How do you determine to stop playing poker for the DAY?

I'm curious how everyone here determines how to end their session of poker. I've had mini sessions as well as marathon session (over 13+ hours, which usually means i'm stuck and chasing)

With online poker, it's so easy to find a game anywhere anytime. So what are some of the reasons you stop playing for the day?

set a goal and a loss limit play within those parameters

but I keep playing if the game is good/and I am playing well even if I go over loss limit or above my goal.

This is really a bad decision to make, You shouldn't make your decision whether to keep playing based on how much you are up or down on the day.

I do understand some people need a loss limit, simply to prevent tilt, but that should be the only reason.

A good idea may be to set a specific # of hands you will get in on the day, or even specific # hours you will play.

However, you should really stop playing when you feel yourself losing focus on the game. There are times that even though I wanted to get in x hands that day, I was so out of focus in the middle of my session, I just quit. I'd rather make 0 money than lose money because I really wasn't paying attention to the action well.

Re: How do you determine to stop playing poker for the DAY?

I've been on the fence about this issue. Whether to stop because you not in the right frame of mind to play. Or stop because I've reach my win goal for the day.

I've had quick sessions, where I win the same amount as a 5+ hour session. Then I have situations where I'm down 4 or 5 buy ins. Then grind it back to even, and i'm just happy to stop playing. I wish it was the reverse, where i'm winning 4 or 5 buyins and stop when its sliding down.

I guess the game is always going to be there. I find myself logging in all the time, wanting play. But stopping myself, because I've won enough for the day, and don't want to have a "bad day".

I would rather having winning sessions everyday (short or long), just as long as I win.

As much as I hate to write this, certain tables you get a better run of cards than others. Luck and streak does come into play. And I hate it when i'm on a losing streak, and I gotta chase to try and break even.

A) I'm not playing my A game
B) I don't want to play any more

Which ever comes first.

Re: How do you determine to stop playing poker for the DAY?

checkit,

I've been playing for many years now and still honestly have the same type of situation as you so your not alone.

Sometimes when I win a bunch in a quick session, I have the urge to stop because nothing is more frustrating than to be way up for the day and then have a bad run and go to bed down.

Like you also said, it's hard for me to quit when down because it's difficult to stop for the day and realize I am down. It sort of makes the day feel like a waste.

This is probably the biggest flaw with my game. Fortunately, I'm usually not real quick to tilt and can usually keep a level head and good play even when down. Maybe it would be just as good to just take a break if you are up or down a certain amount? I'm not so sure it's necessary to completely stop but I have found taking a little break good for the mind to sort of regroup...

I don't know if my winrate would be better if I employed a system but I've always wondered.

Definately try to stop when you feel like you are no longer playing well or the tables are dry regardless of what type of system you decide to use. I think that is probably much more important than continuing to play if who haven't reached some arbitrary goal...

Re: How do you determine to stop playing poker for the DAY?

I usually start any poker session off my losing 1-2 buyins within 1/2 hour, then I get up to +2-3 buyins in the next 2 hours, then I either quit while I'm ahead or just play on until 5 am, get sleepy and unfocused and start cold calling pf 3bets with JTo and lose back down to even. But sometimes I run goot and then something comes up, like sex or dinner or something I can use as an excuse to quit while I'm up. This happens enough to make it worth my time to play.

Re: How do you determine to stop playing poker for the DAY?

I like that line. But does that mean I'm a degenerate if I can't stop at midnight because I'm stuck, and what to get as close to even as possible?

I don't think I would have a problem stopping at midnight if i'm up. The old line use to be play when the tables stops being good at a regular B&M. So you take all that time to go to the card room/vegas, and you don't want to play just a few orbits and stop.

But with Online, its so easy find another game, especially if you're multi-tabling. Finding the point of when enough is enough for the day, is my biggest challenge. Even though I know tomorrow is just another login away, it still pretty rough to find a balance...

yes

being "up" or "down" doesn't matter.

its one big game, just keep good records and look at 'up" and "down" over a longer period of time.

you will do better to play well rested and alert and the bottom line will show it.

playing while compromised, just to try to erase a daily minus is just a bad idea. shut it down and get em tomorrow.
