I'm not really proposing that Jimi is simply the best guitarist. Let us discuss the whole package that is Jimi, not just the guitar portion.

Jimmy Page was great, nobody will argue that. But when you look at the total package(song writing, vocal power, and guitars, not to mention soul) its hard for me to see Page in the same light as Jimi Hendrix. Can u dig what I am saying?

I can definitely dig that. As a complete package it would be hard for me to argue that Page is better than Hendrix. But as a guitarist, Hendrix can't even touch Page. Watch the Led Zeppelin DVD set that came out a few years ago.

Think about how one might know that Jimmy Page thought Hendrix was a better player. Think really hard. I'm sure you're smart enough to figure it out.

It's really tough to name the greatest, because personal taste will nudge you one way or another, but three of those guys specifically stated that Jimi was the greatest. Clapton even said something to the effect of: "He's not even on the next level, he's in a completely different building"

Re: Is there even a close second to Jimi Hendrix?

From a technical standpoint, there are quite a few better than Jimi. Just about any of the prog rock types or "guitar hero" types can make this claim. Hell, two of the guitarists I've played with in live bands can make this claim.

From a soul standpoint, no one better comes to mind. Stevie Ray Vaughan comes fairly close, but he's no Jimi, either.

never saw hendrix live obviously lol

FWIW I'd still take Hendrix #1 in my fantasy guitarist league

In all these types of threads, in this same discussion time after time...I'm always really disappointed by the lack of love that Duane Allman receives...

Rolling Stone recently did a top 100 of all time. Allman was #2 (after Jimi). Personally, I like Allman even better, but there's no denying Jimi's talent. The fact that he's not even been mentioned in this thread though is really unfortunate.

asofel,

I'm not familiar with Duane, but isn't he like far and away the best slide guy of all time, but lesser at "regular" guitar.

Not arguing, just going off a very minimal knowledge.

Re: Is there even a close second to Jimi Hendrix?

Hendrix was definitely the best IMO. The Clapton quote about him being in 'another building' is right on, he was in a league of his own. I guess you could name a bunch of guys who were a close second. SRV, was definitely a great guitarist but he was pretty much just a great blues guitarist, and there are lots of guys who can play as well or nearly as well technically, etc. Hendrix, while definitely rooted in the blues had a much wider range and could just take the guitar to so many more places. There's just some intangible quality he had that's indescribable.
In one of the biographies I read about him It said that he was just learning to read music and was planning on playing/recording with guys like Miles Davis. I can't even imagine where he would've went musically but he was definitely still growing and evolving as a musician when he died. Somebody like SRV I believe would've remained essentially a great blues guitarist but not really straying too far from that mold.

I think Hendrix wins, but I did think EVH was really original. More than technique, just the phrasing and attitude to his playing.

I just had him listed in a group of people not mentioned then erased the sentence. Guy was amazing. I think he's way underrated/overlooked in these threads as well. He did lots of great session work. Check out the Wilson Pickett version of 'Hey Jude' with Duane on guitar, it's awesome.

FWIW I agree with Rolling Stone with him in the #2 spot.

Re: Is there even a close second to Jimi Hendrix?

i think there are 2 catogries guitarist are put into. Talent & writting ability.

I think Page played better and wrote based on his ability.
Hendrix was a better writer/preformer

personally i like page better.

There was this old man i was in the military with, he had seen both. Saw Led Zep many (atleast 4) times, and saw them before they got really big. When i asked him what the worst concert was he ever went to he said it was Led Zep.

And i think if you play the guitar for a year and you start to play hendrix songs, you will appericate page more and realize hes the better one...atleast i did. However seeing the vidoes of hendrix preform it defintly would have been a better show

my 2 cents
