This is probably the wrong forum because I'm looking for some serious advice, but whatev.

I never know what to tell people when they ask me about school/my job. I try to be modest, but that usually just makes me sound like a bum. Like two days ago I meet a friend of a friend, and we have this convo:

Him: So, what do you study?
Me: I studied philosophy. I don't do school anymore though.
Him: You finished?
Me: I kinda retired from school. It's not for me.
Him: Oh. So what do you do?
Me: I play poker.
Him: Oh, cool. (Obviously thinks I'm a degen and trying to make me feel comfortable) Yeah I know a guy who made $21k his senior year playing poker, so you can make a decent living off of that.
Me (who made $21k before breakfast): Yeah.

The next day another guy and I have a similar conversation where he doesn't understand when I tell him I don't do school anymore for a while and then once he does assures me that I'll figure stuff out. He also knew a guy that made $10k in a week!

I don't really like to talk about poker to non-poker players, and I don't wanna just tell them that I'm rich. I don't really care that people don't know how much money I make, but I don't like when they look down on me like I'm homeless.

What should I say when people ask about school/work?

I perform with a professional improv company every week, and I have articles published in Bluff Magazine, although I don't really make any money from those. Should I just say that I'm a writer/actor?

Should I just get a baller watch and let it speak for me?

What do I say when people tell me about how much money someone they know has made? What about when they ask me the most I've ever won or lost? I usually say that I'd rather not tell them.

For starters you could talk like you are more of a balla.

Using a joke line this is excellent. I kind of prefer it to telling people im a professional poker player these days. Mostly, due to the negative associations it brings up and having to answer the same questions all the time.

Also if you care about what people think you should buy cool toys (car watch etc.). I know its lame but these are things people consciously and subconsciously associate with success. After people see my place/car etc. I really don’t get negative reactions anymore .

People our age in the towns we hang out in are normally college students. When people are trying to start a conversation and build rapport they will often ask you what you are studying. When you say your not in school it makes the conversation very awkward if you don’t say what you do. Depending on how you say it they will probably assume you are a burnout/loser because many people who drop out of college are.

I dunno, I would think it's kinda cool to have people who barely know you think you're a degenerate bum when in fact you're very successfull. Maybe this gets old after awhile, though? I guess when the person you're talking to is a hot girl it matters, but with anyone else who cares?

you are what you are jman. say you play poker and make "boatloads" or you "make enough" or you "live well" or you say exactly how much you make. it doesnt matter anymore. you decided to be an internet poker player so thats what you are. you know ppl dont understand it and you know you cant make them understand. who cares what ppl think?

I don't like when they look down on me like I'm homeless.

It makes them feel good with having to work for a living for the next 50 years, and you should feel good too because they're wrong. Everyone wins.

Victor is right. You are a professional poker player, there's no point in lying to people or trying to get around saying it. There's no shame in it. But you also knew when you began doing this that no one would understand. So just tell them you do well or say you make six figures or whatever it is you want to make it clear to them you aren't a bum.

Yeah wear a nice watch buy a grill, when its time to pay for lunch say i got it and drop like a k on the table and leave. For real though just say pokers been good to you and you feel like you can make a better than average living from it. Thats modest and honest.

How about, "I came into a sizable chunk of money and now I do some technical writing and work with an improv group." When they ask how you came into the money, just say you won it. they will assume lotto or something so you will probably end up getting hit up for loans all the time.

I find your problem to be peculiar...when I tell some stranger or distant acquaintance that I am a poker player, their eyes usually light up and they become interested to some degree or another. Mostly they ask some uninformed or strange question, like "do you play poker on tv or on the internet or what?" Sometimes, they act incredulous, and, yeah they usually got a poker story of their own; but it's rare that I meet someone who can't begin to wrap his mind around the fact that I play poker full-time, for a living.

I don't know you or your offline personality at all, but I would say you shouldn't go out of your way to impress anyway by getting a "baller watch" or telling them you are an actor, or even do those things by way of "explanation." Now, if you want to wear a blinged-out watch, or aspire to become a performing artist, then go with that, but you should never have to pretend to be something you're not comfortable and familiar with.

Anyway, it's generally not rewarding to hang out with people who can't begin to understand that college isn't for everyone and that there are limitless paths to pursue in life.

whenever im talking with a girl that doesnt know me she always assumes im a liar. i dont really care what they think tho, its funny when they find out from someone who does know me that im foreal, they always come back to ask more questions and are usually a little extra 'friendly'. in general tho i just try not to go into detail about it. 'yeh school wasnt my thing. i play poker, no big deal.'

college kids are likely not to know or care what poker is and assume all 20-somethings out of school are losers. people who know you've graduated law school but play poker for a living can guess that it makes financial sense for you to do so. it's mad fun seeing them jealous. holla.
