What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

What has been your most profitable game online, or what do you THINK/KNOW is the most profitable type of poker? This isn't a complete list, but features the more common games available at most Online Cardrooms. Its expected many will think more than just one game is more profitable than others, so feel free to check which ones you think are the bigger moneymakers. I categorized them into such things as different limits, and variations of the same game.I'm sure this will be pretty interesting to see.

Not nearly enough votes to show a trend, but right now its looking like holdem. Im wondering if its because thats the game most are familiar with, or actual mathematical backing.

Poker Site Scout

Looks like there are about 15x as many cash hold em players as stud players.

I don't think the answer is hold 'em. It only has the most votes because its the most popular and most people haven't even played other games (including me). There is no way it can be the most profitable because they teach you how to play on TV and there are 4950443549939 books on it.

Re: What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

yeah i hear ya... but to holdems defense there still is a bunch of horrible players. I think the way to make the most profit has changed though. Online and in B&M, there still is a bunch of weaktight losers, but there has been an increase in aggresiveness. This is ok though too, because alot of them are now loose which makes it easier to tighten up and only play the biggies. Holdem has alot bigger fluctuations though, especially NL. But as with stocks and other investments, higher risk= higher reward.

Re: What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

one thing thats interesting is all the SNG votes. Most of the literature I've gone through hasnt really boosted up SNGs as a profitable game. I know Phil Gordon doesn't really advise them. But maybe thats because he hasnt really played them, so hes speaking in theory- not from experience.

I make a killing at NL Stud H/L.

Re: What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

I honestly don't like it all that much. It's slow and to play it right, you can't play many hands. But so far, despite not having played that many hands, pot limit Omaha hi has been my most profitable game per 100 hands.
But I think that I have been more lucky at Omaha than NL Holdem which I prefer.

Youre entitled to your opinion, and thats fine, but i tried to construct the poll to list every game most commonly played today, so I have to say I disagree. Everyone is better at a certain game they play or at least have more knowledge of it than their opponests, thus making it more profitable for them.

Re: What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

one thing in the SNGs defense is that some sites actually may give BETTER odds of winning than your normal tournament. I've noticed that at FTP the payout is 20%, which isn't bad considering many of the touneys you'll find are around 10-12%.

In order to list the games "most commonly played today" you would only need to list four or five, maximum, perhaps you did not do this because you do not play much poker yourself, no problem. To enlighten you, some of the games you have listed are VERY far and few between i.e. NL Stud H/L, Limit Omaha Hi, etc.

Perhaps consult with one of the more knowledgeable posters about recreating your poll if you want better results.

Re: What\'s Your Most Profitable Poker Game?

no its no problem man, im sure you had a reason. More what I was referring to is which games are commonly available. Its hard to find certain varieties anymore, like old-fashioned 5-card draw, or stud8/tripledraw, etc. so I excluded them. About every option I had listed is one you could find in your standard B&M or an online pokersite. I listed razz because FTP offers it, but I don't think too many other sites do. Some places don't even offer mixed games, yet.

I've made a pretty good clip playing PL and NL Omaha 8 the last 2 weeks, and I don't even know what I'm doing. I could see Stud 8 being the same way. People just suck at hi/lo games, especially big bet hi/lo games.

just to warn you the variance is sick in omaha, not saying you are a poor player by any means, just something to be aware of.

All the stud hi/lo and omaha hi/lo games I've seen online have been stud8 or omaha8.

Pokerstars offers 2-7TD, 5CD, and razz. I think NL 2-7TD was my most profitable game ever for the week or so that it was rake free on Pokerstars and no one knew how to play.

I've never seen NL Stud before.

I clean up at that Brick & Mortar game. If only they would offer it online.

Also I have a feeling triple draw can be very profitable. But very very swingy.

Mr Jones: Your poll is fine. I found it interesting. But then again, I don't already know everything like some folks apparently think they do. In any event, despite the mathematical uncertainess of it all and those who find slap-stick humor in voting incorrectly (love to party with those zany guys) I don't think you need to go to 2+2 remedial class.

I agree with ya there, i thought holdem was bad until i started to play omaha8. The splitpots and quarters make the rake that much more worse, and even though theres bad players i think it takes a little longer than holdem till they dry up. We've all seen that crazy guy walk away with 5x more than he sat down with, but not very often. Its easy to forget when they go bust because they usually go out in silence, but when theyre winning, everyone seems to notice. In omaha, the swings are more extreme for everyone.
