I Want To Build A Table
I was looking through the sticky and some other sites. Most look like they have cup holders. What are the best plans out there for a table without them?
My thought is keep the drinks off of or near the playing surface so less chance of spillage. I would have smaller tables to put drinks on instead. |

get cup holders, tables without cup holders obviously have way more spills... it's unavoidable, you're going to have people drinking at the table

I'm assuming it looks like pismeyers table in the thread below. If it's completely upholstered, and you have everything bought, you should easily be able to rack it out in 3 hours or so. the layout and the cutting doesnt take too long. The upholstery will probably slow you down the most, because most carpenters dont do it. Add a couple hours more if you have to go to the lumberyard and the fabric store, cuz that stuff takes a surprising amount of time If you have a racetrack, you have a lot of time waiting for multiple coats of stain and polyurethane to dry. This ends up taking a day or two more, because there isnt much you can do while stuff dries. |

Building a table takes time... especially if you have a racetrack like the above poster said. There are times you just have to wait... like for glue to dry.
Instead of trying to bang it out in one day... maybe plan a few days to do it. Either a Fri/Sat/Sun... or maybe three Sats in a row. Here are pics of my table. Mind you I have absolutely NO carpentry skills... yet I was able to build this. I kinda want to sell this table and build another (just for the sake of building another table). If we did it again, we could probably do it in 6. Doing a racetrack one wouldn't add much time. The majority of the time is spent on the rail. |

Two guys, one with woodworking skills, who were thinking about doing tables as a side business built a table that I agreed to purchase.
After the 11 hour Saturday it took them (no racetrack, just felt and elbow rest area), they swore off doing another. |

I'm engineer, it takes a few beers to think... Joking - 5 to 6 hours if you have all the materials and tools, a solid weekend if you're not handy. Some of my high ticket items were the whisper vinyl, Joann's velveteen, Smackdogg cupholders (big enough for a pint glass), the foam, etc. There were other things I needed to buy (tools) that added to the cost. I needed a 3 5/8" holesaw for the cupholders. Clamps to clue the boards together. Stuff like that, which I wouldn't need to buy again if I built another table. Actually I just found my old sheet that itemized everything. Here it is. Poker Table Costs Plywood - $115 1" Rail Foam - $70 Whisper Rail Vinyl - $30 Truck Rental - $20 Cupholders - $29 T bolts - $3 Machine screws - $3 Wood screws - $6 Poly - $15 Mineral - $15 Sandpaper - $12 Velveteen - $35 1/4 headliner - $25 Staples - $10 Wood glue - $7 Table legs - $20 |

I believe they were $35 each at Home Depot. Since I was doing a racetrack and you will see the actual plywood... I went with the best grade available. Everything is also more expensive in NYC than out in the sticks... so that would probably factor in as well. |

I will do a sketch a little later.
This method wasn't shown on the couple sites i looked at when i did this. Came up with it on my own. did this a couple years ago, so it may be on a site somewhere else, if someone else thought the same thing i did. 1. Cut the OSB and stain grade plywood to the desired size of the table, round ends and all, desired width, etc. 2. Measure 3" or so from the edge of the OSB, and cut out the ring. this is the top ring for your rail, that will get padded and upholstered. Round the top edges if you have a router. I don't know if this is even neccessary, but i did it. If you don't it probably doesn't matter. 3. Measure 1" or so in on the stain grade and cut another ring. mark which end is which, so the ring fits back into place when the rail is made. 4. Cut the middle part of the stain grade plywood out if you are doing a racetrack. if not, skip this part. 5. Mount the stain grade table part to the OSB table part. Stain grade will overhang the OSB by a couple inches, so you won't see the OSB, unless you duck under the table. 6. Glue and screw the OSB 3" ring to the top of the plywood 1" ring, and give time to dry. Then, put into place on the Stain grade table part, and drill a few holes through the OSB and the table, so you can fasten it on with t-nuts. Or, better yet you can skip this and just fasten it from the bottom with wood screws. You are'nt taking it off much anyways. I realized this after i did the t nut thing. 7. Upholster the table part, and the rail separately, do all your stain, varethane and all, then assemble. Some of the sites linked have guys doing similar things, using a couple different pieces of wood for their rails. this is way easier. Edit: im going to attach the sketch in a separate post, cuz i cant get on photobucket at work. if these instructions dont make sense, PM me and ill try to explain better. |

The foam was expensive because I bought the really big piece (not smaller pieces which I glued together and risked having a seam). Let me know cause I may build another table down the road. |

I just looked into some bamboo plywood, like you see on some of the modern furniture, cuz its cool stuff, and i want to make something out of it. It's about $200 for a sheet. Needless to say, i wont be making anything out of it any time soon. Maple burl can go for over $500 per sheet |

The money doesn't bother me too much as living in a city has its advantage/disadvantages. Just like every metropolis... you will pay more for goods... yet salaries are typically higher so it evens out. One thing I did notice last year was the price of foam was a lot more expensive. Not sure if its the same now... but that $70 foam really hurts. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I gotta admit I am glad I didnt cheap out because the foam feels really nice (not too soft, yet not too firm). But it was definitely pricey. |

Get those removable cup holders they use at casinos that have the flat part that slides under the rail. They fit a standard bottle or can as well as solo cups. shouldnt have any spill problems with em and the smaller drink tables wont get knocked over when someone gets up to pee.
