Convincing the wife ....
Apologize for cross posting as I don't really know where to post this.
I won a freeroll to get in a $150K MTT at 1:30 PM Pacific time today... Strange. My wife will play the super lotto and play a Filipino (I'm white) "gambling" card game with family for quarters. Yet, when I spend five hours winning a FREEROLL to get into a $150K tournament (starts today), she says that I am GAMBLING and she doesn't approve of poker! I explain that I spent no money and it takes a little skill to get past a few hundred players and that I have a chance to make up to $35K (or so) for free. She doesn't seem to get it. HELP please.... When it comes to people you love, gambling isn't about the money.

Re: Convincing the wife ....
Or, you could tell her if you cant play, then you will get a couple of mail order brides to keep her in line.

Re: Convincing the wife ....
Your wife is filipino, there is no convincing her. Whatever she says is right. Just deal with it.
I know, my wife is filipino. |
Re: Convincing the wife ....
Don't use the 'I can win up to 35k' argument. It sounds like you're addicted, and that you don't have a clue. Since the chance of you winning those 35k is less than 0.5%, that argument is pretty silly.
A solid argument would be "I would really enjoy playing this and since it didn't cost me any money I can't see any reason why I shouldn't." |
Re: Convincing the wife ....
I have a feeling she's more concerned with the amount of time you spent and will be spending sitting in front of the computer than she really is about you "gambling". And by definition, when you risk nothing you aren't gambling. You have nothing to loose and alot to gain. Would she against you entering some dumb free contest to win $35k if it was a local radio station putting it on? Surely not.
If she plays the lottery and a card game for quarters, she's gambling. Playing a freeroll poker tourney is not. If she won't admit to these hypocrisies then you are fighting a battle you'll never win. Although with women you are usually fighting a battle you'll never win. I'd play the tournament and tell her you'll spend some quality time with her once it's over. Then do it. Also do not seem very "results oriented" about the tourney. That way if you bust out, you can say you still had a good time challenging yourself etc. Let us know how you do. Good luck. |

Re: Convincing the wife ....
OK. Here is the follow-up. She had no problem letting me play. There were 644 players and I busted out after three hours, finishing in 90th place. Had to make top 63 to be in the money. She said she is more concerned that online poker is somehow "rigged" and, believe it or not, she is less concerned if I just try my luck at the local Bay-101 casino. I've only played live tourneys twice. The second time was at Bay-10 for the Shooting Star, but I entered late & started with just two chips, LOL! So, that discussion was actually a plus and I guess something good came out of this even though I didn't cash. Thanks for the input.

Re: Convincing the wife ....
Sir, what you need to do is go to a friend's house and play from there. Wifes don't understand poker. They really don't. My wife bitches all the time about it. "Bear, if we need money, go get another job," etc. Plus, she's Russian, which just makes the bitch-fest worse (Russian women are beautiful, so there must be a reason why Russian men consume so much vodka....that would be the reason). However, she has no problem go to Macy's or Nordstrom's and spending the money I earn playing poker. It's a paradox. Anyhow, I just play when she's not home or I go to a friend and play/work from there.

Re: Convincing the wife ....
Its easy as I was in a similar situation to you.
If you are a winning player, show her the proof. Once I layed out my spreadsheets, she understood a lot better and was much more understanding. If you are a losing player, maybe you should take her advice |

I am never marrying someone who is dumb/narrow-minded.

Re: Convincing the wife ....
First, no matter what she says playing a freeroll is not and cannot be considered gambling since their are no $$ at stake. I however wouldn't make that argument because she'll go on "tilt" if you ever start playing for real money.
The bottom line is her form of gambling is no more or less right than than yours (playing poker). I would say you should find out what the real issue is and deal with that. More than likely it's a time issue in which case maybe you could play while she's out with family/friends/work, etc. If that doesn't work, get a divorce...lol |
Re: Convincing the wife ....
it's the same as convincing her to let you have anal. you need to soften her up over a couple days and let her see how pleased it will make her to see you happy because youre such a great guy. it takes some time and thought. flowers, kind words, love stuff. dont talk about it all the time though, just keep it silently in mind it's what youre working toward. arguing "ah cmon youll like it, it wont hurt, im not even big" will only shut her down completely. chances are youll get your way if you have any sort of savvy and charm.

[/ QUOTE ] Well at least he didn't saying to use the spit in the hole and ram it in approach. But in response to OP - as a woman I am often embarrassed by other women's antics - she is being very closed minded and using a double standard. Many people don't see lotteries and poker being the same thing but it is. However,my guess is she's not mad about poker - only you are not paying attention to her. Not saying it's right but what can ya do? Sit talk and talk with her about it; don't lose your cool and and work out a deal. If you lose your cool she'll only use that too against you. Sigh...men and women should be allowed time to do their own thing in even in a married relationship. Cooperation, compromise and understanding is the key. This just makes me love my man more. Good luck OP. |

Re: Convincing the wife ....
OK. First ignore all the single-ignorants responses here.
Women are frightened from the unknown. They need to have control over things. This isnt necessarily a bad thing but thats beside the point. The only way I could get my wife to be ok with poker was to put a limit on the initial amount of money that I was "allowed" to spend on this new hobby. I deposited $200 and we agreed that if I lost it that was the end. I lost it (I sucked). I then got a $60 belated signup bonus which I turned into a kickass bankroll. I did a few 2k cashouts and "showed her the money". No problems with my hobby since (of course the regular "how late did you stay up on the comp.??" but hey - thats standard). |
