Sushi eating competition
OK, there was some talk of eating exploits in the NYC thread. Let's have an El D Forum sushi-eating competition.
Obviously there will be honor system involved here, whatever, I trust you guys. Let's talk about some rules. Nigiri = 1 piece. Should rolls be allowed? If so, what is the right piece of roll / nigiri ratio? How about other items like potstickers? OK, let's get some rules discussion going |
Re: Sushi eating competition
i think we should make this a west coast vs east coast competition and have both competitions take place where others are present. some of us eat in sf, some in nyc. good idea?
|
Re: Sushi eating competition
I don't understand the general premise of the contest -- is it a who-can-eat-more competition?
|
Re: Sushi eating competition
pj,
I'm gonna ponder that post of yours for a while before responding. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
i think cost analysis should be included for the true winner. anybody can order tamago and salmon and not break the bank.
it takes complete degeneracy to order the chu/oh toro, aji, usuzukuri, for an all you can eat contest. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
pj,
OK, let me ask a question for clarification. Are you wondering if the object of a sushi eating competition is to eat the most sushi? |

Re: Sushi eating competition
Shadow,
Yes, I could sound a lot more pretentious than that. |

I don't understand the general premise of the contest -- is it a who-can-eat-more competition? [/ QUOTE ] There are no losers in a sushi eating competition, but yes, the point is to eat the most sushi. Rolls should not be allowed, unless this competition is for schoolgirls. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
from your post OP it sounds like you haven't eaten much sushi before. nigiri is a lot more similar to each other than rolls, rolls can get pretty funky with mayonaise and lobster heavy stuff, or they can be pretty light (cucubmer rollies) so, yea... this contest be cotesting mucho dinero

pj, OK, let me ask a question for clarification. Are you wondering if the object of a sushi eating competition is to eat the most sushi? [/ QUOTE ] No. I'm wondering if the object of the competition is to: a) eat the most in a given time period b) eat the most in any time period but a given sitting c) eat the widest variety of sushi regardless of size/quantity per item d) eat at the most places during a given time period e) etc. f) etc. g) etc. You can't just say "it's a sushi eating competition" and expect that to suffice. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
plz plz plz let rolls be allowed.
|
Re: Sushi eating competition
Should rolls be allowed? If so, what is the right piece of roll / nigiri ratio?
For a roll wrapped in fish such as what we call on the east coast a dragon roll or a rainbow roll. One roll equals four nigiri. For a roll wrapped in seaweed one roll should equal three nigiri. How about other items like potstickers? How about Shumai? Can every bottle of Saki equal one roll? I think an East Coast vs West Coast would be kind of neat. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
Mr Bruiser,
so, yea... this contest be cotesting mucho dinero You could probably pay for all of us to compete and it would not put a dent in your bankroll |

Re: Sushi eating competition
pj,
Touché, my friend. However, any non-retard should assume from the OP that this is about going to a sushi place and consuming the most pieces in a single sitting (probably with some time limit). |
Re: Sushi eating competition
pj,
FWIW, I think it's pretty obvious that the object is quantity at a sitting. Widest variety????? All, I'm not usually a sushi snob, but a sushi competition like this is silly. Good sushi is to be savored. This would be like having a caviar eating competition. I absolutely HATE when I've eaten too much sushi, I feel so bloated. Slow and steady wins the race. EDIT: But I would attend the LA edition of this and obviously vote for Sushi Go 55, where they now recognize me because I've gone there like 6 out of the last 10 Saturday nights since y'all suggested it. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
SF people,
For SF competitors, I recommend Mas Sake for this: http://www.massake.com/ "Join us for Endless Sushi Sundays featuring All You Can Eat Sushi for $20" That is quite good sushi. There used to be a place called Sushi Chardonnay w/ all you can eat, it was the foulest crap around. This place also has all-you-can-eat. I haven't been, looks like reviews are mixed: http://www.sushi-hunter.com/menu1.htm |
Re: Sushi eating competition
LFS,
Isn't pretty much every eating contest silly? |
Re: Sushi eating competition
All,
I think the winner will be between 75-100 pieces. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
Count me in for the SF contingent.
i'll be a huge underdog, but I plan to make up for it in prop bets |
Re: Sushi eating competition
This calls for SUSHI PARADE.
I don't have the bankroll to be down, but I feel like I would be a strong contender. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
El Diablo -
I would like to suggest a rule to make this contest less likely to be terrible. Rule #1: You may only eat count each type of sushi that you eat as a single piece. Example: El Diablo and chopstick go to Sushi-a-go-go, El Diablo's secretly favorite sushi location. El Diablo orders ten pieces of spicy tuna nigiri and a couple of pieces of unagi nigiri. He also orders a California roll. chopstick orders avocado maki, and two pieces each of hamachi nigiri, magura nigiri, and tamago nigiri. El Diablo has 12 pieces of nigiri in front of him, as well as a roll. chopstick has a roll, and 6 pieces of nigiri. chopstick is the winner, even though El Diablo has more sushi on his plate. chopstick: 4 points, 1 for each type of sushi. El Diablo: 3 points, 1 for each type of sushi. http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4...ushicf6.th.jpg This plate would generate 7 points, even though there are 12 pieces on it. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
chopstick,
Maybe you should team up with pj while the rest of us have a real sushi eating competition. |

