It\'s been a week now since my dad died.
 

And nothing sounds like any fun. Is this normal? I've been making every effort to get out and do stuff. I played in a live 5/10 nl game, I went fishing this morning and nothing seems to have any spark.

Any ideas? I know Im not depressed because I've been depressed before and this feels different. What cheers you guys up when your feeling down? Im open to suggestions.

BAN^. something that gets me in good moods is just driving around backroads with some good tunes. if you are in a warm place, which i would imagine since you went fishing, just drive around back roads with the window down rockin out to some good tunes.

I think inside we all died a little a week ago. We all die a little more and more each day. It's science. When I am down I light my knife til its burning hot and penetrate my wrists. OP, no telling what will cheer you personally up. just try doing something that makes you feel comfortable. eat your favorite meal, play a fav game, drive around, w/e you like to do until something feels right. GL and im sorry for your loss

While I don't think this is the norm, I don't think its that rare. Give it some more time, then maybe see a psychiatrist/psychologist?

I'm very sorry about your loss. There's some good ideas here already (ie the go for a drive or get a pet and even the prayer at the risk of getting flamed myself...). I'm sure the rest of your family is hurting as well, so if you're comfortable you might talk to them and come up with new things to do together.

In addition, you might take up a new hobby or two (on a side note I wound up learning poker after the death of my sister....) to fill up the time.

Most important, it's normal to be sad, but you should take comfort in that your dad loved you and doesn't want you to stay sad.

You're grieving. It's a process. I think it'll take a lot longer then a week.

My dad died four weeks ago, same drawn out cancer situation. Being sad because your father died after a long and probably painful battle before he ever got to attend your wedding or see his grandkids, is normal, not a mental problem. It gets easier every day. Just go about your normal life and don't avoid the subject with your family.

Give it time. You may not be depressed but you have suffered a loss. Each day will be easier. Remember that there are other people (relatives)who loved him and feel the loss also. Talk, cry and laugh with them, even if you already did that at a big service already.

Dude, you have suffered a tremendous loss that will fade with time but will stay with you forever. Don't be concerned with rushing through your mourning period...You are entilted to be sad, angry, withdrawn, etc., regardless of what others may think or tell you about going on with your life... There is a time to grieve and that time is from now until you don't feel like grieving anymore, however many weeks or months that takes.

My condolences to you and your family. I'll say a prayer for you.

talking helps.... so yes talk to your mom, if she's still around, talk to family, to friends (though it will feel like they only have to live w/ your pain while they're talking to you, and so they don't really understand.... but such conversations help too), to your god if you believe, to your dad - out loud....

don't be in a rush to force yourself back to happy.... chilling is a good idea like previously mentioned.... reading, music, whatever... good luck and my condolences
