Phil Ivey Gossip
Heard the following the other day from a friend of Ram Vaswani, who plays golf regularly with Phil Ivey in Vegas:
Marc Goodwin, a very self-regarding semi-successful tournament player (and ex double-glazing salesman) plays off scratch (zero handicap) and has been very boastful of his friendship with Ivey and how he has made lumps of money playing golf with him over the last year or so. He, Ram Vaswani and Eric Sagstrom (Eric123) arranged to play a round with Ivey in Australia. Vaswani plays off around 5 I believe and Sagstrom is a decent player. Whilst arranging the strokes Ivey was to be given and the bets to be wagered Ivey was asked how much he had been playing in the few months since they had last been able to play together. He claimed he hadn't been able to play much at all due to all the poker he was playing and was accordingly given a generous advantage and off they went. After 7 holes Goodwin was down $450,000 and suddenly erupted in fury at Ivey, claiming he had cheated them and stormed off the course. Sagstrom was similiary infuriated but carried on for another 2 holes before getting to the same amount down and he too left the course with a lot of animosity. Vaswani(one of the more fearless gamblers in the world and an honourable chap) finished off the 18 holes and ended up owing $900,000. Apparently he hasn't got that kind of money and so negotiated some sort of settlement with Ivey with the intention of paying. The other two have no intention of playing and there is now bad blood between them. Phil had omitted to tell them that he had spent the last few months practising around 3 hours a day and getting the best coaching. Is this one of the great hustles? Goodness knows what the total could have been if all three had continued to play all 18 holes (all tilted up) Should they pay up? |
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
This is a lie. A few months of practice even with top coaches is just not enough time to get you to that level, maybe in poker but not in golf.
|
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
LOL @ them taking someones word for it when they are playing for that kind of money!
Also, how do you know Phil had been practicing so much? |

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
I'm skeptical that ivey would be foolish/greedy enough to dominate that much at the begining if he was going to try to pull this off.
It seems like the clear play would be to try to stay around even and then kill em on the last few holes. |
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
Simple fact is that Ivey had the best round of his life.

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
i have flirted with a career as a professional golfer. practicing 3 hours a day is not anything close to playing for that amount of time per day. however, this is a standard hustle, i guess ivey thought who gives a [censored], i wont beat them by that much because i suck, turns out hes a lier, BTW PHIL IVEY, ILL GOLF YOU FOR ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU CAN IMAGINE, SPECIFICALLY, ALL THE MONEY I OWN, THIS IS AN OPEN CHALLENGE, I WOULD BEAT U IN ANY GAME OF GOLF PERIOD. PWNED.

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
BTW, IF ANYONE DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT GOLF, ALL THAT UR HANDICAP SAYS IN TERMS OF BETTING IS THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO CHEAT, PHIL ILL PLAY U FOR WHATEVER U OWN AND WHATEVER I OWN, U NAME THE HANDICAP JUST MAKE IT FAIR AND ILL PLAY U BOUL. I KNOW U FROM AC AN KNOW PPL LIKE THE NOVAKS, I KNOW NANCY ALSO AND KNOW U GREW UP WITH HER, ILL BANKROLL CHALLENGE U IF U READ THIS, I PLAY GOLF WITH EBBY WHO I KNOW U KNOW, LETS DO THIS HOLLA

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
OP never once said that Ivey played good, He could have told them all he was as bad as original, They gave him a 25 handicap and he was a 15, I could see that being very possible. Obviously this would all lie on how much they play per hole, if it was 50K I could easily see 450K as sustainable, but if it was 20K a hole I would be skeptical of 450K let alone 900K over 18
|
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
Yeah, they very well could have been giving him a stroke per hole if he was around 90 last time they played (possibly figuring that if he hasn't been playing much, not only has he not improved, he's probably rusty especially on the feel based shortgame). Say he's shooting low 80s now (very possible after 3 months of daily practice with a coach), he'd win every hole and they'd have every right to be upset with that kind of money on the line. If this is true that is a mistake that these players and others who hear about it won't make again, with Ivey or with anyone else, they'll learn to be more careful. Put in some sort of sandbagging rule or use verified handicaps based on recorded rounds with other players.
Sounds more like something Johnny Chan would pull than Ivey. |
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
Oh I forgot to mention that same source mentioned Daniel N as having lost $6 m on golf bets in last few months, a large part of which to an elderly chap with a crutch

