*World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
There has to be a couple of you out there who are interested in what this weekend has to bring.
Tiger has the lead by two right now but there are a host of BIG names right behind him. It's the same old story but this could go a number of ways. It's very hard not to look ahead to Augusta of course, but with this field/leaderboard it almost has that major feel. I'm a huge Tiger fan but I'm also very excited to see what comes of Henrick Stenson in the near future, and this week is another part of that process. I know he wants nothing more than to play in the last group on Sunday with TW tied for the lead. If he beats Tiger the first time they play in that type situation, the media will jump all over it saying he is THE guy to replace Tiger on his throne. Nothing is a given in golf (except Tiger ownage) but Stenson seems like the real deal. I must also say how happy I am to see Phil sitting at +5. If I can only be so fortunate after two rounds come Augusta Should be some good golf this weekend Anybody care? |

I like Henrick but I haven't yet see him display the variety of short game shots that he would need to win at Augusta. I think there are only 20 or so players that have any chance of winning the masters... Henirck is among them about at the same odds I would give CH3. |
Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
Jason Sobel said this in an ESPN.com column on Wednesday
Sobel - "When Henrik Stenson can ascend to No. 5 in the world despite playing only seven career majors and Nick O'Hern can reach No. 17 without any career wins on the PGA or European tours, the Official World Golf Ranking needs some fixing." Stenson is making a name for himself and deserves to be considered a top notch player. It would be great to see him in the last group or 2nd to last group on Sunday. Ogilvy and Singh are also lurking. This does have the feel of a major in a way. |
Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
I too want to see how Stenson's short game holds up under Augusta type pressure/conditions.
His only downside it seems may very well be in the touch department around the greens. Jason Sobel is an idiot at times.....this would be one of them. The two year revolving points system is almost perfect IMO. I don't want to go through and break down all of Stenson's pts that are counting towards his ranking right now, but in my opinion he deserves it no question. |

[/ QUOTE ] I was pretty vague last night in my earlier post. I agree that the World Ranking system is legit. I posted Sobel's comments to frame him as ignorant on this topic (i.e. he slams Stenson and then two days later Stenson is in the thick of a big time tourney that features all the big time players). |

course must be playing a lot harder than it was last year...when Tiger shot 23 under and then something like 22 under the year before.

Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
Tiger in the lead? I'll watch. I wish they would stop showing this other trash though. I'd rather hear them talk about tiger as he walks to his ball or talks to his caddie.

Ernie Els - rut roh.
Damn, Tiger with a solid approach on #17 from 87 yards. |

I've played plenty of times on greens with cigar butts and sunflower seed shells, why would I suddenly care about someone spitting into a cup? |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a televised PGA Tour event, not you and your buddies hacking it up at the local muni. Naturally this is going to be a news item in the staid arena of golf. Garcia has tumbled out of the World Golf Rankings top 10 and many ppl his age or slightly older are starting to steal some spotlight from him. His frustration with his game and his putter is obvious and his inability to win a major will only tighten the screws on him (think Phil circa 2001- 2003). |

Then got pissed when the reporter asked him again after saying this was the last time he was going to talk about the incident. |

I'm not saying it was a classy move, but it's been blown out of proportion. tdk, that's funny, a friend just called to bitch about the hockey game going into OT. At least it was decided and wasn't dragged out longer for a shootout. |
Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
I don't think other tour players are leaving cigar butts or sunflower seeds on the greens during a tournament. Also, I don't know what exactly you are touching in the course of a round that is so unsanitary.

Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
What a miserable putt by Wetterich on 17. Sheesh, totally let's Tiger off the hook on 18.
Say, anyone here think Phil would've hit iron off 18 with a three shot lead? OMG, what an approach by Wetterich. Watch him lose by one, get the 800K, and be kicking himself all night. EDIT: Oh, f'crissakes Wetterich. |
Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
All Tiger had to do was show up on the final round. I mean no one really applied any pressure to him. I don't think it would've mattered anyways, whenever the pressure increases Tiger will just one-up his competitors as usual. I didn't watch all of his final round, but I assume he was playing it conservatively and just putting anything good enough for the W.
|
Re: *World Golf Championship* Doral....Discussion Thread
4 or 5 shots ahead is just too much for that course. What was the low round of the tourney.. 66? There was only a handful of players close enough to make him shoot under par even if they matched that.
I thought Tiger's round was actually pretty sloppy. He screwed up several lag putts and missed some short ones too. His ball striking was fantastic though. He should have been 4 or 5 under. |

Also, I don't know what exactly you are touching in the course of a round that is so unsanitary. [/ QUOTE ] Christ just let it go, nit. I'm not exactly Howard Hughes although I wash my hands quite a bit - before every meal, several times/day, etc. But germs are everywhere and some saliva in a golf cup is a 1 in 100,000 annoyance, and it's not like I'm going to lick my goddamned golf ball afterwards anyway. If this shows up in the upcoming week via wire stories or quotes from the pros then I'll think it mattered, but the fact is they don't care and you're just some guy on the internet who feels that he must pointlessly defend his position. If there was a mild surprise, it was that Wetterich did a decent job of hanging around. It's slightly reminiscent of Bob May in 2000 in the PGA at Valhalla, although May actually led going into the final round by one IIRC. Glad I went golfing instead of sticking around for the end of this one. |
