\"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week 1)

Figured there'll be enough people watching to discuss the new NBC series Poker After Dark that starts tonight (check your local listings) to create an "official" thread to discuss the action at the table, Shana Hiatt, the reduced presence of an announcer, etc.

Just to clarify, there is a voice that will comment on some of the action, but that voice won't give analysis. The voice will add some humor as well as give some straight-forward commentary on the action.

Strange, their is an announcer randomly says something once in awhile but he is never introduced. The players are yakking away like crazy, plenty aware that is there is reduced commentary.

Huck folds AJo from 2nd position six handed. Folds KQo from the button with two players in the pot ahead for standard raises. Wow.

The lack of announcers is interesting. I think a compromise would be better because not all the player chat is interesting and they talk over each other so much that a lot gets lost. I think they should edit the chat down a tiny little bit to the more interesting or atleast cohearant comments and fill in with some good commentary.

Yeah, it seems as if the poker action gets filtered out by all the mindless chatter. They definitely need to improve things to make this show watchable.

the commentary is actually funny, because its so terse and random.

lol douchebagaments

It seems as if the producers said to all the players, "Be the biggest, most obnoxious [censored] you possibly can."

I was kind of put off by a lot of the comments made. Probably won't be seeing Allen Cunningham or Dan Harrington since they say maybe one or two words per poker session.

It was OK. Way too much chatter sometimes and definitely not enough Shana.

Still a little over an hour away here on the west coast, but I'm disappointed in the "not enough Shana" comments. She's pretty much the point of the show, so you'd think she'd get a lot of air time.

Re: \"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week of 1/2)

i thought the table talk was really boring/annoying aside from huck and gus. This also reminded me why I don't watch much TV as NBC managed to fit 7000 commercial breaks into a 1 hour show

I only found one moment funny when they started talking about CBS, and phil called shieky a sucka. His tone was A+ and i LOL

i thought it was good, and i like the idea of one of these every night and a recap episode w/ commentary from the winner on saturday. also it's a good timeslot for me

Re: \"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week of 1/2)

no one thought the play was boring? i understand everyone wanted deepstack play so it wasn't an all in fest, but everyone playing so goddamn nitty wasn't exciting either.

Best comment of the night was when Steve Z asked Shana if the rumor was true that she got married. The announcer chimes in and says "You are drawing dead either way."

The announcer is Oliver Nejad, of Poker After Dark and MC for the National Heads-up Poker Championship.

conflicting thoughts/emotions...

wow, just watched PAD last night and it was definitely different. i agree that the lack of commentators was weird.

i don't mind at all having the audio focused in on player chat, but when the players in the game are either annoying or boring, then it makes the show very very very unwatchable.

steve zolotow and huck seed...wow, these two are ultra boring cats. throw in Phil Hellmuth, Sheiky, and Annie Duke - some of the most ANNOYING players alive - and you have a better table.

i think future shows will be better with more colorful, funny, intelligent, friendly, etc. chat/players. that first episode, though, was a bit of a downer in my opinion.

randomly, did Annie Duke look fat and older than normal or was it just me? ...Phil Hellmuth too...wow, i seriously never want to see his whiny butt pplay again for the rest of my life.

OOOOOPS i meant "BAD" table, not better...

Re: \"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week of 1/2)

ok scratch the Annie Duke old/fat comment too. that was inappropriate of me.

one last thing is that the room they play in seems a bit boring (esp., if they're gonna play in the same location each week)...like we don't get to see those cool WPT exotic locations and casino pieces anymore to spice things up (along with Shana Hiatt's funny interviews and poker corners, etc.)...oh well.

still beats shows like Celebrity Poker and Hip Hop Holdem

Re: \"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week of 1/2)

It's probably worth noting that each match lasted almost five hours, and so far only one hour has been shown. The reason is so that viewers can see how a particular match unfolds over the course of time, not just the end of it. And this one will get very, very interesting, and quite personal. Just a hint of what's coming occurred in the first hour of play.

Also, the top players all have different personalities, and just because some don't talk much doesn't mean they shouldn't have an opportunity to showcase their talent. Phil Ivey, for instance, rarely speaks, and no one complains. Allen Cunningham doesn't either, and everyone rags on him. Everybody has their favorites. Cunningham, by the way, will play in week 9, and Ivey in weeks 4 and 8.

Also, Shana will see much more airtime on the Saturday night show called the "Director's Cut," and different amounts of airtime throughout the week.

Stick around. You don't leave a baseball game in the first inning because your favorite player struck out in his first at bat. But there's a home run coming in this match that you won't want to miss.

Those are some good points. I do realize it's a week long show, so will look forward to more.

A good ending eh? Sounds cool then.

I believe a lot of viewers will tune in to see Shana. NBC needs to up the T&A quota.

I think they don't quite get the concept of limited commentary. Limited commentary doesn't mean that you simply take at random one statement out of 50 that would normally be said and say it. And now that I've listened to the players, I'm not sure that the concept is worth getting right anyway. In every sport fans rag on commentators, but they're the ones who keep the show watchable.

Sheik to Hellmuth : "You see how fast I called you there Philip"

I laughed. I mean, "Philip"

Btw, Steve Z asked Phil about playing in "the big game". Hellmuth said that he was there last week and won $200.000.

The best commentary that I've heard on a poker show was on monte carlo milllions.

I saw the streaming episode and I enjoyed it. I would rather listen to the table talk then to after the fact announcing.

Re: \"Official\" Poker After Dark thread (week of 1/2)

Minimal announcing from Oliver Nejad is better than having him talk through the whole show. I'd prefer he didn't talk at all. This might work with a good announcer.

If they are going to have any announcing, they do need to introduce the person talking. It's weird to all of the sudden have a comment show up out of nowhere then disappear for a while.

My thoughts after episode one...

I like the fact that they are showing virtually the entire sng...but cmon...these early hands?

More Shana is needed. If you ask me, its on way too late lol. And its holdem, nothing hold em related keeps me very interested for very long these days.

jesus you guys are hard to please. People hate on High Stakes Poker b/c you can't hear the table talk. People hate on the WPT type shows b/c they're so heavily edited. Now this show let's you listen to all the talk and see almost all of the hands and people are saying they want more announcers and more editing. wtf? I think it's really good so far.

HSP got it perfect during the second season, there was plenty of the table talk along with enough Gabe. I turned this off about half way through(mainly because I cant stand Hellmuth)Might look it up again later in the week once it becomes a better game to watch, didnt care for the early round last night.

I really enjoyed this show. Loved the fact that there is little to no commentary and lots of table talk.

Also, the fact that most hands are shown. It takes away everything I don't like about other poker shows.

Set the Tivo to record them all season.
