R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
For those of you with young children, at what age do you feel it's ok to let your kids see and play whatever movies and video games he wants? How much does the content matter to you? How much research do you do if your child wants to see a potentially violent or sexual movie? Is nudity worse than violence?
I know it all depends on the content of the movie and maturity of the child, but I thought it would be interesting to see a poll for mature content in general |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
Uh, depends on the movie/game and the child.

Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
Depends greatly on the movie. My 8 year old has seen every Lord of the Rings a bunch of times each, the violence is very good vs. Evil, and I have no problem with him seeing it, because we took the time to talk about the movies before and after we saw them, and to explain that acting how you see the movie people do it is not OK.
He however is not even allowed on the same floor of the house when I am playing Grand THeft Auto, or watching something like Law and Order. |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
It mostly depends. If it's a violent game / movie, 13-14 is OK, within limits. The worst of it, they can wait until they're 17.
If it's sex / nudity, then I wouldn't allow it until they're old enough to get it themselves. FWIW, my parents wouldn't let me watch R rated movies until I was 17. I did it anyway, and I suspect most kids will. |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
With what it takes to get to R from PG-13, I'm in the 17 year old camp on that one. If the R rated movie is pre-PG-13 then maybe. Nudity and violence are troubling, but I would place glorifying or depicting drug use as much worse. My daughters will not see something like Boogie Nights in my house, while I might consider Godfather or Alien around 17 (assuming they wanted to see it).
My kids aren't into video games so I really can't answer that one because I haven't played a R or MA rated game. |

[/ QUOTE ] Naw, he's either gone to bed, or he is upstairs playing with something. If he wants to come downstairs, and I am playing "The Naughty Game" as he has so aptly coined it, he hears the shooting and yells something like "Dad, can I come downstairs?" so I can pause it. |

R rated for violence, drug use is far worse than R rated for sex
It's a shame the MPAA can't get this straight |

Overprotective Americans are funny as hell.
Only once have I not been able to see a movie in the theater because my brother was 15 (Kill Bill). I was surprised. That was relatively recently, and in a large theater - video rentals were never a problem, it wasn't even frowned upon. For instance, when I threw my 11th birthday party, we watched Commando. We replayed the scene where he throws the circular blade after he comes out of the shed, because it was over so quick and we wanted to figure out WTF happened. We also played Mortal Kombat, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. As far as I can tell, being able to do that was fairly standard in my whole class. Don't worry about it. Your kids likely aren't retarded. None of us grew up to be serial killers. |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
Depends. I would be much more concerned with the violence than I would with the sex/nudity, however.
|
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
lol, f taht. especially sex/nudity.
lol @ the standards here, everybody can watch everything but violence is rated for 16 years and older and sex/nudity for 18 years and older. wtf are you more affraid for, your kid turning out a serial killer/being obsessed with violence or watching naked chicks. omfg. |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
M 11-12, R 13-14. Depends on the exact game or movie though.

I remember watching tons of rated R movies as a kid (mainly action flicks)when I was elementary aged. I had gotten Mortal Kombat for my birthday when I was around 3rd grade/9 years old. All of my friends loved it. Although one of my friends parents called my mother and explained that she didn't want her child to play MK anymore at my place. I find all of this kind of humorous as my mother is very conservative, yet never really thought it was a big deal and that I "was mature enough to handle these things." I think that if parents explain things and the child understands that these types of behaviors in the game/movie are not acceptable "in real life" everything should be alright. |
Re: R rated movies, M rated video games, etc...
Any age. As soon as they ask to play Grand Theft Auto they can. I probably won't specifically introduce them to it at a young age, but if they get interested, fine.
