Small Stakes Hold'em

Reading that book was what turned me into a winning player. After that it was just study and practice: books, these forums, and of course many many many hands of poker.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

Figure out how to break even first. Once you can break even you can play enough (without going broke) to gain a good base of experience. Once you break even you can also experiment with your play (intelligently) to find something that allows you to be a winner.

I think it is basically 2 different ways, either learn how to play (raise AKo UTG, fold JTo UTG etc.) or try to understand the game. The first way is the quickest and can be achieved by reading books etc., but you will also be a losing player if you are at a table with good players who have learned it the second way instead.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

I've gotten some really good advice on this forum and also in some of the books like Sklansky's TOP and others. Practice, thinking about strategy, etc. I'm purely recreational and have just really broke even, but even that is better than others have done, so I guess I'm doing okay. Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

Read sound books
Practice
Read and respond to hand posts in the forum appropriate to your game. IMO, RESPONDING to others hands is the single most effective learning tool available as it forces you to really think through hands.
Start at very, very low stakes and work your way up.

Enjoy.

I'm a loser, guess what, I always tilt. I know what I did is stupid, however, I still manage to do it a million times over and over again...

I guess it's how I'am, I can't accept losing thus move up and go busto

No matter how good or bad you play find a table where the players are worse then you. Stay away from the tables where the players are better then you.

The advice in this thread is awesome.

If you can't become a winning player after this, then you don't deserve to become a winning player.

This is true zoo, and what makes us the best forum on Two.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

The real answer is this:

Pick a game.
Read a book.
Play.
Lose.
Figure out why you lost.
Play again, don't make that mistake.
Repeat the last three until you win.

If you want to play NL Holdem there's some simple advice that can make you a guaranteed marginal winner at low stakes. Don't lose big pots with small pot hands.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

Pick one game and focus on it for several months. Read about it, practice it, and reveiw your play. Accept the fact that you will make stupid mistakes but learn from them and don't beat yourself up. Don't spread your time between all different types of poker - tourney, SNG, NL, stud, etc., or you will never become really good at any one form of poker. Focus.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

I've been a winning player live since i was 16 (im 18 now and graduated when I was 16). But ever since i got my fake id taken away all i have is underground games that go on once or twice a week and online. I can't win for the life of me online. I think its mainly because i go by my reads live and online its just a whole new ballgame. If you want the softest games online I think it would have to be omaha, but its all about learning to adapt. There are so many bad players online that if you put the time and effort into it, it would have to be profitable.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

Read the books everyone else are reading. Not so much to learn better poker, but to know what the book savy player is thinking. You then will be able to predict what their next move will be. Setting up and trapping these book worms is easy. But be prepared to be called everything in the book when you call down a bluff and win.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

I have to admit I'm desperated.
I started playing poker 6 months ago after making a good friend who turned out to be a very successful 1k/2k limit player.
I've read 4 times Small Stakes, once The Theory of Poker and I play al least 6h/day(sometimes a lot more)micro to small limit stakes.
So far I can't even say I'm break even.
Yesterday I bought Poker Traker and PokerAce, but I can't help it being kind of sceptical about it making a big difference.
I really bought into the idea that poker was a skill game, not just luck...but I'm starting to doubt it.
Anyone have other suggestions on becoming a winning player other than the "read and practice" tips?
Thanks.

It is the only way a reglar person can make it. If you are a trust fund baby with unlimited cash, you might get there by trial and error.

Re: How do you become a consistent winning player?

A great point that Barry Greenstein makes in his book, "Ace on the River" is playing well when you are tired or in a bad mood or else don't play at all. I think people are so addicted to poker that they play all the time no matter what their mental state is. The reason Phil Ivey is considered such a great player is because he plays his "A" game almost all the time. Most everyone in this forum has the ability to be an above average player, but few have the mental discipline to play at their best all of the time. So when you feel your game starting to slip, stop and ask yourself if you can refocus and play well or if you need to walk away and come back another day.
