What would you do..

If poker in the US went away soon? My friend asked me last night and I actually had a harder time than I thought I would predicting exactly what I would do. Just curious what some of the people out there who are in a similar situation would do.

FWIW, I dont think this is going to happen, but it's at least interesting to speculate.

vegas, duh. Actually, probably get a normal job and focus fully on that without the temptation of being a full time pro gnawing at me 24/7

Re: What would you do..

Consider moving closer to a Casino-based area. I have a real-world job, but make about the same in poker as I do at my job. I hate my job. I enjoy poker. I did the poker pro thing in the past, it was profitable but I lost my "love" for the game. With the stability the job provides, poker is fun again since I'm not playing to put food on the table.

I'd like to think that all this is temporary. WIth the billions the online poker industry gets from the U.S., it's just a matter of time before the sites band together and form a strong enough lobby to make a difference.

Kind of n00bish/OT question but: how difficult would it be for a typical above average intelligence med-high stakes poker winner to make a similar living from stocks, real estate and other forms of investing? It's something I'm very interested in but haven't read too much about yet because I'm busy with other things. I'm just curious to know how good of a "backup" it could be.

It's hard to bluff a blue chip stock off the best hand. And Margin Calls can be far more damaging than marginal calls.

I'm surprised I havn't heard more people say they'd move out of the US for a while.

Edit - That is if my assumption that TC meant if online gambling in the USA went away.

That depends on the size of your investing bankroll. Stock market returns 8%-10% per annum long term.

Most European douchebags I know play with 4 hole cards and/or 2 boards. I have a hard enough time figuring out the Euro conversion in a standard 7-card game. And WTF is "pot" limit?

If it was somehow made impossible/totally impractical to play online poker from the US I would seriously consider aborting my PhD studies over here and going to study at Cambridge.

bottom line, there's only one very very easy way to be worth seven figs in the next five years.

If you want a real estate/business play you might consider automated carwashes or self-storage.

edit: maybe the self-serve carwashes are better. The one's where you put in quarters.

Taylor,

Not sure if I discussed this with you before, but 99% of my friends are in the NJ/NYC area, and I'm sure it's pretty similar w/ you int he midwest area. It's really easy to say, fuckit, lets move to some cool country like Sweden or the UK or Canada but if you think about it, leaving absolutely everyone that is important in your life behind and only seeing them a couple times a year is going to be incredibly difficult.
