Creative ways of finding home games?

Hello I have been searching for a while but have only found 1 home game, can anyone else suggest some creative ways of finding or starting a home game?

"creative" ways?

As in like using construction paper to make a big sign to put in front of your house?
Or using origami to find a local home game?
Or paper mache a big animal and paint something on it?
Or scrapbooking something with frilly borders?
Or like finding a muse and sketching your own home game using charcoal or watercolors?

I'm honestly confused about what kind of creativity you're in need of here...

Maybe you just need some friends.

Hire a biplane to trail a banner.

Learn semaphore and stand by a lighthouse.

Pose as a telemarketer and start wardialing.

How to find players

1. Find people who enjoy studying literature. Maybe crash a book club or take a university class in Post-Modern Literary Theory. You'll be surprised how into poker those types are. And they're not bad -- they're excellent bluffers. That shouldn't be surprising, though, seeing how they believe "truth" is a mere social construction....
Surprisingly, the math/stats/engineer types aren't as much into it. Probably because they believe in truth. And because they realize they can make more money by graduating sooner and getting a real job...

2. Be a social butterfly and good networker. Recruit friends of friends via MySpace or a friend's BBQ. Talk about poker in passing, and see if they bite.

3. Try meeting people on Internet dating sites. Ask people out on a date, and see how into "games" they are. The next "date" will be at your tourney, which may include previous "dates". (Make them go Dutch on the buy-in, but exempt them from BYOB rules... for the first night only, of course.)
This is how I got one of my regulars (This is true!).

4. Call up some old ex-girlfriends/boyfriends that you are on good terms with. If he/she is exceptionally bad at cards, offer to recind the restraining order, or at least not enforce it.
Also, tell them they can invite their current partner, also.

[I'm totally serious about all these points.]

5. Finally, if you find people who are looking for a home game, tell them that rather than doing a Texas Hold'em tourney, you will instead hold a 7-Card Stud Eight-Or-Better game. That'll get them stampeding to your kitchen table....
[I'm obviously NOT serious about this one, though.]

Good luck,
-diz

If you don't have a local casino to network at, lots of bars have NLHE tourneys. Many of the participants will also have or know of poker games. Just mention in passing that you're looking for one (and if you purposely play badly in the tourney it might be +EV to you getting invited.... heh).

I have a group of guys that I play with pretty regular. I tell them to invite atleast one or two friends each time we play. It seems to be working. Ask everyone you know, ask them if they'd like to learn how to play if they don't know how too.

Tell them to come over a little earlier before the game starts and show them the basics, I've let people watch an entire game and the next game I've had they are in it. Works everytime. Keep your buy-ins low or atleast not out of the reach of a beginner player.

Be friendly with these people, get to know them, ask for their email address, ask for thier cell or phone numbers. Always invite them to play. Usually when I contact them, they will ask if they can bring a friend...

...and so on, and so on, etc.

I'm hoping to reach my max for players in about another tournament or two (which is 18). If it gets any bigger than this I will have to move it out to the two car garage and build another table (my wife will kill me for sure ).

Good Luck!

Re: Creative ways of finding home games?

I have used Home Poker Games and Meet Up for a few years now and those two sites have built a pretty deep player list for me. At first my wife was not crazy about me inviting strangers over to my house, but in 4 years we have not had any problems. There are probably a lot of decent people (like you, I assume) thinking the same thing you are... where can I find a game? A lot of people start their search on the internet.

Good luck.
