I want to play the Hansen style
I would like to find some book or some information to play like Gus Hansen. I've met some players in life tournaments who use this approach and I really envy them.
Where can I find some information? |
Re: I want to play the Hansen style
You could check out his dvd.

Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Are you willing to have enormous swings in your bankroll and secondly you must have the gift of exceptional reads.
Currently there are millions of ace-rag players who have adopted this style but lack a foundation and all the necessary tools to excel. |
Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Hansen style + bad hand reading = quick Busto!

I would like to find some book or some information to play like Gus Hansen. [/ QUOTE ] The following is from his CardPlayer bio: [ QUOTE ] Hansen is considered a probability expert and understands equity calculations, a talent that comes in handy when playing high-stakes poker. His unusual expertise in this area enables him to redefine "correct" play, weighing the probabilities of the hands of his opponents, who act in certain ways according to common equations. [/ QUOTE ] Hansen is a former backgammon expert. Equity is a very important concept in backgammon, and Hansen uses it to play a lot of hands that most people would go broke with. He is also a much more mathematical and analytical player than his TV image suggests. You aren't going to play "the Hansen style" by reading a book or browsing some forum. You need a solid foundation in math and probability, and you need to really know the game of poker (including the ability to play the players). Players who try to imitate his style without the hard work, study, and experience may win in the short term, but they will eventually go broke. |

Doyle's classic text on NLHE also lays out some of the principles behind agressive play: http://www.doylespokerroom.com/poker...ldem_poker.cfm |
Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Master backgammon. Seriously. If you can beat that game against good players, poker will seem like fishing in a stocked bathtub.

[/ QUOTE ] Its pretty easy. Just raise most of your hands and call every reraise. Then you get lucky. If your opponent is still ahead on the flop, then you just draw out. |

I want to play the Hansen style! [/ QUOTE ] Shave head. Lose weight. Wear contacts. Take 30 seconds for even the most obvious fold. You are on your way. |
Re: I want to play the Hansen style
If by "Hansen-style" you mean "shortball poker", you may want to read Erick Lindgren's book. It's all about shortball poker. Hyper-aggressive but not too much chip commitment pre-flop.

Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Daniel N. briefly discusses Hanson's style in his Hold 'em Wisdom for All Players.

Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Phil Gordon's Little Green Book has a two page thing on Hansen's playing style.
Honestly, aren't you supposed to learn to play good solid winning ABC poker and then start experiementing with different styles of play to see if you can pick up a better edge here or there? You know, learn to walk before you run.. |
Re: I want to play the Hansen style
Hansen's style is similar to playing the cube in Backgammon. He is an expert in determining equities. Btw, he also played Yatzee for big money
You can't just learn that in a crash course. His play has a highly scientific foundation that needs a few years of study and he doesn't leak anything on it. Your best shot would be to hope for Paul Magriel to write something on Poker. That's probably as close to Hansen's style as you can get. |

Re: I want to play the Hansen style
He plays lots of hands, while Brunson draws his line to K2s (that may be the same to him as 75s for example) but Gus plays stuff even like Jxs, and gets good value from his better hands like the AA. Gus is good because he doesn't play his cards but your cards, finds out where you are e.g. with a flop lead bet and if the turn comes right he bets you out, as an example. He's that good that he doesn't need all that good cards on average; one doesn't need anything but to win the pot, no hand is needed for that, though he too generally wants something, like any sort of semi, but not necessarily. It's also hard to get him out as he just figures he has a good enough chance to win and calls you down, though all the way he looks how the cards come and if he can steal the pot. Just like with Brunson, not often one has hands that can take the heat, espcially when one doesn't figure to be strong. There are many other brunsonian mixture styles than just the Brunson's and Gus's, most all of them being the winning style in the hands even those who do not play very well but has such a style, either by accident or by planning.
