Boss punched my timecard out, WTF?

I work as an assistant golf professional at a small country club. We still use a traditional time card system where you have to take your card and run it through a machine when coming and going.

I have a fairly unique situation in which I get paid which is fairly common in my industry. I get paid a base salary regardless of the hours I work in a week. Any hours over 40 in a week, I am paid 1/2 time for. The 1/2 time wage is simply 1/2 of what my hourly wage would be according to my base salary and a 40 hour week. It's not much, maybe $6 dollars an hour or so, but it usually adds up to around $2500 per year because of some of the busy months.

I have been at this position for 2 years, and was told by my boss that I'm allowed to stay on the clock to play and practice golf so long as I was scheduled to be there that day. This also is very industry standard. For the previous 2 years, there has never been an issue made about this until yesterday.

After my shift, I played for about 3 hours. When I returned to the clubhouse to time out, I noticed my time card was stamped already for shortly after my "shift" ended a few hours prior. I was already over the 40 hour mark for the week, so a small amount of money was "taken" from me.

I called our general manager (not my direct boss) to ask him if he did it, and he said "yes." I tried to explain to him that he can't do that, but my argument was dismissed fairly quickly. I contacted my boss, who was very upset about it, and said that he would take care of it on Tuesday(tomorrow). We are closed today.

For the record, the general manager is the extreme version of a micro-manager. I'm sure many of you know the type. What it do? Do I have any options outside of just "letting my boss handle it" or quitting?

Re: Boss punched my timecard out, WTF?

I def wouldn't quit over $18. Boss said he'd handle it, let him.

BTW sweet gig. Being paid to golf. Nice.

you were done with your shift, and played a *free* round of golf, but are complaining because you weren't paid for it?

Read the OP, it's a pretty standard arrangement apparently.

What are you asking for? Your boss already is going to handle it. What else could you possibly expect in terms of advice?

I think you should just quit or at least stop being a whiney little b!tch.

Re: Boss punched my timecard out, WTF?

You're allowed to play during your shift and are paid for it. Your shift ended, but you were still playing. The GM punched you out when your shift ended, because you were not working but rather playing, thus not entitling you to 1/2 time. How is this not standard on his part?

Let your boss handle it. That's why he is the boss. Now go back to working on your Freddie Couples power fade.

Pretty much the same deal as me, I'm the assistant of an assistant and I get played to play at long as I play right after my shift ends... Pretty standard in the golf industry.

wow, for any hours OVER 40 in a week i'd expect *double* pay, not half pay. How does overtime = half pay?

OP, let your boss attempt to square it pre-hissy fit. As others said, it's $18. Don't let it happen again, but you could always let it go if you know it won't.

Seriously... at least let your boss do his part before you get too worked up about it.

Re: Boss punched my timecard out, WTF?

I'd be a little concerned that anyone would punch my timecard without me knowing. Since it was your boss's boss, you did the right thing and went to your boss. Let him talk it over, as he said he would do. You have done what you can.

Golf "pros" around here teach golf, run the club, or otherwise provide a service. They don't just get paid to play.

If you were a lawyer, and had to do research for a case, would you expect to get paid for the time you took to get the research done?

Re: Boss punched my timecard out, WTF?

If you get paid a salary based on your 40 hour work week regardless of how many hours you work, the obvious answer here is to work three hours less the next week. If the company screws you out of time, you screw them out of time.

Also, what is with the overtime pay being at half rate? Since some employees get paid to play, does this cut down on employees logging in major hours just for casual playing?

I agree, this seems very nitty to me because you have it made. Who cares about 18 bucks when you just played a round of golf for free. I worked at a golf shop when I was a senior in high school and this type of thing wasnt allowed so consider yourself lucky if you have been getting it for 2 years now w/o any trouble.

Let your boss handle it, don't say another WORD to the gm. If you are like most asst. pros, you work ridiculously long hours for ridiculously little money mostly to the benefit of the head pro (your boss). Let him do what it takes to make it right.

As others have said, just let your boss handle it. I wouldn't quit over this single occurance. I just hope it isn't going to become standard.

Out of curiousity, who is higher up on the boss chain, the general manager or your direct boss?

Golfing is a job for the OP. The fact that he may or may not be having fun while doing it is irrelevant.

Balancing a check book is not a skill that needs to be honed. It is in your best interest to keep you checkbook balanced. It is in the best interest of the golf course to have a competent and skilled pro to bring in revenue.
