Companies you hate

I tend to hold grudges and won't do business with anyone I feel "wronged by":

Shaws Supermarket: Super overpriced; got to express lane with 10 items, was expecting it to be $13, turned out it was $18 since I didn't have their "rewards card". It is snowing in Mass. today and huge lines behind me. Not going to spend 5 minutes signing up for a stupid card.

Directv/Direcway: Overpaying for exclusive rights to NFL Package and now price for the HD Sunday Ticket is close to $350/year. In 2001 when I started it was $129. Also Indian customer support, overpriced HD/DVR service, weather outages, etc.

Toys R' Us: New very strict return policy, wouldn't exchange an unopened Calliou video that had their stickers plastered all over it. No one saves receipts

AT&T: Changed terms of service after they got me signed up; don't remember a letter; wouldn't refund my $5. Very rude customer service.

FedEx- They never get anything to me on time. It took them 4 weeks to get my copy of HOH from their station that was 45 miles away to my house.

Re: Companies you hate

With you on Shaws. The Warden and I hit Shaws last night. With a storm forecast, the "new" Shaws on Grove St. Worcester had 2 cashiers working at 7:30 p.m. Note that there are about 25 manned checkout lines and a handful of self service checkout stations... So they had 2 registers running (one of which was a 12 itmes or less) on a Thursday night the day before a big storm is to hit. Of course we had too much stuff to use the self checkout.

Also not a fan of Charter Communications. Charter negotiates with the city, so our choices are Charter, DirectTV, or over the air television. The channel lineup stinks, the rates are high, and on days like today with heavy snow I'm sure I'll have fuzzy reception.

Re: Companies you hate

Klompy,

That is literally the first time I have ever heard anyone have a negative experience with FedEx. As in, ever. I've heard occasional gripes about UPS and DHL though.

Earthlink is my home DSL provider and I don't "hate" them (actually, hating an organization is a pretty fruitless endeavor since it doesn't have feelings and can't respond) but they shipped their tech support overseas 1-2 years ago and a few months ago I was having modem problems that were magnified 100X by the fact that the Indians typically couldn't understand what I was talking about, weren't helpful as a result, and wouldn't escalate my call even if I yelled at them - I'm not a dick to CSRs but I would go in circles for literally an hour with some of these people.

I'm positive there is some US-based Earthlink call center for premium or corporate customers or whatever. Wish I had that number.

Yahoo!

they deleted my rocketmail account and all my emails without any warning, and then acted like nothing had happened.

Re: Companies you hate

basically all companies are the same. maybe some are slightly better or worse than others but mostly they are all the same. the truly horrible companies just won't survive. whichever company happens to be the one to screw a guy over is the one he is going to tell everyone is crap.

you always hear the same [censored].. talk about cell service, you hear: OMG TMOBILE SUX, VERIZON SUX, CINGULAR IS HORRIBLE... everyone just says that about the one they had a problem with. what about all the people who had nothing but the best service?

laptops? DELL SUX OMFG GATEWAY IS HORRIBLE, NEVER BUY SONY!!

Re: Companies you hate

Sprint - Awful long distance, awful cell phone service (8 years ago). I understand they've improved as of late, but I refuse to go back to a company that pretty much ignored me every time I had a problem.

Earthlink DSL - Numerous problems, 95% of which were promptly blamed on "BellSouth's phone lines".

Dow/Union Carbide

"Union Carbide, now a Dow chemical company, was responsible for releasing 27 tons of deadly gases in Bhopal in 1984, killing thousands of people and leaving 150,000 severly disabled in what is referred to as the worst industrial disaster on record. Victims continue to suffer from insufficient treatment as Dow refuses to disclose all medical information on the toxic effects of the chemicals released in the incident."

Sad thing, even though I hate this company, I make no effort to avoid products they're involved with because I'm slack.

Re: Companies you hate

Abercrombie & Fitch: their clothing is craptastic. i bought a pair of legwarmers there and they were knit wool, so when the developed a gigantic hole after the first time I wore them, I went back to exchange them. they had the audacity to accuse me of stealing them (I've never stolen anything in my life, excluding one time when I was drunk and took a button that said "i would stop drinking...but then i'd be really thirsty", and the guilt from that wracked me for months). You end up with Old Navy quality at Banana Republic prices.

It's odd though, because I have skirts from their I bought back in high school, so maybe 4 years ago, that are totally fine, but tops disintegrate within a couple wearings.

I also despise their "too cool" marketing tactics...I would be embarassed to work there.

Some of the small mall clothing stores, like Express, where you get accosted by three different salesmen before you've passed the button-down shirts section.

This is an outstanding answer. Plus they wreck the grocery industry by underpaying their non-union, non-benefited employees such crappy wages (which translates to lower prices obv) that it forces the competition out of business or to tighten their belt even further. Can't remember the last time I was in one.

I still use My Yahoo! as my homepage. It does what I want it to do, plus I use their email. I could probably switch to Google/Gmail, but Yahoo! is fine and changing would be a huge hassle.

Re: Companies you hate

Fluff - Many years ago North Face effed me over. I was a poor ski bum and I paid top dollar for a pair of North Face ski pants. Since I was skiing like, you know, EVERY FREAKING DAY I needed a great pair of pants. two days after buying, one of the side zippers blew out. The store said I have to send to North Face. I call North Face and they say no problem. Wash the pants and send them in. So I wash the already clean pants and send them to North Face. North Face sends them back and tells me they are not clean!?!?! what the hell? so I'm like whatever and I wash them AGAIN!!! and send the pants to North Face again. They take forever. I thought they would be bros about the whole thing and just give me a new pair of pants. nope. They "fixed" the zipper. But in so doing they must have taken in the inseam. So when I got my pants back I looked like a disco dancer in my nice tight ski pants. which I wouldn't mind since I'm sexy but it squished my balls when skiing. So for the whole ski year I had to borrow a pair of home made pants from a friend that were yellow and purple and black and red. I looked like clown.

So anyways that's why I hate North Face. Now I only buy from Patagonia. Patagonia is an awesome company that makes awesome products and has awesome customer service.

HH Gregg.

1) Friend of mine bought a Toshiba laptop. He had trouble, took it back (under warranty) to be serviced. They sent it in, came back 2 weeks later, no O/S loaded. He takes it back, they repeat 3 times. I go in with him, they are not helpful. We can't even get a recovery disk. I go home, make some calls, find a salesman my Dad knew when he was at that store, whose Dad was on the board of directors, who is now head of tech support, he got us a recovery disk.

2) My Dad buys a mini fridge from them as a temporary second fridge. He brings it home, and the door falls off when he opens the box. He had to go through a hassle to get it replaced.

I'll never set foot in that store again. These were just two of the instances that lead me to say that.
