restaurants unique to your college town
I feel like every college town has some unique restaurants famous amongst their area.
Let's hear a top 3 or top 5, what the restaurant is, what it serves and why it's special. University of Maryland - 1) Danny's - claims world's greatest hamburger. while this is incorrect, they do have amazing drunk/late-night food, most notably their cheesy fries. 2) Ratsie's - best pizza/hot wings in town. kinda expensive, but a must-visit for anybody hungry after the bars. definitely the best pizza and most delicious wings in college park. 3) Cluck-U - chicken joint specializing in fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, etc. also stars local rap celebrity "Cluck-U Pac," who has music videos online. note that this thread does not want to hear about chain restaurants such as papa johns, coldstone creamery, etc. only list what your college is unique for. |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Western Illinois University
The International Sandwich Shop AKA ISS. This is the best sub place I have ever been to. I go there about 3 times a week. The best bread I have ever had. I go there so often the people who work there know what I am going to order when I walk in. The only problem is the guy who owns the place is a complete tool. One example of his toolishness if you order a sub that comes with provolone and you want american cheese it will cost a dollar to change. WTF? |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town

University of Illinois
La Bamba- greatest drunk burritos and super nachos ever, open late- burritos as big as your head Bonnie Jeans- 2 big slices of pizza for $4. above a bar and only way to get there is by going up a single stairwell where the top is just the counter and where they make the pizzas'. excellent cuz its so greasy and cheesy when drunk |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town

Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Washburn University
1. The Pad- Locally owned joint that got big enough to open two stores. Famous for its butter burgers and salad bar! 2. Seabrook Tavern-Know for its 64 oz. burger...eat it and the meal is free! 3. Bobo's-Popular drive in burger joint...cheap food that tastes good! 4. Porubsky's Deli-Know for its hot pickles(unbearable) and award winning chili! Owners are of Russian descent and got an area of town nicknamed "little Russia." 5. Prize Package- legendary burgers...only open a few hours a day and packed the entire time! |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
bump to add some from my hometown of Charlottesville, Va. (home of University of Virginia)
Bodo's - very popular bagel place that has three different stores around town. friendly atmosphere, great bagels, very cheap. great place to take visitors. Littlejohn's - 24/7 sandwich shop that makes big sandwiches for cheap. nice and sloppy, my favorite is the cheesesteak and the Wild Turkey sandwich. |

University of Illinois La Bamba- greatest drunk burritos and super nachos ever, open late- burritos as big as your head [/ QUOTE ] We have one of these at Illinois State as well. It is not nearly as popular as the one at UIUC though. I assume it is because of location (the one at uiuc is on west side of Green St. isn't it?). I honestly don't know what ISU has that is ONLY at ISU. I will throw out a couple that could be unique or could be everywhere, just ones I hadn't heard of before.... Emach and Boilo's (sp) - I am pretty sure this is super popular and everywhere, but I'm mentioning it becuase I'd never heard of it, and they have a guitar painted on the building. I was in shock at how awesome that was. Brewha's Bar - This is some hole in the wall sort of bar. It isn't very big. What makes it awesome though is $2 burger baskets. A delicious burger loaded with lettuce, tomato, etc and a side of fries for $2 after tax. Okay that is all I can think of and I bet both are popular. So apologies to OP but I tried my best. |

Good times. Is UPac back at Cluck-U? I thought he quit and started working at Santa Fe a few years ago when Cluck-U got a new owner. |

Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Princeton
Hoagie Haven: greasy, delicious sandwiches. cheesesteaks, chicken parm, gyros, etc. One favoritee of mine is the "fat lady": a cheesesteak with fries, mozzarella sticks, and hot sauce. |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
North Texas:
Mr. Chopsticks: Mmmmm.Mmmmm. Chinese The Tomato: Mmmmmm. Mmmmmm. Pizza more to come later. i'm hungry now. |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Mizzou
Shakespeare's Pizza - by far the best pizza I've ever had and some of the weirdest people I've ever seen work there. They did a little bit on Shakespeare's when we played Oklahoma at home last season Booche's - $1 a burger, they are a little bigger than the size of your fist, people go in and get 10 of them, great hangover food (imagine white castle x20) Beat: it isn't open late The Diner - Only open from 11 pm - 6 am and only on the weekends so it is pretty obvious who their target market is. My favorite is "the stretch" It has chili, eggs, onions, peppers, cheese and a bunch of other random stuff I can't remember. It hurts in the morning. CJ's Hot Wings - homemade sauces (the best of which is BYFO, burn your face off) and the biggest chicken wings I have ever eaten. There is more meat on one of their wings than 3 BWW wings |

Lots of locations. At Arizona State when I was there, Long Wong's was legendary. Best wings ever and spawned bands such as the Gin Blossoms. I believe it was torn down and taken over by a new owner and now probably sucks. |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
PSU has its own creamery, where they sell the ice cream that is made on campus. Though I don't know if it constitutes a restaurant.

Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Naval Academy AKA Annapolis (btw i don't attend Navy, but i grew up in Annapolis)
1. Chick and Ruths--Famous diner, in downtown Annapolis, used to be open 24 hours. Great Milkshakes. 2. Sammy's Deli--Sandwhich shop used to be located in the "Market house" now closer to the Naval Academy, Great sandwiches. |

Uh good stuff thats just here... (univ. of south carolina that is) Tereyaki (or however u spell it) Grill - Really small japanese place, very good food and really big portions for cheap, open till 3am. Beezers - not exclusive to here but not that big a chain either. Really good sub place open till 3am all week long, They also deliver and nice big subs and also cheaply priced. Pops pizza - NY style pizza, very good obv open late. That's all i can just think of off the top of my head EDIT: alot of the places listed by people in the thread are not common chain places (some i listed are too but we're not that special food wise) |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Amherst College...
Antonio's - pizzaria with a bunch of different toppings (like barbeque chicken with blue cheese, honey mustard chicken). Always packed after the bars close with lines out the door. The Hangar - A franchise known as Wings Over started in this location, but the Hanger is the original location, so I think this counts for the thread. They have the most ridiculously delicious and bad for you "boneless chicken wings", which are just chicken tenders fried to perfection and coated in whatever sauce you might think of. Best food to eat when drunk and you can have the leftovers for the morning after |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Not my school, but the best sandwich I ever had was right across the street from the University of Arizona. It's called Cheba-Hut. Every sandwich is named after weed. The workers wear hippie tie-dyed clothes. Bob Marley is played, pictures of celebrities toking are everywhere. I think I had 3 sandwiches within 24 hours from that place, and every time I make my own... I just dream of Cheba-Hut.

Re: restaurants unique to your college town
you guys are right, cluck-u is a mini-chain. i dunno why i don't think of it like that, but there are a handful of chains around.

It was going to be the place I listed too. CC, don't worry about Ray (owner). He's always been like that. I lived in the brick house next to ISS (talk about convenience) during my time there. We got to know him well. Any way to make a buck, and he'll do it. He's not as bad as you'd think though. |
Re: restaurants unique to your college town
Ohio University
Courtside Pizza - Best pizza in town also serving delicious subs and sides. D.P. Dough - I know its not unique to OU but there are less than 20, and it can't be overlooked for a great food down here. Delivers a huge variety of delicious calzones til 4am. Souvlaki's - Awesome greek fast food joint open late night to satisfy those beer munchies. Everything and i mean EVERYTHING is fried. O'Bettys - Another great late night snack place. Best chili dogs/smothered fries in town. Big Mamma's Burritos - In a town without the luxury of a Chipotle we have to deal with what we have. I'm not complaining. They offer a good variety of burritos with a different taste compared to Chipotle. |
