My thoughts on last nights Idol..

I thought it was very weak. VERY. Diana Ross night? Christ. The field is already incredibly weak. Toss them a bone here. They have no idea what to do with Diana Ross songs as was proven last night. Give them an R&B night or a Pop night. Something they can work within. I'm sure country night will be next.

Anyway, the only standouts IMO were Melinda, Lekisha and Jordin.

Guys are completey and utterly getting PWNED this season. I thought all of the guys were completely forgetable. At this point it's Melindas or Lakishas to lose.

End of story. [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Re: My thoughts on last nights Idol..

We just have to keep in mind that this isn't a singing competition. A guy will AT LEAST make the top 3. At this point though, I can only see Blake or Sligh pulling that off. With that said, Sligh had a poor performance last night and Blake can't sing.

Best male vocalists right now? It'd have to be Sligh and Phil. This is pretty sad because both are mediocre, and Phil is, at best, inconsistent. Blake can't sing but his "original" style is his edge. Chris R is dropping off of my radar as I don't think he take it to the next level.

We've seen good stuff from Sligh. Despite his crappy performance and apparent ego, he has the stuff to make the top 3 in this weak field if he can win back a decent fan base.

Jordin is a standout for sure, but she worries me. Every week I wonder if it's going to be the week that her youth and inexperience brings her down.

As you said though, it's becoming more and more clear that this is Melinda's or Lakisha's to lose.

I doubt that a male makes the top 3. There is no one good enough. NO ONE. The men are just so terrible and many of them are off key and are not good singers.

But at least the top two women are GREAT. Simply great.

Overall, the top 2 this year are much better than the top 2 last year, but the group of 12 this year as a whole is much weaker than the group of 12 last year.

I think the top singer may be the best contestant ever on idol. I just watched all of her performances on youtube and she is seriously flawless.

I wouldn't be surprised if a guy was not in the top 3. They don't sing well, they don't have much charisma, and they are not versatile.

Sanjaya has the best chance to improve. We've already seen the best from the rest of them.

Re: My thoughts on last nights Idol..

i agree totally on the singing. 2 outstanding women and maybe a couple of good women. all 4 of them being black.

but is there as much entertainment value in the characters this year? i'd say last year that all of the top 7 performers made a buzz and could sell tix to their tour. covais in 11th too, although he didn't sell tix on tour (wasn't on it)...

can you see pre-teen and teenage girls absolutely dying to see anyone from this year's idol??... maybe sanjaya, blake, richardson, but i'd say daughtry, mcphee, pickler, hicks, ace trounce all of them on the popularity front

It would make a good prop bet - Will a male be among the top 3 finalists?

yes, it would (would want favorable odds though as strong consensus would be yes) ... i'm inclined to say no..... there was one year where the last 4 were women. fantasia's year. what year is that? year 3 i think (could be wrong)

I hear ya, LBK. Your thoughts were way too novel and important to fit into that silly ***Official*** thread.

I think it's almost guaranteed that a male will be in the top three, and I can put together a reasonable scenario where two make it.

At some point, I really believe that vote-splitting is going to cost one of LaKisha/Melinda a spot in the top three; easy to see if it's, for example, LaKisha, Melinda, Blake and Chris S. in the final four. Of the remaining women:

- Haley will be out soon and is not a factor;
- Stephanie is very good (last night was an abberation), but won't get past mid-pack at best (say, number 7-9, after the dead money is out) due to Melinda and LaKisha
- Jordin is pretty good (I like Stephanie better) and seems to be getting pimped; the judges' comments were waaaay too favorable for her performance last night. She's not going to improve much this season despite her age - c'mon, she's been performing for most of her life, it's not like she just got handed a mic for the first time last month. I don't think she'll make it past mid-pack either, say 5-7.
- Gina, though not the best singer of the women, is in a unique niche and could make it fairly deep on that basis; no vote-splitting here. Still, when it comes down to her vs. the big two and a couple of guys, she's out - say 5-7, like Jordin. It's possible, though, she could slide into the final three.

It always suprises me to hear that "Sabrina was much better than Stephanie" - I'm a fan (no money on her) - Stephanie not only has a solid voice but is a great performer.

I am afraid she is gone tonight - but even if she sticks around not sure if anyone has noticed... pretty sure she's losing her voice. Sounding somewhat strained and her voice is cracking a bit (this week and last week).

I am not sleeping on this girl anymore (and I thought she had a good vocal last night) - likely Gina LL than Jordin but yeah it is very close.

Ordinarily I'd agree but this year the guys are so lame that I don't see any of them (except Sanjaya maybe, esp if he improves) ever building a big enough fan base to contend. Even if Lakisha/Melinda lose some votes to each other, I don't think there's a guy strong enough to take advantage this year. You need to get more than just the teenage girl vote to win, and I don't see any of them (again, except maybe Sanjaya) appealing to the average idol fan who votes on singing ability.

So you think that the "average idol fan who votes on singing ability" will vote for Sanjaya? He's the worst singer among the guys by a mile.

gina is not a pretty girl. people who think so probably have unattractive girlfriends. which is fine, but wow gina is not bangin' at all. also she has annoying faux-rocker attitude.

haley has a much prettier face, but comes across like a bit of a presumptuous "good-girl" biatch. and she has fattish arms and the body isn't too tight. i would still like to bang her, even though she clearly is terrible in bed.

jordin is cute and seems like she has an actual likeable personality.

antonella was a minx obviously despite having a jersey trashy whore look, probably thinking she was a lot hotter than she actually, and being a dumb [censored].

paula likely has brain damage and i predict a huge breakdown to occur in her life over the next 18 months.

The judges really dropped the ball this year when it comes to the guys and I really hope an explanation is given on how, with many thousands of applicants, they couldn't find THREE guys who can sing decently.

It seems WAAYYYY too much stock was put into the initial auditions. All we saw from Sundance in Hollywood was ass sucking ass and the judges pretty much confirmed his initial audition put him through to the last 24. Ditto for Brandon, I really can't believe the 'bland-ness' and general suckiness started at the same time as the top 24.

I wish the producers would simply frontload the show with the female signers so we don't have to sit through the Chris R's and Blake's of this world to listen to some actual talent.

No I was just saying that Sanjaya has the potential to also get some soccer mom votes cause they feel bad for him. His appeal might be broader than preteens. And he's most likely to sing the songs older voters might like (he has no interest in being "hip" or "current" like the others).

Although judging by last night's results the pity factor isn't working enough for Sanjaya. Which is fine, I'd really like to see all 6 guys go home first. Haley is not very good but I still prefer her to any of the guys.

Part of it is the randomization that goes into the pre-selection process of who gets to audition before SRP. Most of it is that, even in a random sampling of 100,000 people, I would argue it is unlikely that ANY 12 of them are likely to possess star quality. 4-5 TOPS. I mean, think how hard it is to become a celebrity without connections... they don't call it a 1 in a million shot for nothing.

In this case, I'd say it's just random variance that nade it so the few stars turned out to be female. Same thing happened in season 3 I believe, whereas in season 2 the real stars were male.

But I still think there's something to be said that the producers were looking for a female winner from the start, and didn't give a lot of the guys a fair shake. I just don't understand why, if that was the case, they didn't reorganize the semifinal round to make it co-ed. There was a season where they did that and it worked fine. The voter demographics pretty much self-select gender diversity anyway, so it's HIGHLY unlikely you'd ever see a top 12 all of one gender even if it was theoretically possible.
