Do other forums have \"Gimmick Accounts\" and can you explain them?
 

i stopped by irc today to say hi, and a few of the guys just mentioned other message boards in passing. Other than a Knicks message board I peruse, I have never read another board. Do gimmicks exist to the extent they do here? (Ones a mod) or is this a 2+2 thing?

I once tried to explain commodus to a friend of mine, and it was near impossible, so this question may suck.

The closest I think I've seen is imitation accounts mocking other posters. So someone would create an account MattSuspectt and create a post "Hi I'm dumb and I like dumb music", or some crap like that. Hilarity ensues.

I have seen gimmick accounts, but I think most people on other forums don't realize its a gimmick.

I think gimmick accounts aren't all that uncommon, though they probably don't crop up everywhere. I think a forum needs to reach a certain level of size and user commitment before that kind of thing typically has any humor potential.

Yes, most of the forums I've posted on have had gimmick accounts.

Both of the other forums I visit have gimmick accounts, though they're simply referred to as aliases.

I have several gimmick accounts on other forums, but none here. I think that 2p2 has some of the best gimmick accounts (sup bro, Idi, istewart, etc), but this phenomenon is internet-wide.

OP,

Only thing that comes close is a sports betting subforum where someone made a ridiculous square tout gimmick and posted his LOCK OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!! every week. It was pretty funny, and whoever it was was wise enough only to run it for the latter 2/3 of the NFL season and then stopped using it.

I can't say i frequent a lot of other boards except some for my classic car which is mostly 50 year old guys who can barely type.

In any case I'd expect more "hip" boards to have gimmicks though I doubt they eveolved to the point of moderation [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I'm not as new to 2p2 as my registration date would indicate, but unfortunately I don't really have any gimmick besides my username.

2p2 is for the most part pretty new as a forum, and really prior to 2004 was pretty insular. There's a ton of folks on here who really only post on here.

Almost any internet meme that pops up here has been done before, but a bunch of folks just haven't seen it yet.

my friend doesnt use the internet very much, but he is very brazilio-ish in his tendency to try to piss people off. He registered on the BET message board as "TAPDANCINGSPOOK". he seemed to enjoy it, but the board got pretty upset and the mods took forever to respond and it was pretty much a full board trainwreck.

on baseball primer/baseball think factory they had a lot of gimmicks, but originally the board didn't require registration, so anyone could post as anyone. There were many long running jokes that many people abused - ie, Mike Piazza "posting" gay jokes. After registration, there was a Larry Bowa gimmick account for a while, and an Al Keefe gimmick account (from the Ring Lardner novels). Both would be in the top 10 gimmick accounts here.

Gimmick accounts are more commonly known as "trolls" and appear in much greater number on your typical general interest message board. madville, leenks, uselessjunk, etc.

For one thing, you're neglecting the best BTF gimmick in Admiral Akbar. For another, I don't think those qualify as true gimmick accounts b/c anyone could use them.

One forum I frequent had an absolutely stunning gimmick account who called him/herself The Narrator and who would post legitimately insightful running commentary. That's the single best idea for a gimmick I've ever seen, though he/she was too infrequent of a poster to be real competition to the great gimmicks of 2+2.
