Proper Way to Look at Hole Cards

Tried to search for this and could'nt find anything. As an AC regular, I've recently started to feel as though I may not be protecting my hand as best as possible. Is there any Proper way to look at your hole cards? I hold the cards horizontally and cup them with my right hand while lifting them with my left. Is this considered the most secure way to check your cards? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Can other people see the cards? if not, you're doing it properly.

i don't hold them horizontal or vertical, i hold them diagonal and just lift the corner that I need to see suit and rank with my thumb while blocking the view with the rest of my hand, while cupping/blocking with my other hand.

bring them to ur chest. but do so slowly...u wud hate to move the game along. then, from ur chest, begin to bring them up to ur nose. then spread them, look at them, and begin to bring them back down towards the felt. take ur time, ... then do what u need to do

also, as a bonus, when the dealer tells u to keep ur cards on the table, blatently ignore him and continue doin this for the rest of his down.

Watch the other players. See what looks good.
Especially your 'neighbors'. If you can see their cards, you know what not to do.

Some funny answers. I like the question though: given the way I look at my cards, I wish I was a bit shorter, as I end up hunched down in the chair so I don't have to lift the edge of the cards beyond a certain angle. Really uncomfortable at the end of a long session.

also....dont hesitate to do this 2, sometimes 3 times, before actually actting in turn. and, just to clariffy, you should always recheck your hole cards on every street. yes...even in 7stud.

On balance, the benefits of being taller probably outweigh this one thing. I admit it. Sign me up to Hyperbole Anonymous, please.

This pretty much describes an older gentleman at the 2005 WSOP ME sitting directly to my right. I politely asked the dealer to give the guy a quick lesson in what is allowed because he was talking the cards off the table and leaning back so that no one could see his cards. When the dealer explained that the cards cannot cross the rail of the table into his lap or chest he adjusted by leaning forward (but not down to the table) and bringing the cards directly up in front of his nose to again try and prevent those around him from seeing his cards. It was rather amusing.

Also, remember to slowly check your cards (in whatever method is decided) every time the action is on you.

Make sure to do this slowly, deliberately, and confidently while staring down each of the 9 other people at the table, several of which do not have a hand. It's usually best to check or fold after each time you do this.

Are you left-handed? I put the monster stacks of chips on the left, turn the cards 90-degrees, and peak at the left corner. But I'm right handed (like normal people).

I checked this forum this morning, and ignored this thread, cuz it was only one post, and i figured it would be lame.

This thread actually really impressed me. Nice work guys.

Most of the time I don't even look at my hole cards. I merely pretend to. I just play based upon the reactions of all others at the table looking at their own hole cards.

I'm left-handed but I do the opposite of this. I use my right hand to look at cards and my left hand to bet and riffle chips. But then I eat and write left-handed, while I'm right-handed in sports.

Also, I find I don't need a huge chip stack to hide the cards from the person on my left. Two or three stacks of 20 chips is enough.

You get to look at your cards?

I like to play lefty and eat righty. That way the cards don't get greasy.

I'm left handed as well, although I actually vary which side I keep my chips on. Basically it depends on where at the table I'm sitting since I want to give the dealer a clear shot at me. So if I'm in the 1 or 6 seats chips are on the left, 10 or 4 they're on the right.

I hope you also distribute chips lefty. Otherwise, gross. Hands that touch chips or cards (or anything else in a casino, for that matter) should never touch food.