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
Interesting. I read an interview with Erik Sagstöm recently in a swedish poker magasine. He claims that Ivey is "the biggest hustler of them all in the golf course". Apparently, Ivey had two friends that you had to play against each time you played with Ivey. These "friends" was two of the best golfers in the world who earn so much money with Ivey, they dont have two go on the ordinary golf tour.

Interesting to see DNs thoughts on this, Im not for the whole calling out thing that seems to be going on but Im sure he plays with Ivey a lot- sure he could give a potential true or false to this

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
Ok, I cross posted this on a well known UK poker forum to see if anyone had any info and looks like we have some credible info on the whole thing.
"ok few miss truths there. sangstrom flew to san diego to play ivey and arranged handicap before he flew out. Ivey shot 39 on the front 9 (3 months ago you could've had 100-1 on him breaking 50) and Sangrstrom paid up and walked off the course. In australia the handicap issue was brought up as they hadn't played him for a few months and the bar was set by someone they had both played recently- erik lingren. Phil was asked directly how many shots eric gave him and he replied 10 so they used that as the benchmark. Ivey then spanked both Ram and Marc and when they got back to the hotel Eric said Ivey gets no shots off him now as he has had the best coaching money can buy for the past few months and has improved his game by maybe 22 shots a round. Lying about your handicap in golf is cheating not hussling and both Marc and Ram are not giving him a penny- if ivey had been truthful he would have still taken them for a couple of hundred grand but he got greedy and has sullied his name. Several huge names in oz were discusted by his behaviour and he flew home early. Some of the biggest names in poker have said they wouldn't give him a cent and Ivey has certainly come off not looking very good in this affair. Maybe marc will come on to confirm all this." This really doesn't look very good for Phil. |

Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
For that kind of money you are playing off of an established official HC card. Not that those can't be [censored] with but it's a big step towards legitimacy. If their card reads 83, 88, 85, 92, 82, and they come out and throw up a 74 I am gonna call BS. But at least you have a reference. I do not know the structure of their bet (stroke/match/wolf etc.) but I guarantee you for that kind of bank we are playing it by PGA rules. No improving your lie, mulligan, grounding your club, stroke+distance etc. A developing player will still struggle w/these and bunker shots, up/downhill lies, hardpan, etc. are huge assets to the scratch golfer in these situations of having to give up a lot of strokes. I would love to know the structure of the bets.
You can also adjust after so many holes in cases where an unknown or unestablished HC is at play, but this is stated before tee off. |
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
since we don't know how many strokes he was getting, this doesn't really matter, but for the sake of info Barry Greenstein told me in Tunica that Ivey was a 12 or 13.

[ QUOTE ] Lying about your handicap in golf is cheating not hussling [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] First of all, learn to spell. Secondly it is hustling, not cheating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hustling "Hustling is the deceptive act of disguising one's skill in a sport or game with the intent of luring someone of probably lesser skill into gambling with the hustler, as a form of confidence trick." Exactly what was described above. So you are both wrong. |
Re: Phil Ivey Gossip
I dont believe any of this to be fair.
Why on earth would Ivey risk damaging his reputatation, i.e. his word, to make a million or two? You have to except everyone would try and get an edge for themselves but no way would it ever be pushed to this extreme. No-one would golf for money with Ivey again if this were true...oh except for the guy in here who claims to be a pro lol! |

Hustling is not about being "fair", it is about getting an edge. |
