How much money would it take...

...to get you to never play a single hand of poker again in your life? That is, if someone came up to you and said I will write you a check if you stop playing poker, what would the minimum amount have to be?
edit: taxfree check

a written explaination is cool too

5mil I love poker too much and if I did it for 10+ years I'd expect to have that much by then.

200k-400k, I'm not a pro and I'm not too confident in the future of online poker.

Re: How much money would it take...

anybody saying 5m+ is a retard there are so many ways to make money with 5m than you could playing poker.

there are but I also enjoy poker as a hobby prior to it being a source of good income.

find a new hobby and make 500k/year doing nothing

Re: How much money would it take...

I agree w/ ogre pretty much on everything. I said 400k-1mill as I'm not confident in the future of poker, I'm not a "pro" as I'm still in school, I don't play on playing for the rest of my life, and 500k cash right now could set me up pretty damn well for the future while doing more productive things with my time. I think the people voting 5mill+ need to think about it a little more. No way should the majority be voting that

Re: How much money would it take...

the future of online poker is irrelevant for this question as big live events is what I care about most. I love the fact I can take a vacation to some area play a 10k buyin tourney and have a great week, losing that is something money can not replace.

JSchnett 04-01-2007 02:55 PM

Re: How much money would it take...

do you realize you could make 250k/year in interest alone with 5m? I'm pretty sure very few people can make that much a year on average on the live circuit. You could vacation every week and do nothing.

Re: How much money would it take...

Thing is, even with 5 million without poker my life has zero direction. I mean really being good at this is my only legitimate aspiration in life.

Take that away, and whats the point in getting out of bed?

hence the hobby part I could make 250k a year easily if I went back to school to be a stock broker plus whatever I get from my dads businesses as a partner. Really poker isn't even money for me now it's a hobby and what I win I can mess around with and have because I have many things to fall back on.

This is assuming you don't spend any of it in the first year. Why do many Superball/lottery winners end up broke in a matter of years?

i'm with shaun. 5m+.

i dont have a need for a lot of money right away, i LIKE my life, i am a 'pro' (for now atleast), 1m just wouldnt cut it. It'd be a tease, it's a lot of money, but i'd just want to play poker with it, and it's not enough that i could live completely outrageous.

Bond18 04-01-2007 11:32 PM

Re: How much money would it take...

This explanation might sound exaggerated but here it goes.

For those of us who are competitive, which is almost all poker players who aren't casual/recreational it will occur to you at some point at time your getting to old to ever be great at anything competitive.

For example, I'm 22. I'm in very good shape but it is already well to late for me to be a great professional athlete at basically any sport I can think of.

I have zero artistic or musical talents outside acting, which isn't really competitive so much as a crap shoot of self whoredom in order to have even a chance to be great.

Being great at a skill job such as say, medicine, requires years of study and intellect most of us either don't have or don't have the patience for. I know damn well I'm not smart enough to succeed in a world that required that level of professional study.

I think for some of us, those of us who wouldn't give this up for any amount of money, we've recognized our chance to be really excellent at something.

Being among the best in something, anything, has a value the competitive can't really put a price on.

In the traditional sense of 'meaningful', my life might be more so if i say, did something that helped people, contributed to society, raised a family, etc, but i know it wouldn't fulfill ME.

This is basically my only shot to be great at SOMETHING, and thats something i can't put a price tag on.

Re: How much money would it take...

poker causes me to be unhappy most of the time and really is just a pain in the ass besides the money factor for me, so I can see why it would take a lot more for some people to quit even if I will earn more than them playing.

sundays are great I win 10k in the AM in some random FO and then bubble everything that has a prizepool over 100k.

I put 40k-100k b/c if you give me 80k, I can not only take the money that I'd have to work for but now I have more time for other things for friends, family, and vacations.

Im not bitter at all really after the day but after bubbling 5 diff tourneys with 100k prizepool+ I get a bit annoyed.

Re: How much money would it take...

I feel like it wouldn't take much to get me to stop playing online. Recently I just don't enjoy it at all and I'm pretty sure I'm often playing pretty badly because of it. Live poker on the other hand is a lot of fun so it'd take a hell of a lot more for me to quit that.

Re: How much money would it take...

Pretty interesting question. Probably like 3 million. The possibility of poker being huge for me in the future(even though it's not really anything right now) and the one thing I have a real passion for makes even that possibly not enough, I don't know. But since it's guaranateed and can be used for interest/investments, save time and energy which poker can sometimes be a pain, I'd probably go for that.
