Obama\'s a TAG

Holding his cards close
Barack Obama is the perfect political poker player: patient, humble and willing to take a risk

Sheldon Alberts, CanWest News Service
Saturday, February 10, 2007

Long before he became a political rock star with designs on the White House, Barack Obama was known to friends in the Illinois legislature as a fearsome card player.

During weekly games of Texas Hold 'Em, he played a tight style of poker -- patiently waiting for the right cards, folding when dealt a bad hand and taking few unnecessary risks.

"He knew the chances of winning and he knew he was going to walk out of there even or ahead almost every time," says Terry Link, an Illinois state senator and former poker partner who had his wallet emptied by Mr. Obama on many occasions.

I don't believe he has a very good shot at the presidency. But one wonders if an actual poker-player in the White House might help things out on this whole online-poker legal situation.
Couldn't hurt.

No idea what his thoughts were on the UIGA though.

does anyone else think the Republicans are pushing Obama, in case Hillary Clinton wins the nomination, and they need to garner votes from blacks/minorities (that typically turns out in low numbers voting, but would likely come out strong in support of a black Presidential candidate)

IMO the Dem's were going to tout Hillary as the 'first woman pres', and the Repub's are 'playing back' by introducing 'The 1st Black pres candidate'

lol I think..... I think I was saying that, if the Dems nominate some *old white guy* then maybe the Republicans counter with *some other old white guy*, as it looks- we may get the "1st Female Pres. candidate vs. the '1st Black presidential candidate -

an observation really, another one: this site is kinda slow sometimes - and I don't mean the servers -

Absolutely the Repubs are pushing Obama.
This seems pretty obvious to me but is still a wonderful observation on many levels.
But they need to watchout because the Dems are surely going to counter with a strong push for McCain.
I also heard that the Green Party is engaged in serious talks with Pat Buchanan as their 2008 candidate.

I want to add a conservative tone to this liberal thread. You libs can slurp your boy O'reilly all day, but the fact of the matter is Al Franken and Bill Mahr are the most rational minds from the school of conservative thought since Lenin.

There was a congressional card game for years on Capital Hill. Both R&D played. Tip O'Neil was a solid, no action Boston gambler, he had the best record in the game. He said Nixon was a fish and had to get hit by the deck to win.

Re: Obama\'s a TAG

Truman was a monster poker player, Nixon was a big winner in the Navy but rumors of cheating dogged him. Many, many presidents have played and you can bet almost any of them could be good if they wanted to. Clinton would probably be a donk in cash games because he needs action but could be a stud in tourneys. Bush Sr. would probably be tag. The only recent Pres. I can't see being good at poker is the current one, W. just seems like a dummy and the type who'd spend all night whining about bad beats.

The rumor is that he partially funded his '46 congressional campaign through poker.

In his autobiography, Nixon wrote: "I learned that the people who have the cards are usually the ones who talk the least and the softest; those who are bluffing tend to talk loudly and give themselves away."

Take that, Caro.
