1000 Push ups per day

I have a friend who claims he used to do 1000 push ups a day. He is quite strong for his size, but I felt like he was exaggerating. I called him out on it and he defended his position. I still don't believe him. What do you guys think? Do you know of anyone who can or does a 1000 push ups a day? Is it even possible for an average person aka not a body builder or fitness freak. Even people in jail don't do that many push ups.

Love that last line. I'm pretty sure I could do this in a day.

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

I think it's doable. At one point I was doing 400-500 (total in a day) and I was a pussy.

the navy seal training has 400 push ups a day.

I know lots of people that could probably do it. I don't think I know anyone that actually would though.

so, so easy if I wanted to.

Just do 50 or even 25 at a time, it would be super easy.

i use to do 400 pushups and 500 situps a day in about 25 minutes. 1000 would be no problem.

So you're saying that you weigh 140.

1000 seems like a ton. When I was a tot I used to sleep on my uncle's back while he would do push ups all morning, I guess the motion put me to sleep or something. My uncle was really into martial arts and he said that he would do 500 (he never said he did 1000), the thing is is that I don't remember him stopping, they were continuous.

A lot depends how strict or loose your form is, much like pull ups.

in a 24 hour period this would be v. easy. if your form is perfect it'd be harder but still very doable, b/c if your form is perfect you're probably in pretty good shape already.

also, anybody ever do a push up burnout? try it, its fun.

If you do ladders, this can be done pretty easily.

Jack LaLanne's Feats

#
# 1956 (age 42): Jack set a world record of 1,033 push ups in 23 minutes on You Asked for It, a television program with Art Baker. He later celebrated by inventing a new fitness regime which would train all parts of the body at one time, calling it the star jump.

Fool,

how long did your friend claim to have kept up this regiment? week? month? year?

I'm sure it is possible to do 1000 PUs per day for a long period; however it would require a very disciplined person -- does your friend seem disciplined enough to have pulled this off?

Or does "used to" mean he did it three times one week a year ago.

Doing 1000 pushups in one day has nothing to do with strength. It's all endurance.

That said, I could probably do 1,000 in one day if I "had" to. It's definitely possible... but do "1,000 pushups a day," as in, "every day" = your friend is full of [censored].

Funny how he "used" to do 1,000 pushups a day. Kind of like my friend who "used" to bench 265lbs for reps.

um, its really not that hard to do 1000 pushups in a day everyday if you build up to it. i mean, as long as you dont weigh less than 100 pounds or more than 200

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

very possible. i used to do 1500 every other day before i snapped my clavical (not due to pushups)

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

I doubt someone cold, as in not normally working out, could do this. They would be so stiff and sore after ~100 and pretty much be kicked for the day. It would be a struggle to keep up any kind of pace in reps at that point. I guess it's mind over matter though so it might be possible.

Someone who works out somewhat regularly though shouldn't have a problem doing this. Spaced out in sets across the day, this would be pretty easy.

why would anyone do 1000 or 1500 pushups in a day or every 2nd day? what the hell?

I wouldn't call him a liar. You make it sound like it isn't possible. It's far from impossible. Depending on how you break down your sets, this is a breeze for a lot of people.

Check out Herschel Walker's wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herschel_Walker

"Walker stated in a phone interview on The Jim Rome Show on November 20, 2006 that he still performs 2500 situps and 1500 pushups every morning. He has been going through this same routine every morning since high school."

Ok, I feel like failing a challenge. About myself, 27 male. 6'1" 165. Not very strong. I don't know my max bench, but it's not very much (maybe 120 or so). I'll give this a try on Saturday or maybe tomorrow. 1000/16 = ~60 an hour.

You know, how much strength & endurance does it take to do 1 pushup? Not much at all really. If you had the dedication to do 1 pushup every minute for 16.7 hours, I think anyone could really do this then.

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

ok, but realistically that's not how I'm going to do it. Probably try for 10 sessions doing 4 sets of 25 (depending how it goes). No out of shape person could do 1000 in a session. What is it? some kind of acid build up or something like that occurs.

Edit: Ok, no way I'm completing this challenge. 15 push ups has me feeling it. lol

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

Do ladders. Let's say as an example your max is 25. Do something like sets of 10, 12, 14, 16, 14, 12, 10 with one or two minutes rest in between. Whatever you do, don't work to exhaustion in any of your sets. The example I gave is 88 pushups in 15-20 minutes.

Ridiculous.

If you did 400 pushups and it took you 2 seconds a piece for all 400 and 500 situps @ 2 seconds a piece for all 500 situps it would take you 30 minutes.

exaggerate? It actually only takes me roughly 15 seconds to do 20 pushups. and about 40 seconds to do the 25 situps. My workout (this portion of it) consisted of 10 continuous sets of 20 pushups/25 situps, then about a 2 minute rest, then 10 more continuous sets. Adding time to spin around and switch between pushup and situp form makes it about 25 minutes.

another point of measure, my first set for tabata pushups, i did roughly 45 pushups.

Re: 1000 Push ups per day

I think this is totally possible. In high school when I was doing water polo, I could do 100 pushups (yes, real pushups, not the wussy ones with poor form) AFTER doing circuit training for an hour. Those 100 took me a few minutes (I'd just do them straight until exhaustion). I'm sure that with proper sets and reps, and because I wouldn't be so tired from having just done weight lifting, I could have done 1000 in a day back then. Just do 100 really quickly like once an hour.

1000/day is possible, just not likely. My friend would routinely do several hundred per day along with the rest of his strength training, and if he just substituted pushups for all of his other workouts, I'm sure he could do it.
