Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

I've been kicking around this idea of a heads-up league. The way I envision it; I'd like to get at least 20 people and we'd have a specific night of the week where we meet up at private HU tournments at stars for a minimal buy-in... I would divide the participants of the league into divisions and generate an 8 week schedule where you play a 3 game series against a different opponent each week.... at the end of the 8 weeks, a certain number of players would qualify for a league championship tournament...

This seems like it would be a fun way to find out who the best players are in the forum, and sharpen our skills, I've been the commissioner of a fantasy football league for 6 years, so I envision running this league in a similar fasion, we'd have a website dedicated to the league where we could see results, hand histories, and talk smack in a league forum....

Would anybody be interested in anything like this? Let me know... if there's enough interest I may just get the ball rolling.

Awesome idea. I'd like to see this happen. Only request from my end would be that "playoff" series are at least 5 games, 7 being even better. Now that I think about it, if you compare HU to pro sports leagues, the win percentage distribution over say 82 or 162 HU matches is probably pretty similar to that of a pro sports league.

Anyone have experience playing a long series of HU matches vs. 1 opponent?

i'd play too

edit: maybe we should also say that HHs should then be submitted to the forum.

I would join in, only 'maybe' I see is the time schedule differeces between Europe and U.S., so maybe you should let the players themselves choose the times of play. Evening hours in U.S. is like 3am+ in Europe. Goldmund

I doubt people would put that much time into it. I might be interested, depends on number of matches and at what time the matches are being played.

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

Couldn't we basically just agree to a time within a set amount of days (say between Tuesday and Thursday), giving us the weekend to review HH from the matches and talk about them, then set up our time slots again on Monday and repeat.

There's no reason for this to be complicated, and frede I don't think a lot of time really needs to be put into this to make it fun and educational.

Count me in, let me know if you need any help setting this up. I've run a few fantasy leagues and a few other things in my time.

i'd be satisfied with a semiregular hu tourney on stars. weekly, biweekly or whatever. if no one else does this i may take it on myself.

I am in. But we need at least 16 better 20 people.

I'd be interested in this. What is meant by "minimal buyin"?

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

I emailed Stars to see if there way a way to set up seeding based matchups in case we do a final tourney at the end of this league and got a huge reply basically summed up by this: "You are now eligible to start host your own tourneys, these are the rules" and did not get my original question answered in any way, shape or form.

Also, if someone is in the midst of setting this up, don't make the selections final, I have two people that would like to join this as well as myself, so don't make any finalized list or whatever. Thanks.

PM the MTT mod Jurollo, he works with PS and can easily get this set up

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

It would be much easier to play matches w/o a set schedule but instead a weekly mandate where everyone just reports their match whenever its done and it gets recorded w/ no Stars intervention.

ChicagoRy 03-05-2007 11:39 PM

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

^

I mean for a tourney at the end of the regular "season" or whatever where there would exist pairings (much like NCAA March Madness).

But yea, there's no need for individual two man HU tourneys setup for each match, just play it out, and the site doesn't even really matter (though everyone would need to have money on at least the same site, PS, but could have the option to have it played on another site, pending both players agree).

APXG, I would prefer to have a 3-4 day window in which these matches are played each week, it would be a lot easier for the people who are going to run this and for people to setup match times for the following week.

So lots of people are interested but nobody wants to organize it?

ChicagoRy 03-07-2007 06:11 AM

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

I figure we could use 2-3 people to organize it. I'll volunteer to be one of them. Anyone else in? Artmonk, it was your idea originally, omfgnoway also mentioned he might be interested in leading this thing. Others?

I think the consensus is a match a week for 10-16 weeks and then a seeding-based tourney at the end of this thing.

Are we doing 5 or 10 dollar games? Everyone seems to want them to be low buyin.

I would imagine everybody would want these to be regular length, not turbos.

Best of 3 during the "regular" season?

Best of 3 is too time consuming. I think one tournament is enough.

unless it's best of 3 turbos?

single match no blind increase?

chrismystero 03-07-2007 05:10 PM

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

i might be interested. my preference would be that the buy in be < $10, and that it either be regular or turbo structure. however im not a big fan of the "best of 5, best of 7...etc. thing" id rather just 1 match. however, if it is best of x games, id still consider playing for sure.

Edit: my preferable buy in range would be $5-$11

Re: Anyone interested in a Heads-up League? (NLTRN)

OK, I'd like to get it started. I'm going to go ahead and take the initiative here... but I would definately appreciate help from some more experienced 2+2ers. Perhaps a team of 3 co-commisioners.... I know you expressed some interest in this ChicagoRy, also someone with some experience setting up private tournaments as I have never done this at Stars... Anyone interested in helping me commish please PM me...

Also, I'd like all players interested in joining the league to please PM me and let me know you intend to be in the league so I can make a list

This week as I'm getting input from interested co-commisioners, and interested players, I'm also going to be finalizing the format and rules of the league.
