This article by Chris Hedges, who graduated from seminary at Harvard Divinity School and worked for many years as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, warns that the Christian Right is the most dangerous mass movement in American history.

This article is so close to the bone, equating christian right with fascism, that I can't wait to hear the objections. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I realize you're new to the club so you may feel some kind of obligation to demonstrate you're a true believer, but I'm certain they'll still give you a jacket and a membership card if you don't do this.

While I'm no fan of the Christian right, this article sounds a little like fear-mongering. I suppose if you were to ask Hidges, he might even agree -- I suspect he'd claim he's trying to send out a warning call or something.

Someone a little more cynical, like me for instance, may instead say he's trying to sell some books.

There is a documentary called "Friends of God" on HBO, should be on VOD, I recommend watching it. The scary thing about this entire movement is:

1. How sincere its minion low level believers are in their beliefs;

2. How power hungry and hypocritical the people who take advantage of the minions' sincerity are; and the fact that

3. The minions are so gullible that when one of their leaders is outed for the glutton or worse that he is, a new leader comes up and says, well that guy sure fell to to the dark side, but I am saved. Minions buy this and continue to slave away.

If this movement is not stopped, our society will not be much different from that of the islamo-facist regimes we are currently trying to overthrow because they do not allow freedom.

What's sad about this whole mess is that the only way to defeat these mideval superstitions is through education, and they know this. Hence their full out assault on preventing schools from teaching anything that could lead their minions into scepticism...

Or lobbying to ban vaccinations for cancer because they see it as a conflict for their religion.

Or they influence the FDA on whether or not certain forms of birth control are allowed in the US.

Or they begin influencing international relations to allow certain Biblical prophecies to be fulfilled.

Or they weaken a woman's right to choose.

MidGe was interested in objections, and bill's objection was relatively clear. It is a good point and hardly a hijack.

I'll add to bill's point that I believe there is little difference in the danger posed by Christian fundies telling me what I should and shouldn't do at the barrel of a gun and socialists telling me what I should and shouldn't do at the barrel of a gun. Neither side is satisfied without everyone around them marching to their own personal tune, whether they like it or not.

But you do concede, right, that 'radical Christians' or whatever we're calling them do indeed blow [censored] up from time to time, right? I don't know of any suicide bombings, at least in the US, so they don't "strap bombs to themselves". But at the very least, they do leave them at the front door of Planned Parenthood and strapped to the cars of abortion doctors. That is, when they don't assassinate the doctors standing in their kitchen at home first.

I don't think he really claimed to be much of a Christian -- and certainly he's nothing like the Army of God types who blow up abortion clinics in the name of Christ, nor was he ever tied to extremist Christian movements ala Eric Rudolph.

I never claimed they are not harmful. But so are lots of groups. The fact that you are comparing the "ban" of online poker to a nuclear bomb going off just shows how off base you are. They both are threats. They are just threats in different areas and different degrees.

I just watched that doc the other night. The scene where they're teaching 8 year olds to combat evolution was interesting.

The whole doc made me very sad.

I get the impression that the moderates (on the SMP forum) don't realize the beliefs of the Evangelicals nor how organized they are to reshape America in their beliefs.

I was a member of the Christian Right - now a member of the Christian left -

all must be taken with a grain of salt, people -

yes, they teach their kids that the world is 6K yrs old -and yes, they believe seperation of Church and State is a satanic doctrine -

but the most dangerous mass movement in history - no - and furthermore, all attempts to squash it are futile and wasted - no one gives up.

Truth is, there is a serious sickness in the American Christian Church. They serve both God and Money when Jesus specifically prohibited such things - as a result, what's in America looks more like the old days -

but the Church as a whole is thriving in places like China and Nepal where it's operating under full oppression -

you can't take away grace from people and you can't even try - the easiest way to handle them is to gently and calmly remove their leaders from power via elections - then they'll just sit and sulk for awhile - maybe then they'll get back to helping the poor, being a blessing instead of a judge, etc, etc.

And when I hear of all these kids they're having, raising up as soldiers, etc, etc - well - take that with a grain of salt too - I was once targeted to be one of the soldiers - and I abandoned my post - many of this generation's youth will too, more enamoured by the calling of Jesus then the orders/dictates of the old line leadership in the church.

Yes christianity as a whole is not a good tell on how someone will vote, but if they label themselves 'born-again' I seriously doubt they will be voting for anyone with a (D) at the end of thier name

Any extremism is dangerous. For any country the most dangerous extremisms are domestic (I guess you'll agree that for Muslim countries the most dangerous is Islamic extremism). Any movement that does not accept democracy is very dangerous for any country.

The key Founding Fathers were not Christians at all: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, George Washington, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Tom Paine.
