If $$ is no object Pebble Beach is the best. Pelican Hill (or Bay, can't remember) in Newport Beach is also very nice.

The public course I want to play there is Rustic Canyon in Moorpark. It is a newer one and is meant to be an intelligent, natural design. If I get to LA I will make a point to play it. The golf architecture writer (and architect) Geoff Shackelford teamed with Gil Hanse on the design. Shackelford knows a hell of a lot about architecture and has studied the LA courses, Riviera in particular, extensively. If nobody invites me to LACC or Riviera, the course I want to play the most in LA is Rustic Canyon.

I don't think Monterey qualifies as southern california.

TDouble, have you actually played those courses? If not, what makes you confident they are the best that's available? If so, how could you not realize they're nowhere near southern California?

"what are the best public courses in the LA/orange county area?"

You might as well recommend Bandon Dunes while you're at it.

stinkeypete, a second vote for Pelican Hill, although a google search curiously turned up no acceptable homepage. Played it a lot on Links LS, have friends who have played it IRL, they say it is an awesome (albeit pretty expensive) course. FYI, there are brief shots of this course during the O.C. intro...not that this fact should sway you one way or the other...

EDIT: LOL, didn't realize a couple of others had pointed out the geography fubar.

A friend of mine has played Monarch Beach in Dana Point, and said it was just gorgeous. My wife and I hope to play it on our next trip to SoCal, although the price tag is a little steep (I just looked online, and you can get a tee time tomorrow for $170. Yuck.)

My wife used to work in LA, and has said in the past that there aren't a lot of really nice public courses close by. You can go to the Southern California Golf Association website at scga.org and use their course directory to look up specific facilities.

I play LA public courses a few times a month, nothing over $70/round w/ cart and no more than a 45 min drive from metro LA. I suck at golf, though.

Nice public courses(not awesome, but decent munis) in LA are:
Rancho Park - Century City
Wilson Harding - Los Feliz
El Dorado - Long Beach
Diamond Bar Golf Course - Diamond Bar
Santa Anita - Arcadia

There are a bunch out in the valley that are good too, but most of my foursome are out east, so we never play those.

Never played, but making the trek this summer. Doubt if I'll play all three but it's really tempting.

And if you can find a better combo in Cali than these three, good luck to you.

If you're like a 15 handicap what diff does it make play somewhere that's like $50 then

Id recomend my places, but dont want to get fired, you may want to try Rio Hondo, its in Downey and near the Bike, pretty cool facility and not very expensive, if you want more in depth info, try scga.org, southern cali GA website you can check the directory of near where you are going to be. You can also PM me if you have any questions, I have been in the business for over 15 years and worked in OC the entire time(north).

Was thinking that on my way home, too bad the Babe is closed now for renovation, thats a great track to play in the summer 18in the morning, lunch in the grill and 18 on the other course in the afternoon.

For those of you mentioning Pelican, its closed for renovation currently, they are making it into a full resort(hotel, etc.) And, as I am useless, I have no idea when it is scheduled to reopen.

Re: golf in southern california

I grew up playing golf in Orange County (though I dont currently live there). I personally thought the North course was the better golf course of the two at Pelican. The two holes on the water on the South course were OK, but they were back to back short par 3's and nothing spectacular. The rest of the south course is OK, but definitely not worth the money.

As for Monarch, its the same deal. There are two holes near the water, but both are a little cheesy and have the beach pathway right next to them, so it gets a little annoying. The rest of the course is tight and through houses/condos, not very enjoyable.

My favorite public courses in Orange County are Strawberry Farms (awesome back nine around the reservoir) and Talega (a bit of a hike from LA though in San Clemente). Tustin Ranch, Oak Creek and Tijeras Creek are all good courses too. All these are in the $125 range on the weekends, which is about all you can play without playing a dogtrack and a 6 hour round.

I havent played too much in LA, but a good value up there is Los Verdes in PV. Its crowded and they let 5somes out, but its a good track and reasonably priced. If you can, try to get one of the earlier tee times and it shouldnt be too terrible. If it is backed up, you'll have plenty of time for gambling tee box games.

Since you are a balla, you might consider playing Trump National LA. I havent played it since the Donald renovated it, but the prior course there was OK, if not a little tight. Now that the new holes are finished, it should be pretty spectacular if you can get past the cheesy waterfalls.

Re: golf in southern california

Might want to get some feedback from someone who has played Trump, I heard that the LPGA thing they had there, the ladies were not real happy with the course conditions and for $300 on the weekends and $175 during the week, Id be damn sure I want to go there. I have never played it, but I do understand it has great views, if you can hit it, play PVCC on top of the hill, its private, but your views are north and you can see the entire bay all the way to Malibu on clear days. Actually, an earlier poster mentioned El Dorado in LB, the other courses there have all been redone Rec Park and Skylinks(right under the LB airport) and have heard play much better than in years past.

Also, warning to anyone coming into Southern Cali to play golf, we have had a very cold streak the last 2 weeks, most if not all courses that dont overseed(basically most under $150 on weekends and even a few of them) are brown and look brown, all the bermuda is dormant and the AM frost has it beat down to almost dirt, very thin, playable but hard and dry. Just a little heads up.

Any of the PGA courses out in the desert are good. Couple public ones in OC are ok. Tijeras Creek has got a tough back nine (tough for me) Strawberry Farms is ok. For gambling I like to see people sweat when they short side themselves on a really fast green so I'd say go to a PGA course

Re: golf in southern california

Tob - I dont think that $300 is very good value for the course, but since these guys are ballas, it is an experience to check out.

I forgot to mention also for good value, both courses at Mile Square in Fountain Valley are solid. I have my alltime low score on the Players Course there. Though to be fair there are no trees since the course is new (except for the few holes poached from the classic course) and you can just whale away off the tee.

MiSq, is $, my wifes parents live throwing distance from the front gate and her dad plays there every weekend morning early. Actually for fun, the David Baker exec on the other side of the park is fun, pretty much my home turf in High School.

yo stinkypete,
you staying at commerce for LAPC? Im coming out feb 8th, with a one way ticket.

Im bring my clubs. Montabello (sp) is the closest course Ive played, nothing special but cheap and less than 10minutes from commerce valet. I have played strawberry farms, pretty nice about 1hr south. Also heard good things about trump national (?) also a little way south.

What do u guys shoot ? I like to gamboool..

Re: The Trump Track

I have not played it. Unlikely I ever would so I admit I have not had first hand experience at it. However, that place looks like exactly the worst kind of course. Artificial, ridiculous, impossible to play in a proper fashion, i.e. on foot quickly. The hideous waterfall with the awful cart path tunnel I have seen pictures of makes it look like an extremely expensive miniature golf course. It seems to embody everything wrong with golf, particularly American golf. I would play it only if I couldn't get on the worst dog track muni I think.

HDPM 01-23-2007 11:33 AM

Re: golf in southern california

Surprisingly, I had a pretty good time at the PGA West Stadium course. Best of the Pete Dye courses I have played, admittedly not that many. Although they require carts and houses abound and the course has so much dirt moved given the land, it is the best time I have had at a course with those problems. You can do a lot worse.

Arroyo Trabuco in Mission Viejo. Some great holes and I think it's still under $100. Stands up to any of the other O.C. cases mentioned in this thread (Tijeras, Strawberry, Oak Creek).
