Wisdom teeth question

Last year at the dentists I had an appointment set up to get them removed but ended up canceling it due to something coming up, at this point they are through the skin and seem to be in position fine..

the dentists tells me I need to get them removed, I want to believe him but I also had dentist tell me I needed braces when my teeth were straight and they still are, so I have become suspicious if they are telling me what is best for their pockets(probably stupid).. anyways I have discussed with quite a few people I know and work with that kept theirs in, I have had no pains at all with them and everyone else is telling me there is no reason to take them out if they aren't bothering me..

I'm 20, I tell the dentists I am thinking about keeping them and he says I would probably be alright for 10-15 years then get some mouth disease and have to get them removed which would be more painful then.. again, not sure if it is just to get me to get it done through them asap.. I also plan on getting a second opinion from another dentist but would like to know if anyone else has any thoughts..

tl;dr cliff notes: i'm 20, wisdom teeth are basically in, no pains, dentists says take out, everyone else says leave in, looking for opinions..

what are you so afraid of? Just get them taken out. it'll save you the hassle in the future.

I didn't see any reason to get them removed if I don't need to.. I don't have a problem doing it if I have to

Every few months mine hurt like a mutha, but then the pain goes away after a day or two. My teeth havent moved and still are in the same space. If i knew letting them move meant later on my teeth would be f'd i would get them removed but im not sure thats always the case.

Just get them taken out. You're just looking for an excuse to be cheap. I really doubt this dentist has nothing better to do that unnecessarily taking out people's wisdom teeth. Most docs/dentists have fully booked schedules and don't need to schedule unnecessary treatments.

you haven't met a bad dentist yet sir...

i would get them taken out though, cause the cost of fixing your crumpling teeth would cost more than the surgery to take them out

i currently have a retainer on my bottom teeth and took about 3 months to fix cause wisdom teeth crumbled the front ones

thanks dc, were you in the same situation as me, that you thought you would be alright if you left them in?

I waited too long with my, and a couple of my front teeth slowly got crowded. It'll probably cost a lot if I ever get them straightened.

What does this mean? Your teeth actually broke apart due to the pressure?

OP,

I had mine taken out because they were causing me pain every few weeks or so. fwiw if my dentist had told me to get them out (even if I had no pain) to avoid problems later, I would of got them removed.

just read this

and it isn't making my decision any easier.. it makes me feel like I should keep them.. I will probably just have another dentist xray me to see if my mouth is big enough

Re: Wisdom teeth question

You should go see an oral and maxiofacial surgeon.

wisdom teeth removal is kind of like preventative surgery. you're better off getting them out now when they're not a problem and when you're young. it's not a big deal.

Re: Wisdom teeth question

If you got the wisdom teeth surgery right now, it wouldn't really hurt much at all. However, if you wait till they become a problem, it'll be hurt like a mother. So, if you're going to have to get them removed eventually anyways, might as well do it when it won't hurt, and then won't need to worry about them.

Re: Wisdom teeth question

My dentist gave me the same advice in a very similar situation about my wisdom teeth (age 22). I know him personally and he isn't trying to make an extra buck (as he would just refer me to an oral surgeon anyway).

Options:

1. Take them out now.

2. Take your chances and down the road when you have problems and pain have them taken out.

Re: Wisdom teeth question

If you're unsure you should get the second opinion. If you have them taken out INSIST on some industrial strength pain killers. The first set I had taken out the dentist gave me super-aspirin. Oh, was that bad! Second set he said it was ok for me to take some of my fathers' leftover kidney stone morphine pills. Much better. You won't get those but INSIST on something strong.

Re: Wisdom teeth question

Follow up: I had them removed this morning.. They were all coming in straight so they apparently came out very well(I was out for the procedure).. He was done in half an hour.. I came home and slept for a while and now I feel basically 100% except the fact that my lip/tounge are still a little numb.. There is slight pain on the bottom two but nothing bad at all.. It went much better than I imagined and I am glad I went through with it when I did. I am going to see Oceans 13 tonight and golfing tomorrow.. Thanks for everyones advice/thoughts when I originally asked this..

Re: Wisdom teeth question

Good choice on getting them out. It's a harmless procedure and people make it out to be way worse than it is. I've never seen a case where all four were pulled out and were all straight and intact, though... usually they have to break one or two.

Fedfan691 06-08-2007 04:07 PM

Re: Wisdom teeth question

I had all four of mine out and it went even easier than the op's. It literally took him less than two minutes to pull all four teeth out once he novocaine and laughing gas had been administered, and I didn't feel a thing.

Re: Wisdom teeth question

I'm actually not sure how long he actually spent.. He had told me before hand it would take him 30 min.. I don't remember anything other than them putting the oxygen in my nose, a shot and the arm and then waking up in the room to come down from the drugs ..

I had heard a bunch of bad stories like you had mentioned about dry sockets and such so I expected it to be worse.. I will now recommend the surgery to anyone that asks..

It's pretty likely that I'll get mine taken out before I graduate from college. I don't think I'll need them, but after college I will temporarily not have any health/dental insurance to work with.

get them taken out, its not that bad, id suggest talking to other people who have gottent them taken out. Some doctors are better at the surgery then others so try to get a recomedation. Id suggest bringing in a great CD and listening to a favorite song while getting laughing gas option. It will be great until u realize taht the liquid taht is spattering everywhere isnt water, but blood. Ice cream and vicodin for a week after

Its actually a lot of saliva mixed witha little bit of blood. One time assisting a thirds surgery the handpiece got caught in the gauze that was sheilding stuff from falling down the patients throught which then started spinning at thousands of rpms and was soaked in blood/saliva mix. There was a loud pop and me and the Oral surgeon were soaked in blood.

He was like "somebody get a camera!, if i walk out into the halls, theyd think i shot someone." He then tried to walk off but forgot he was attached by a headlight to a stationary unit and almost succeeded in knocking over the unit and the instrument tray everywhere. Thank god for face shields, hair nets and full body gowns, ruined my shoes and scrub pants though.
