I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

Hello all,

The basic idea behind this forum is that good threads lead to good discussions. And good posters lead to good threads. Hence, thread starter list.

Now, I had to pick a list to get started with and there are tons of solid posters not on the list. I'll add them in updates over time. However, in the meantime, perhaps you guys want to discuss some topics here. Well, here's the place to suggest new threads for this forum if you don't have new thread posting rights yet.

Good posters who suggest good threads here will quickly be added to the thread starter list, of course.

Also, if you're a good poster, especially if you're relatively new to the forums, feel free to make a post here to highlight what a good poster you are and why you deserve to be starting awesome new threads here.

Oh yeah, anyone who wants to suggest posters who you think would be good additions to the thread starter list, this is the place to do that too. Let's not turn this into the OOT "name every halfway decent poster" thread, since we did that already.

Thanks, everyone.

I think this forum is an excellent idea and predict the demise of "The Lounge" in the coming months. I would like to be able to start a thread!

There is absolutely no way that the lounge will survive this, thank god.

Can I start threads? I've been cooking every day the last two weeks because it's healthier and I have some pictures of sweet meals I'd like to post.

El D,

I don't quite understand how you want this forum to differ from The Lounge. Or is it intended to replace The Lounge?

El D, I would love to hear your thoughts on some good reds that are within a non-baller college student's budget ($10-ish?). Also, is perusing my local grocery store's wine aisle good enough, or should I be looking into online vendors?

How long has the lounge been up? My guess is that this prove a point forum will have more posts in ten days than the lounge has had in its lifetime.

I would like to discuss chèvre and other forms of cheese made from goat milk. Not because I know a lot about that, but I would like to learn. It is indeed delicious goodness.

I would support that, simply so that Mrs. Utah wouldn't have to send 50 PMs every week.

Re: I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

Ron,

This forum has nothing to do with the Lounge.

This is the second experiment on 2+2 with pretty tightly moderated forums. Sklansky's forum is obviously as tightly locked down as it gets. I'm extending things a bit here. Maybe this will be a template of sorts for future types of forums as 2+2 continues to grow. Or maybe not. We'll see!

Anyway, in terms of difference, there are two big differences between this and the Lounge, or any other 2+2 forum. One is that 100 people can start new threads here. Almost 1000 times less than the number of people who can start threads in the other forums. The other is that good posts of any type on any topic are pretty much acceptable here.

What do I want this to be? I just want it to be a place where people I respect and enjoy interacting with can post. I want it to be a place where the simple rule of "don't make stupid posts" is enough to keep it a fun and interesting place to read and post. Sometimes that'll be some deep stuff, sometimes it'll be some short, funny, or caustic stuff. But it'll hopefully not be ridiculous and lame.

As 2+2 has grown, certain types of discussion have become far less frequent. That's to be expected as a place grows from a small community of users into a place with almost 100,000 users. I'm hoping that this corner of 2+2 can provide a little bit of that old-school 2+2 feel.

And as I state in the sticky, I'd like to talk about Politics, Sports, and other things that are now no longer kosher to discuss in OOT for good reason. But I also can't be a regular in all those forums. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one like that.

So, the Diablo forum. Maybe it'll turn into something cool. If so, great. If not, we'll close it down or try something else. Simple as that.

Re: I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

its been made clear many many times that these forums are very important to El Diablo but I can't help but think this may destroy OOT as well as the lounge. I suppose the ridiculous volume in OOT will keep up, its just I don't expect to post there (or for many on this list) much now because so many of the replies to my threads in the past have had little to nothing to do with what I was talking about

El Diablo 01-29-2007 06:41 AM

Re: I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

All,

I am a big fan of OOT and won't lobby for anything to be moved from there or anyplace else. I'll continue to post a lot in OOT because that's where the most people will see what I have to write. However, some things I'm less interested in preaching to the masses and more interested in discussing with a specific, smaller group of folks. Those things will go here.

edfurlong 01-29-2007 06:44 AM

Re: I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

This will definitely cannibalize OOT a little, but most of the folks that reply to threads and don't tend to start them will bounce back and forth with little difficulty.

I am proud to be one of the Hundred Points of Darkness.

This may have me re-thinking my whole "severely scaling back posting on 2+2" idea. Well, it probably won't, but I'll participate here.

El D,

Hope this works while not subtracting from OOT. I've always wanted to make a thread about the incredible grape verities which are endemic to the region of Italy where I live, but I thought it would be lost in OOT and I don't like the lounge. There are some wines that were cultivated in Roman times, lost, and are now being rediscovered.

Re: I want to start threads too / suggestions thread

Ask me threads done well are as a group the best posts on the site. What is done well?

OP should be around and responsive
OP should have real insight into whatever the subject matter
OP should be candid

I think people that can do those things should be encouraged to start ask me about threads. If there's a topic you are knowlegdable about there's likely someone who has a question about it.

El D,

I am happy this forum has come into existence. A whiskey thread and a books thread are the two most obvious necessities here, as those are two subjects on which I have always valued your opinion and heeded your advice.

Also, of course, I would like to be added to the thread-starter list.

Peace,
Ray

El D,

Most excellent. I can only wish I hadn't already posted my concisely named "irrational things you'd never really do" thread. Still, I have some other thoughts for posts on the horizon, and would love to share them in the future.

Also, I am going to four different restaurants in the next two weeks for Toronto's Winterlicious festival, including Canoe (drool..top 3 restaurants in Toronto). I was going to do a combined trip report with pics in OOT but it would probably fit better here.

El D,

I'd like to create a post on noise music (Japanese and other), and perhaps one on analogue and digital synthesis in your forum. These are the only things I probably know a great deal more than the average 2+2er about. I think I can make them interesting. Maybe you can enable me at some point just to make one and if you like it keep me on staff. Take care.

43/11 for El Diablo's Forum of Awesomeness and Suave
