What was your coolest Inside Information bet win?

For me it was in college, my buddy played for Oregon State's basketball team.

The Beavs were playing UCLA, and he told me, "Coach Payne said we are going to not even go into our offense until there are 7 or 8 seconds left on the shot clock."

They were going to slow things waaaaaaay down against the powerful Bruins.

So I bet every cent I had on the under, won by like 20 points.

You guys got any stories like this one?

A buddy of mine helped Jack Morris into a cab at 2:30 in the morning after a night of long island iced teas. He pitched at noon that day. I loaded up on Milwaukee and they scored 11 runs in the top of the 1st.

Also, my cousin is an NL pitcher and I picked him up and took him to a game he was to start in. He was hungover as hell and his wife was threatening divorce. Let's just say I love my cousin, but I love my wallet more. He got slaughtered by Detroit the year they lost a so many games.

My cousin is Rex Grossman. In private, he told me he was a fraud as a QB and there was no way in hell he could complete a game without an interception. I bet on INDY..CHA CHING...

Mine would have to be the guy here who had Billy Joel's rehearsal times for the National Anthem. Of course, I only put 1 unit on that bet...

Love you Bill Joel, you're such an amazing singer and could possibly be the next American Idol.

Big Brother...3 I think it was.

Intertops had prop bets every week on who would be kicked out of the house.

I subscribed to the 24 hour live feed, watched it / read transcripts written by people who watched it all day.

Almost every week the houseguest decided who would be voted out before hand, however the edited broadcasts left it completely up in the air. The line was based on the edited broadcasts.

I never lost a bet, bet the max every week and won about 3K that season.

I haven't seen this wager available since. Only longe term bets as to who will win the whole thing.

A couple of seasons ago, one of the online books stopped taking bets on the Amazing Race because of a ton of suspicious betting on one couple. I found out which couple, and bet it on another site at 4-1. Free $$.

1997 NCAA tournament.

First round game 13-LIU v 4-Villanova on Friday, LIU is highest scoring team in country, with highest scoring player in country, Charles Jones, who would shoot 37 times v Nova. LIU set the alltime NCAA record with a 117-pt margin of victory that year. Yes, 117.

Nova is top 15 team and darkhorse to win it all [they'd lose next round, ftr to a good Cal team with Tony Gonzalez that almost beat #1 UNC]

O/U was about 158-160. People assumed Nova, as the more skilled team, would slow it down, work it inside, walk the ball upcourt. We were leaning on the Under but had not bet.

Steve Lappas said the night before the game, 'They want to run with us? Let's see if they can run with us, I'm not afraid of [censored] LIU'

We literally RAN to the sportsbook at Caesar's to get down on the Over in size.

'INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Villanova and LIU played a game yesterday unlike any the Lawrence Joel Coliseum had ever seen, a high-flying, trash-talking playground scramble masquerading as an NCAA tournament game.
Villanova jumped on the flying conveyer belt provided by LIU and finally staggered off with a 101-91 victory, advancing to tomorrow's NCAA East Regional second-round game against California.'

I once knew a girl whos husband worked for a buddy of mine. He told me the day before that the husband would be working late the following Tuesday. Thats a "safe " bet there.

Local harness racetrack. I am friends with a girl who's father owns horses. I see a horse of his who dropped in class last time out, was running sixth at the top of the stretch and broke stride finishing last.

He pulls me aside and tells me the driver/trainer told him the horse was full of run last race. When he pulled out to make his move the horse stepped on the wheel of the sulky ahead of him and lost his stride. Hello.

Ever wonder why an 8-1 shot gets bet down to 3-1 at the last minute? Of course the horse won for fun.

TheGreek used to take action on Celebrity Boxing, which was pretaped. I made a few bets there when I knew the outcome already.

Whichever year Washington was a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney, a friend of mine got info about 90 minutes before the selection show that Washingotn was getting a #1 seed, and we were able to bet them on Tradesports at something like 20/1 or 25/1 that they'd get a #1 seed.

No one can get this official info before it is released. The Committee is in that hotel room for 2.5 days, and they put together literally hundreds of unofficial brackets that get tossed. Perhaps it was one of those that got removed and then the info leaked. UW was a 1-seed just 2 years ago in 2005 and there's no way that info [on the final decision of seedings] could leak from an official source. It was just a very solid rumor that came true.

I was at the DI sportsbook and the bookmaker told me "I won't book the bet, but if you go across the street bet the Giants against Philly. Dykstra went straight from our Baccarat tables to Mcarran Airport where we flew him to SFO in our jet at 8 AM and they play in SF at 12:15"

Of course back then I made a "major" wager of $20... lol

I don't have anything anywhere near as cool as the stuff listed here, but I remember that Bodog had a prop on who was going to die on a Lost episode in Season 2. There were spoilers all over the internet that it was going to be Shannon and Bodog still had her listed at something like 5:1. I figured that they must know something I didn't and only bet $20. Oops.

I don't know any details past that it was "a reliable source" (and even if I did I probably wouldnt be at liberty to post about it on a public message board), but shouldn't the TV producers and such know a bit in advance who the number 1 seeds are? They have to prepare the graphics that say "#1 seed Washington" and prepare the brief segment talking about the team, etc. I understand your point that this information is heavily guarded but given how much "confidential" information gets leaked, nothing would surprise me.

Wish I knew someone on the editing team of reality tv shows...

Re: What was your coolest Inside Information bet win?

OT: I don't understand why offshore books would bother to allow betting on reality TV shows that aren't in real-time (such as The Amazing Race and Survivor) and just stick to allowing bets on American Idol which is at least some sort of contest whatever you think of it.

The result might still have to be determined with a live final/show but most of the shows have been filmed months ago and a select group of people already know the result or what it's going to be.

Re: What was your coolest Inside Information bet win?

A lot of books only allow betting on pre-taped reality TV shows for small amounts. A couple years ago Fezzik posted some information about a pre-taped reality TV show and I was able to bet it on Intertops, but the limit was something like $110 to win $70. They can afford to give away money like that for publicity purposes.

unless Dykstra was doing this with the rest of his team I think this is only a very slight advantage.
Especially given the possibility that he might not have the day off for a day game.

When a position player parties hard the night before a day game it CAN mean that he's already been told that they're going to rest him the next day...go out and have a fun time.

Obviously this isn't always the case. Just a warning to be careful about putting too much stock in seeing just one position player partying it up.

Huh? He opened with "Let's Go Crazy," which I predicted he'd open with as soon as I heard he was the halftime act.

Watching it on YouTube just now, the first noises to come out of the speakers were about 40 seconds of percussions and some "We will We will [something something]" chanting, but the first song was "Let's Go Crazy," which must have been one of the choices.

EDIT: YouTube link.

Performify 02-13-2007 06:08 PM

Re: What was your coolest Inside Information bet win?

The chanting was Queen's "We Will Rock You".

Someone had insider access to the playlist and "We Will Rock You" was listed first and thought it was a winner for the field bet.

However, as evidenced by the event, Prince wasn't the one singing "We Will Rock You" as you mention, it was background music - Prince indeed opened with "Let's Go Crazy" which was an option. The field bet was a loser.

Yeah, I recognized the Queen bit, but after "We will, we will. . ." there were a lot more than two syllables. I think.
