Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
We've all heard Mr. Matusow constantly berate others, talk up a storm, and/or try to coach others on becoming a better player, etc....Given that he's a constant loser (live and online), do others in the poker community really respect his game or comments/advice?
I've seen him get really unlucky online (like almost every day), but have also seen him play poorly too. Game-wise, I don't think he's that great. But of all the guys out there, he seems to blame it on bad luck the most. On top of that, he loves to coach "newer or lesser" players all the time. Do people respect his game/advice? -TheMan |
Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?

Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
I respect his tournament game. I think his results say enough...
|
Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
How about the fact that his tournament results are better than you could ever dream for, or 95% of the people on this forum for that matter. But no, lets all jump on the I-HATE-MATUSOW-FLAME-BOAT. Sigh.

Sigh. [/ QUOTE ] Mrs. Matusow, we're sorry that your son doesn't get the respect that you think your son deserves. The fact is that your son was paid by the other players to stay in the high stakes game (because they correctly assumed there was a good chance he would give all of his money back. Negreanu and other players drool when they see him coming to the table. Is the OP's question a bit silly? Certainly. Does Matusow have more knowledge than the game than the OP (or me)? Probably, if not definitely. Does that forfeit our right to criticze him? Of course not. |
Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
I have played with Mike and he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Unlike some of the other poker 'celebrities' that were there, Mike took time to chat with us little guys, wasn't completely self-obsessed, and didn't pull any celebrity strops. He even offered some genuinely good advice (although I think he would be out of his depth discussing strategy here at 2+2). I think as a poker player he is inconsistent, ranging from terrible to excellent, depending on his mood and the day.

I have seen him played very well online.

This thread already sucks.

Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
Mike Matusow is what all the pros say he is. Either really bad or really good. We have all seen it both ways. So when he is on, yes. His tournament results show he is a very consistant.

If you are in any way affiliated with him, then you must realize that you're going to be bashed by someone at some time, whether correct or not. Get over it. Some people will even bash Doyle. Everyone gets bashed. OTOH, all people make bad plays periodically, even Doyle and Ivey, so criticism sometimes is valid. If you aren't related to MM, then why do you care what some random person on the internet says? As for the OP's topic, yes I respect MM's game, as all should. Does he have gaps? Sure. Does he seem tilt easily? From what I've seen, yes. Is he as fundamentally sound as other top pros? Probably not, but I'm not qualified to judge. He's fun to watch though. |

Yeah I am gonna get banned for arguing with someone who joined last week, you are the only person I have gotten in a legit argument with cause I think you are a douchebag who is just asking for trouble tyring to act like a knowitall when you probably started playing poker 2 weeks ago. Enough said and I wont reply to anything you say anymore to avoid "being banned" for bad behaviour.

well if you want to disagree with me try to say why and how, using reason and logic, not name calling, it might help your credibility. This was uncalled for.

Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
well, i don't know....i've always heard MM was one of the truly nicest guys around, despite the table persona - so won't dispute that.
but his game...man...everytime i watch him play online, it's tough to watch. he gets into fights with ppl non-stop and then blows off his whole stack night after night (well this was like 2 months ago or so...so it might have just been a bad run then). his style of play is also so weird to me. he's tight, but then takes super risky moves by continuation bluffing all-in and losing the pot to like the nuts all the time. my original question i guess was how the other pros see him (as a good player...bad player...etc....and whether he's respected despite the table talk). -TheMan |

Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?

I think he'd be great as a commentator [/ QUOTE ] Mike did this series of videos with him, Todd Brunson and Dave Sklansky. They were in a sound proof booth watching a table of amatures play, hole cams and everything. Mike naturally fell into the role of commentator, narrating the action and predicting who was going to raise, who was going to fold, etc. Naturally, since this was a table full of donks & amatures, nobody did what Mike thought they would do. Dave would then berate Mike for recommending a particular play when clearly (so far as Dave Sklansky was concerned) a differant play was correct. And then, it would START. "That's not right." "Of course it is." "No one would play it that way." "Well, the math says..." "No one at THAT table is thinking about the math!!!" I kept waiting for John Belushi to run in from off camera and yell "FOOD FIGHT!!!!!" All the while, Todd Brunson just sat there. Didn't speak, didn't move, didn't even flinch. So I totally agree. So long as they keep Dave Sklansky out of the room, Mike makes an excelent poker commentator. WAY better than Gabe Kaplan. |

check his online numbers again... [/ QUOTE ] In probability theory and statistics, the variance of a random variable (or somewhat more precisely, of a probability distribution) is a measure of its statistical dispersion, indicating how its possible values are spread around the expected value. |
Re: Does Anyone Really Respect Mike Matusow\'s Talk/Advice/Game?
Mike is a very nice guy. He has good advice regarding variance and downswings (believe it or not). He is a good hand reader. He does have a lot of leaks though, and he lacks self control.
He's +EV in most of the HSP episodes I've seen him on. |

Mike himself openly admits to losing and often steaming off even more money online (close to millions). He gets by from having strong financial backers in the poker community. Do you remember after his WSOP ME final table finish and TOC win (2005? I think) that Mikey was saying he won just enough to pay off his debt to backers? Well, that's a good indication of just how much he was down. I admit, though, he takes sick beats online when I watched him play reguarly about 3 months ago. -TheMan |

Who are all of these backers that you say are willing to throw away good money by staking a supposedly known loser? People with enough money to give millions to Matusaw aren't stupid, and wouldn't give him the money if he was such a known loser and terrible player. It just doesn't make sense. Every consider that Matusaw's "woe is me" whinging is just part of his persona/act? Do you believe everything a poker player says at the table? No, me neither. So why to do take these statements as fact? You can watch him play online, but that small sample is hardly an indication of his success or failure. |