chopstick, Maybe you should team up with pj while the rest of us have a real sushi eating competition. [/ QUOTE ] <same vein> If you are afraid to compete, I completely understand and do not judge you for it. </same vein> Testing stomach capacity just doesn't seem as fun as trying a bunch of different stuff. I was thinking of another EDGD project - cuisine field trips. Pick a cuisine for the week, and everyone tries it, then we post trip reports. Photos required. Preference given to restaurant locations so that others can try the same thing, but home cooking allowed if it's amazing. Some basics required for trip report: Location information (name of restaurant, address, etc) Photos (exterior and interior of restaurant, all courses) Discussion (thoughts on food, service, misc) Some cuisine types: Jamaican, Korean, Indian, Italian, Peruvian, American, etc. |

Re: Sushi eating competition
I'm in.
There are decent all you can eat sushi places in socal - obviously not the best ever, but most cost efficient for something like this. Runs around $20 for all you can eat - less for lunch. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
I'm in, provided I can find an AYCE sushi place in the Dallas area that doesn't look gross.

Re: Sushi eating competition
Oh man,
Why did I open this thread? Sometimes I hate living in Italy. I miss sushi so much. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
I am about 78 kilo and think I eat a lot, but my friend which is below 50 kilo eats all her sushi then my leftovers, then orders more, so I think I should just accept defeat upfront. I think though that if you are allowed to sit 5-6 hours some can eat very much if they go on a very tough running trip or something before, since it is very digestable.

This place also has all-you-can-eat. I haven't been, looks like reviews are mixed: http://www.sushi-hunter.com/menu1.htm<br /> [/ QUOTE ] I ate at sushi hunter two weeks ago, the "regrettable," "brady bunch in hawaii," decor was serviced by a "giddy" staff that is most likely laughing "at you." The sushi selection and quality was standard, especially if you are a "desperate stray dog" or a "carny." The dragon roll is enthusiastically recommended to anyone in search for "the source" of "SARS." Are you eating at Sushi Hunter right now? If not, then the all-you-can-eat "food" special is "truth in advertising." For the record, here is a sushi eating contest that we can all learn from: nigiri is better because otherwise we all look like we're bobbitizing a giant roll. |

Re: Sushi eating competition
why not make it an all you can eat place in vegas or somewhere that a lot of edf-ers will be in. there are a number of places there that have 25 buck ayce/made to order sushi that's decent. you can make the winner the one who eats the highest dollar value based on the menu prices, so anything goes as far as form. These places usually have a one hour time limit as well, so you have that parameter taken care of for your contest.

Re: Sushi eating competition
this would make me really ill, and I love sushi. I've been in ice cream eating contests and buffalo wing eating contests and beer drinking contests, but something about sushi doesn't feel right.
also I would spend about $300, unless it was at Todai which we don't have here, and anyways I don't know if eating 100 pieces of sushi from Todai is something I want to do. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
[ QUOTE ]
All, I think the winner will be between 75-100 pieces. [/ QUOTE ] I disagree with this estimate, i have had similar competitions within my own family/friends with sushi, and at least 3 people went into triple digits. |
Re: Sushi eating competition
zero: Yes, you are probably correct.
belly: Haha, OK, nice. Now that looks totally familiar, well done. It has been forever since I read a Zagat. Citysearch, Yelp, and Gayot for me. |
