offsuit. Flop and turn are all rags, but Men spikes a 10 on the river to stay alive. The table goes nuts.

About 10 minutes later came one of the sickest hands I've ever been involved in. I'm down to 975 myself thanks to a previous cooler. I pick up AQ of diamonds in middle position and raise to 300. It folds to Men in the small blind, who immediately gives us the patented "All you can eat, baby," and puts his stack in. He has me covered by a few hundred. Well, I figured he had me beat, but AQ was the hand I picked, and since I already put in 30% of my stack, I figured it was good enough to go broke with there, rather than leave myself with 675 and the blinds soon to be 100-200 with a 25 ante.

I said, "This hand can't be good, but it would be pretty cool to get knocked out by the Men the Master." I call.

Men says, "Suited," and turns over AJ of hearts. Sweet. (Me 67%)

The flop comes Qc5d3d. Nice. Very nice. (Me 98%)

Turn is the Ks. This improves Men from 0 outs to 3 outs. Haha. (Me 93%)

You guessed it...River: 10h. (Men 100%)

The table explodes, obviously, and I'm just dumbfounded. I shake Men's hand and make a quiet exit. He said something about how he can't believe it and I said, "Yeah I have no idea how I lost with that flop."

It's probably the sickest beat I've ever taken considering the flop, but it's a story I'll be telling for a long time. Cool that it was Men who did it.

Very well written.

You play bad at poker, though, and it's astonishing I can tell that considering you didn't really post any hand histories.

Re: All you can suck out, baby!

Yeah, I am a donk and even I know that raising 300 w/AQ when you only have a stack of 975 is bad. If you folded to his reraise, my head might of exploded.

I guess it's OK to play bad as long as you consistently find people who play worse.

It might have ?

I was not going to fold my hand. I made the standard raise to increase the chances of someone with a worse hand giving me action. I actually got exactly what I wanted in this particular instance (until the river card came, that is).

Could you please explain the flaw in my reasoning?

that in and of itself is a losing mentallity. its not okay to play badly, especially if you are okay with your own poor play

I definitely agree that having alternates at any WSOP, WPT, or other semi-important tournament is completely bush league. There is no reason why they cannot come up with enough seats for everyone. As I said, single table satellites and cash games were running all over the place.

However, I disagree with you as to the reason why it's bush league. To me, it's a disadvantage to be an alternate. The blinds are not going to do a whole lot to your stack if you miss the 25-25 level and part or all of the 25-50 level. I didn't count the rotations or anything, but I don't think you would be decimated if you left your 2,000 starting chips unattended for the first two levels.

However, by missing the first hour and a half, you are missing several opportunities to get in there and win pots, possibly doubling up early. Also, you are coming to a table of unknowns generally, while those nine have been observing each other play for over an hour.

I would HATE to be an alternate. I was the first alternate in one of the daily cash tournaments down there, but someone went broke on the first hand, so I got in right away.

this is a standard push. doing anything else is just silly since you have a good hand in this situation and the blinds are great relative to your stack. there is no reason for you to do anythign else

Fine story, OP, nh.

They are spot-on about pushing there, tho, and correcting English use on an Internets forum is a fool's gambit.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I'm very surprised that the majority of people in this forum are so jaded that they cannot appreciate a story like this.

I am tired of hearing about how this is just a case of AQ losing to AJ when the money went in preflop. I know when the money went in and I know it's statistically not a terrible beat before the flop.

For the love of God though, how many times have you been 98% on the flop and lost? Furthermore, have you ever had it happen to you at the hands of one of the most widely recognized players in professional poker?

I don't know how many times I have to say this but:
1) I am not looking for advice on how to play the hand differently
2) I am not whining because I lost the pot

Therefore, if you read this story and you're not impressed, that's fine. I would really like to hear what stories some of you think meet the minimum requirement of worthiness to post.

Do we have to include our entire hand history, or only for this week?

I'm sure anyone who's played in the 10,000 of hands has been beaten when less than 1% to lose at the flop. Everyone has been beaten by runner runner to lose.

Not saying the story wasn't mildly interesting, but it's certainly not an unusal beat.

Well FYI, you're an english major. I think that is awesome. There are so many people that play poker now that you can't even talk to because they KNOW everything! I appreciate the story. I actually hate bad beat stories, that's why I never talk about them myself. But I found some humor in this. Good story.

I know that getting beat by AJ while holding AQ is not that big of deal. But after that flop it is highly unlikely. Apparently all the pro's reading this get sucked out on all the time. I guess that's the story of everyone's life. "Oh I'm a good player, I just get sucked out on." I don't know how many times I have heard that. I thought it was an excellent move. Only having 975 left, you know that you are moving all-in no matter what. But you don't want to shove right away just to have everyone fold and you pick up 200 or so chips and then you're still in the same situation you were in before. Trying to pick out another hand to move all-in with. You wanted action, you got action, it was just unfortunate that it turned out the way that it did.

Good story, and goodluck in the future.

when you play on the inttar web you get to play so many more hands that these kind of "beats" actually are standard. so to answer your question, more than i can count with my fingers.
