Here's a portion of the transcript taken from New York Times

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

I didn't think much of McCain, but I liked this.
First, he was 45 years old when AIDS was first recognized. On a personal level, it made no difference to him to know about condoms and HIV.

He was confronted with a question he should know the answer to. He knows he should know since he votes on related issues, but especially since those who came of age afer AIDS arrived will all know. He's missing the round 1 question on a game show. He is a politician, he could have disguised his ignorance with some dodge. Instead, he took the more difficult route and admitted he doesn't know.

I give him full credit for his answer.

This wasn't McCain straight talking. This was him not knowing his canned answer about sex education desugned to pander to the social conservatives but not completely alienate moderates. McCain is just as fake as every other politician.

Correct. He has just made a strong push for acceptance from the religious right and doesn't want to offend. I respect his sacrifice for the country. This pandering I don't respect.

McCain is done. His position on the war will kill him in the general election. That and the fact that he's becoming a slave of his consultants. He's destroying his whole image of the straight talking renegade of the Republican party.

Is anti-contraception a stance of the religious right, or is it a stance of the Catholic church? I've always thought it was a stance just specifically of the Catholic church; anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or to add additional information.

The question was sex education in schools, not contraception in general.
The Religious Right says no information in school about prevention/contraception, just abstinence. Guess they are ok with condoms in the context of a (heterosexual) marriage.

McCain does have one thing going for him, its that historically the Republicans go for the guy who has waited his turn. The guy who's turn it actually is. It happened to Bush Sr. Reagan, and Dole. While Rudy might be the actual front runner for now, McCain is still the perceived front runner and that will help him.

He must know that condoms prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease. He'd have to be unimaginably ignorant not to know that.

He evidently knows he's against it, he just forgot the tactic he uses to make it not sound terrible. He felt he was being painted into a corner and forgot his way out.

I wish politicians would just be freaking honest. lol naiveaments.

I think if he was just a random 45 year old then it would be possible that he simply didn't know about the issue. However he's a an lected politician, he's had to have voted on the issue numerous times meaning one of at least two things

1) He simply didn't want to give an answer because he forgot which answer he had manufactured to appeal to the most people.

2) He actually doesn't know anything about the issue yet still votes on it.

Neither possibility seems admirable to me. I've said it before I'll say it again.
