Songs that made you cry
I know everyone here has cried at a movie or two (except for Sklansky...but that's because he's a robot and incapable of tears) but how many songs have made you weep?
For me the only song that has ever melted my cruel heart is "At Last" by Etta James |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Seeing this thread started up again makes me cry. It's been done A LOT. Here's just one example:
http://www.topix.net/forum/news/weird/TVNLM6SBH7S79I4GQ Nice to see Falco's 'Jeanie' on the first page. Love that song. Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat', Nine Inch Nails 'Something I Can Never Have' and 'Hurt' or the Sisters of Mercy 'Some Kind of Stranger' did it for me when I was a sad 17-year-old goth. When I was 19-20 I used to bawl to Suede's 'The Two of Us' and 'The Living Dead'. I remember an afternoon listening to 'The Power of Love' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood on repeat, feeling like bawling every time. The Smiths 'Asleep' and 'Well I Wonder' Later, the sad songs from Blood on the Tracks. Not sure what it would be now. My life is so mundane I need music not to cry to, but to grumble. There was definitely a stage in my life where I was more interested in music that would make me cry than music I could dance to. Perhaps because I found crying easier... |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Padraic My Prince by Bright Eyes
Mama Africa by Midnite Boots Of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan I stopped listening to those songs awhile ago. Fake Plastic Trees has been making me sad lately. |
Re: Songs that made you cry

Re: Songs that made you cry
Shine on you Crazy Diamond. It's not the lyrics or the song itself really, but a good friend of mine died after a Pink Floyd concert in 89 and this was his favourite song.

Re: Songs that made you cry
Oh, and Bonnie Prince Billy 'I See A Darkness'. It's a song that hits you harder the more you hear it. The first half dozen times, you might not understand what the fuss is about. But it gains in power with each listen.
How about Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, anyone? Or Nick Cave's Boatman's Call? |

Re: Songs that made you cry
"No Surprises" - Radiohead.
A friend of mine was in a terrible biking accident (the car won) and it was touch-and-go if he'd survive overnight. While he was conscious he asked another of our friends to go put this song on repeat for him. He lived. It still gives me goosebumps. |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Which Will - Nick Drake.

Re: Songs that made you cry
"silent all these years" by Tori Amos
|
Re: Songs that made you cry
Speaking of Tori Amos--
Neil Young's original is a heartbreaker, but this version of Phildelphia isn't bad either. The song always reminds me of friends who died way too young. I've got my friends in the world I had my friends when we were boys and girls and the secrets came unfurled... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0KzuiqDDZU |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Here is mine. Yellow lab puppy, had him for 15 years, best dog ever, had to put him to sleep a few years back. Next morning crying I heard this song come on the radio, a nice acoustic guitar blues. Ever since then when I hear it...
Life By The Drop Stevie Ray Vaughn |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
amazing... FYC |
Re: Songs that made you cry
Hallelujah's been used in so many tv drama season finale montages that it doesn't have the effect anymore, but how about "Lover, You Should've Come Over" from the same album?

Re: Songs that made you cry
Nice... Tori...
But for whatever reason, I used to always get choked up when I heard a couple songs: Somewhere over the rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version (you know, the one with the ukalele). & Return to Pooh Corner - Kenny Loggins (don't ask, I don't know why, and I can't believe I'm admiting to this.) |

Re: Songs that made you cry
Wow, first song ever to make me tear up so I had to bump this. I'm not a huge country fan or anything, but it's unfortunately too relevant right now.
