Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
[ QUOTE ]
Tubby Smith has resigned as basketball coach at the University of Kentucky and will accept the same position at the University of Minnesota, according to sources close to Smith and to the university. Smith, whose record is 263-83 in 10 seasons at UK, will take over a program that played most of this season with an interim coach, Jim Molinari, at the helm. The Gophers’ head coach, Dan Monson, resigned last November at the start of the season. Smith reportedly told the UK players today that his contract in Minnesota is $2.5 million a year. Smith had been under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks after back-to-back second-round losses in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats lost seven of their last 11 games and lost a combined 25 games the past two seasons – the most ever in a two-year window at UK that was not affected by NCAA probation. UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart could not be reached for comment. [/ QUOTE ] Link |

Sweet, that job was scaring me as a WSU fan.

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Wow, that's a big F-U to the UK nation, isn't it?
"You can't fire me, I quit!" I wonder if UK goes after Gillispie now. |
Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Whoa.

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Good move by him, I think he was really underappreciated at UK .

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Wow, saw it coming, but wow! [Not Minn, just in general.]

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Sorry day for Big Blue.

Alot of his talent comes from his recruiting skills and alot of that stems from him putting his time in thought the texas HS system. |

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
I'm pretty broken up over this and I don't know what to think. I love Tubby and think he's been very underappreciated, but also feel that his teams have underachieved for a while. I guess I'm a fairly standard UK fan, though significantly less of a redneck. I do feel like most of us act entitled to incredible success, and act like a bunch of babies when we don't get there. And we haven't gotten there in a while, so it hasn't been a pleasant environment. This was pretty much inevitable.
In the long run, I feel this is for the best. Tubby hasn't had true support of this fan base for a long time, if ever. He never even gets full credit for his championship run in '98. I don't think he's been happy for a while, and he's put up with quite a lot from the fans and the media. It's been fun, Tubby. Hopefully UK can find a worthy successor. Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
What's the over/under on the # of high profile coaches who turn down the Kentucky job now?
|
Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
That's the issue. I'm sure Barnhart thinks he can get anyone, but I have a feeling he's in for a rude awakening.

[/ QUOTE ] This goes for me personally, and all have been rumored although the tops are admittedly not very realistic: 1) D'Antoni 2) Pat Riley 3) Donovan 4) Gillespie 5) Pearl 6) Anyone else besides Tubby. Hell even the VCU coach. As for Minnesota, congratulations! Tubby will beat the bad teams in 50-45 games, win you 18 games and occasionally win a tournament game. He will be great for your program. $1.8 million well spent. |

UK fans would Lowery be a canidate for the job?

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Also, one thing no one should underestimate is how high Barnhart will shoot, and how deep the pockets are (esp. for basketball) here at Kentucky. We just built a $30M practice facility, done largely with booster money. We were paying $2.1M for mediocre results. I'm pretty sure we will find a coach who's willing to coach for that much (or maybe considerably more).
Bill Parcells would have been Kentucky's football coach (for an obscene amount of money) had Jerry Jones not intervened. |

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
My guess is, given the shortcomings of the Tubby Era, they will try to bring in:
1) A guy with Kentucky ties. 2) A guy who plays an up-tempo, entertaining style. And please - waste no time weeping for the UK program. I live right across the street from central campus and people are celebrating like we just won WW II again. Stick to your [censored] basketball program where 20 wins is a tremendous season. Carry on. |
Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
Rumor has it that Mike D'Antoni is on a plane for Lexington, KY, at the moment.

[censored] Pat Riley. If he never wants to publicly support UK after going there he can eat [censored] before he thinks he's going to coach there.

It comes down to this: In ten years, Tubby had 3 good teams - meaning, 3 teams that could have potentially won the title. (Maybe four if you count the 2004 team which was decent and which Tubby coached right out of the tournament.) The '98 team had Pitino's players, who had played in back-to-back title games, and they did things their way. I give Tubby all the credit in the world for the success of the 2002 and 2003 teams. But 2/9 doesn't cut it at UK. Note: Tubby Smith has never been to a Final Four with players he recruited. Ever. He will be great for Minnesota. I hope they revel in their NCAA tourney appearances. Congratulations. |

Re: Tubby Smith resigns, taking Minnesota job
The saddest person in this entire scenario is Kevin Stallings (the Vanderbilt coach). He had beaten Tubby 4 straight times at a school that doesn't have an athletic department.
Same goes for Donovan (5 or 6 straight UK wins) and Pearl, assuming they remain in their current positions. If not D'Antoni, Donovan will be the next call I'm sure. He has no contract for next year at Florida. |

I'm not sure his earning potential is high enough elsewhere to justify leaving. |
