how long did it take to get your first win?

I'm either gonna feel better that there are fellow sufferers out there who haven't won after playing a while or get very depressed. I've been playing tourneys for about a year now, playing on average 4-5 a week. I've had a third, and about 5 final tables as well as a third in a live 100 player tourney. How long had you been playing when you got your first 500+ player win?

1st win was a 20/180 when those were the only 180s PS offered...maybe a year or so ago.

I've never won a 500+ player event. I won the second MTT I played.
It's pretty hard to win big field events. Thinking about it now, it might actually be the case that I've never FT-ed a 500+ player event. My biggest cash came from making the penultimate table of a 800 player event with a huge overlay and a very flat payout structure. Other than that, the biggest field I've beaten outright was probably 240 or so.

I would advise playing smaller fields.

How many MTTs have you done in that time period? That's rather more relevant than saying 'a year'.

Probably took me around a year to get the first 500+ win.

I've won only one +500 player tourney, and that was more than a year ago. Guess it took 1― years of playing before that occurred. The amount of luck you need to cruise through and win a large tournament full of donkeys, is ridiculuos.

I know, it sometimes feels depressing when you see the same players start sweat threads night after night. But remember three things.

1. They're very good tournament players.
2. Most frequent sweat threads come from large buy-in tournaments with ~300, or less, entrants.
3. Those who frequently start sweat threads play loads and loads of tournaments every single day.

well I did say average of 4-5 a week so around 250...ugh . I think I must take the advice to drop to smaller fields. I mostly play the stars 55k $10 rebuy and FT 25k $26 which are huge, 1500+ players

Right, missed that part.

Seriously, practice some field selection and play some 200-500 man fields. Playing gigantic fields all the time is, to put it crassly, a bit moronic. Try some smaller sites. You'd be amazed at the low level of the competition even at the $50-$100 buy-ins.

Try some of the PS 180 SNGs. Perfect for you IMO.

Re: how long did it take to get your first win?

i started playing poker about a year ago and just won my first MTT (10$/836 entrants). i played approximately 150 tourneys of 500+ entrants, but i was a complete newbie for the first ~100, playing weak-tight going for ITM (interestingly succeeding very often).

I recommend to play as many SNGs as you can to get used to lategame play, which is the key difference between a 15th and a 1st place finish. And then donīt adjust weak-tightish when playing the 5th hour of a MTT. If it is correct to push Q4s into a bigger stack, it is still - and especially - true when you got deep in a large MTT.

(sorry for sounding like an excited noob, which i am)

Re: how long did it take to get your first win?

My first live tourney ever and maybe my 5th mtt tourney I got 3rd in Arizona in a $150 buy in with around 150 players. I got to final table and folded my way to 3rd. Being the I was from Canada they took $500 out of my $1850 pay day. Then they wanted a tip for dealers. I told them the US gov't just took their tip and I haven't played a live tourney in the states again as it is not profitable to anyone outsite the US because of the taxes. You win in Canada, you keep it all, no questions asked. Just another reason why Canada is 100 times better than the US of A!

Party had a $2 buy in, no rake and they added $500 to the pot about 2 years ago ... 2,500 entrants and I won that.

Had only been playing for a month or so ... donked my way to the win.

Dont get too worked up and become obsessed with a win. I went through a really bad spell because I did a while back. I came 2nd in five large field tournies and each time I got my money in HU with the best hand and I lost each one. It killed me and I stated playing angry and desperate for a win. but then I realized how well I played just to get HU and now Im playing better than ever. Still no big win but I know its coming I can feel it.

Re: how long did it take to get your first win?

Ive been playing seriously for about 1.5 years now and still haven't won a 500+ person field. The amount of variance is ridiculous. I would definitely suggest the stars 180 man or even the 360 max. you seem to be a solid player (from the little bit I read) and just need a smaller field (therefore less luck) to get a good FT cash and hopefully a win.

Re: how long did it take to get your first win?

I've played approx 100 of these 500+ player tournaments. I've made 2 final tables and placed first once. I've been playing MTT'S for about 4 months, but I play a LOT of these.
With only one win out of 100, my ROI in these is about 40%, but I'm ITM 25% of the time...
Definitely play more smaller field tourneys. I regularly FT the PS 180's

Re: how long did it take to get your first win?

I've only been playing online since Jan.4th of this year. I don't play too many large 500+ field tourneys because I'm still learning strategy. I have won a few MMT Sats into the FTOPS series but the fields were less than 100. I also like to play the 45man & 90man SnGs on FTP and have had good luck there. I FT a very high % (about 35%) of the games and have a good ITM%.

I also like to play STTs just to work on my FT skills.
